ALBERT PICKETT DICKSON III NEWLAND – Dr. A.P. Dickson, 81, died Monday, February 11, 2002 at the Johnson City Medical Center. The son of the late Rev. A.P. Dickson II and Maude Bragg Dickson, he was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He received his M.D. from the Medical College in Virginia. In 1961, he opened a practice in Newland and in 1990 began work for the Rural Health Consortium in Roan Mtn., TN, retiring in 1998. He was a member of Plumtree Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder, becoming Elder Emeritus. He was the director of the Avery County Health Department for several years. Later, he instituted the medical examiner system and was the county medical examiner for a number of years. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of Northwestern and First Union Banks. He was on the Newland Board of Aldermen, designed the town seal, and in 1990 was chosen Avery County “Man of the Year.” Survivors include his wife, Clara Burleson Dickson; daughters, Julia Jennings of Banner Elk; Susan Wyatt Dickson of Durham, and Ann Caroline Dickson of Richmond, VA; sister, Maude Baker of Louisville, KY; and four grandchildren. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Plumtree Presbyterian Church. Revs. Wallace Wise and Dr. George Callahan officiated. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine was in charge of arrangements.
