FISHER, USMC RET. MARION - 1st Sgt. Charles A. Fisher, USMC Ret., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008. A native of Avery County and graduate of Harris High School, he was the son of the late Lee W. Fisher and Lottie Mae Fisher. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Buddy Fisher; and a sister, Glenda Thomas. He joined the U.S. Marines at the age of 17 and served his country for 24 years. He was a decorated combat Vietnam veteran, who received two Purple Hearts and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Upon retirement from the military, he served as Military Instructor for the award-winning Asheville High School Jr. ROTC unit for an additional 19 years. He was a member of Estatoe Church of God. Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Fisher of the home; a son, Lee Fisher of Marion; and daughter, Dawn Rookey of Black Mountain; three sisters, Peggy Thomas of Marion, Shirley Atkins of Fort Mill, S.C., and Gail Butner of Spruce Pine; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Estatoe Church of God. The Revs. Kenneth Nelson and Wayne Braswell officiated. Burial followed at Hoilman and Hughes Family Cemetery in Avery County.
