Sept 22, 1830 North Carolina Journal "In the midst of life, we are in death." It is but seldom that we have the painful duty of recording so afflictive a bereavement by death as the following: On Sunday, the 5th inst., HUGH McKENZIE, ESQ. of Anson County, in company with SOLICITOR TORY and ALEX LITTLE, ESQ., left Wadesboro on their way to Moore Superior Court, and about four miles from Wadesboro' MR. McKENZIE'S horse took fright on the declivity of a hill and running a short distance threw him from his Sulkey; from the injury received, he departed this life the following morning, in the 39th year of his age; his remains were followed to the grave on Tuesday by his Masonic brethen, and a large number of his fellow citizens. For many years before his death, he acted as a justice of the peace, where his decisions were marked with that promptitude by which he could arrive at just and correct conclusions. In short, in whatever situation placed, to act his part, he seemed highly gifted by nature for clearness, precision and good sense. MR. McKENZIE died in the vigor of manhood -- in full health the day on which he met with the fatal accident-- leaving behind him a most amiable wife and one child --his aged father and mother -- a brother and sisters to mourn his early termination of his earthly career, together with the citizens of Anson, to lament the loss of one of their most useful men.
