He was the son of the late Mack and Dolly Ashley Holtsclaw. He owned and operated Newland Shell Station for many years and retired from the Maintenance Department of the Avery County School System. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Arnold Holtsclaw of the home; sons, David Holtsclaw of Arden, and Rick Holtsclaw of Spruce Pine; a brother, Horton Holtsclaw of Minneapolis; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. The Revs. Robert Beers and Tony Clark officiated. Burial followed in Minneapolis Cemetery. The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church or Avery County Revival Center.
