ERNEST R. DAVENPORT 

WLAND - Ernest R. (Jiggs) Davenport, 91, of Old Hanging Rock Road, died 
Wednesday, March 8, 206 in a Spruce Pine healthcare facility. He was preceded 
in death by his first wife, the late Virginia Goins Davenport; his second wife, 
the late Beulah Phillips Davenport; and a great grandson, Clifton E. Davenport. 
He was a member and Sunday School teacher at Pine Grove Methodist Church, where 
he had perfect attendance for 39 years. He helped establish Green Valley Fire 
Department, where he also served as Fire Chief for 20 years. He was a member of 
the Lions Club, Avery County Soil and Water Commission and Avery County Tree 
Growers Association. He was also a Boy Scout leader.

Survivors include two sons, Philip Davenport of Asheville, and Rev. J. Paul 
Davenport of Waynesville; a daughter, Jan Muse of Greenville, SC; stepson, 
Donald Phillips of Bakersville; stepdaughters, Judy Riddle of Spruce Pine, and 
Pat Bullet of Burnsville; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and three 
step grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Methodist Church. 
Rev. Kim Higgins officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial 
donations may be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, Pine Grove Methodist 
Church, Green Valley Fire Department, and the Avery County Humane Society.
