Oct. 24, 1843                   Charlotte Journal
   DROWNING -- GEORGE PHILIPS, Sheriff of Ashe County, was drowned in the 
Yadkin River a few days ago on his return home from Raleigh, wither he had 
gone to settle his public accounts. His saddle bags were lost in the river. 
This brief account we have, without further particulars, on the authority of a 
letter received day-before-yesterday by a gentleman of this place written from 
Ashe County. -- Southern Citizen
