RHEUBEN CHESTER GREENE 
 
NEWLAND - Rheuben Chester Greene, 83, of the Roaring Creek community, died 
Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007 in Spruce Pine Community Hospital. He was the son of the 
late Chet and Mary Hughes Greene. He was also preceded in death by a son, 
Ronnie Gene Greene; three sisters, Lucy Pittman, Lillie Greene and Dora 
McCoury; and six brothers, Jim, George, Ed, Joe, Tom and John Greene. He had 
worked for Lee Medford Sawmill, and later worked for Drexel, Skyline and 
Henredon furniture companies, and for Tar Heel Mica Company.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Belle Gardner Greene of the home; a 
daughter, Charlotte Hughes of Newland; a son, Chester Greene of Spruce Pine; 
four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-
grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at The People's Church in Roaring 
Creek. Revs. Ronald Owensby and Robert Beers officiated. Burial followed in 
Upper Hughes Cemetery. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until the 
service hour Friday at the church.
