John Graybeal, Ashe, Co., NC John Graybeal, born 19 Apr. 1826, was the son of David and Barbara Burkett Graybeal. John married (1) Rebecca Jane Perkins about 1849/50. John left Ashe County about 1868 and moved to Miami County, Kansas. About 1874/5 he moved his family to the Pueblo Territory in Colorado. It was also about this time or before that his first wife Rebecca died. He subsequently married (2) Eva Young from Virginia. John died 5 May 1907 in Pueblo, Colorado and was buried in the town of Rye. When John wrote the letter below, he was serving with the Confederate Army in Virginia. I send you the papers of needles and one paper of pins by David Dickson I would send you that black domestic but I have not got the opportunity of bringing it you can get it when you come down. If you come I want you to come with Harrison when he comes. If you come you had better come before the weather gets too cold. I want you to bring or send me a bed quilt and pare [sic] of pants and I want a pare [sic] of boots made if you can get the leather and if you can't, have my old boots mended and bring them. You wanted to know whether you could [get] in the camp or not to se [sic] me. I can say to you that you can come to the camps and I will arrange a place for you to stay. Harrison talks of fetching us some things and if he comes I want you to have a keg made and send me & James Ashley some molasses James says for his wife to put in half so you can let her know about it and I would like to have some buckwheat flour. I will just say to you that I have come to the conclusion to try to get out of debt by selling of Elias. Jack Reeves wants to buy him and he will be there to look at him before long and if he will give one thousand dollars for him I think you had better sell him and get out of debt and if Reeves dont [sic] buy him I think you can make a trade with David Dickson. I think it is the best thing you can do under the present circumstances if you make trade of that kind I want the Dickson debt paid off I will close by saying that I am well at present & hopeing [sic] these lines will find you all well and doing likewise. Book V(new) Page 122 John Graybeal Bill of Sale to Johnson Perkins [Sale of male slave Elias] State of North Carolina Ashe County Know all men by these presents that I John Graybeal and Jane Graybeal of the county and state aforesaid in consideration of the sum of one thousand dollars to me in hand paid by Johnson Perkins of the county and state aforesaid the receipt whereof is hereby fully acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain sell and convey unto the said Johnson Perkins a certain Negro boy slave named Elias about 11 years old to have and to hold to him the said Johnson Perkins his heirs and assigns executors and administrators forever free and discharged of any and all incumberances [sic] whatsoever and for the better security of the title hereby made. I do bind myself my heirs executors and administrators to warrant and forever defend the title to the above named slave free and clear from the lawfull [sic] claims of any all person whatsoever.
