Hughes Of Newland Dies Rites Held Monday Mrs. S.P. Hughes of Newland, died Sunday afternoon at 2:30, at the Grace Hospital, following a week of serious illness. Final rites were held Monday afternoon at eh Baptist church in Newland with interment following in the family cemetery at Hughes. Mrs. Hughes had undergone a serious operation several years ago and was suddenly stricken again with the same ailment about a week or ten days before her death. She was taken from her home in Newland to the hospital in Banner elk, but failed to rally from another operation. Funeral services were conducted at the Newland Baptist church by Rev. F.C. Watts, pastor of the church and Rev. J.M. Lewis. Rev. Lewis officiated at the rites held at the graveside. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends who mourned the passing of this pioneer of Avery county who has taken an important part in its development. In addition to her husband S.P. Hughes, her father James Stewart several grandchildren two brothers and a sister and host of distant relatives she was survived by the following eight living children. Wilburn, Walter, John, Mrs. Nettie carpenter, Mrs. Blanche Hughes, Mrs. Minnie Lusk, Mrs. Ethel Ray and Miss Pearl Hughes.
