AVERY COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Richard Buchanan, 20 Jun 2004

NEWLAND - Richard Buchanan, 89, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at his 
home. He was the son of the late Eden and Martha McKinney Buchanan, 
and husband of the late Aretis Buchanan. A retired carpenter, he 
was a member of McCourry's Rock Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Yvonne McKinney and Sandy Lance, 
both of Newland; one son, Charles Buchanan of Plumtree; two brothers, 
Ralph Buchanan of Spruce Pine and Sanford Buchanan of Michigan; four 
sisters, Lucy Smith of Spruce Pine, Carrie Higgins of Michigan, Mary 
Buchanan of Newland, and Doris Matthews of Asheville; seven 
grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Monday in the Grindstaff Memorial 
Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Rev. Harold Dellinger 
officiated. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the church 
cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service 
hour at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of 
Avery County, 351 W. Mitchell Street, Newland, NC 28657.
