AVERY COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Clarence Gwyn, 7 May 2003 ----¤¤¤¤---- Clarence Gwyn Clarence Gwyn, 85, 810 Maple Street, Elizabethton, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003 in the Life Care Center of Elizabethton. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was a son of the late Harrison and Cannie Fulk Gwyn. He had lived in Elizabethton since 1961. Mr. Gwyn was a retired employee of the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center, having retired from the Dietary Department. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the Oak Street Baptist Church where he had served as a trustee for several years. Mr. Gwyn was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta Hicks Gwyn, July 14, 2002, and by two sisters, Stella Potter and Ruth Rankin. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Danny Williams, Elizabethton; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Raymond and Karen Gwynn, of Drexell, N.C.; Melvin and Norma Gwyn, of Hampton, and Ricky Gwyn, of the home; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Julius and Ethel Gwyn, of Banner Elk, N.C., and Mrs. Mina Hagie, of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, LaDonna Williams and her husband, Jerry; Revekah Ray and her husband, Jason; Amanda Giles and her husband, Jesse; Jordan and Zachary Gwyn; three great grandchildren, Kaylin Williams, Kennedy Williams, and Casey Williams. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. GWYN -- Funeral services for Clarence Gwyn, 85, 810 Maple Street, Elizabethton, who died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2003 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun and Mr. Jesse Giles officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2003 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be nephews and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family, neighbors and the staff at Life Care Center. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
