AVERY COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Verna Hughes, 30 Jun 2004

NEWLAND - Verna Hughes, 89, of Mollie's Branch Road, died Wednesday, 
June 30, 2004 in a Spruce Pine rest home. She was the daughter of the 
late Jim and Dula English, and wife of the late Sid Hughes. She wa a 
member of People's Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Helen Banner of Newland, Janice Bailey 
of Marion, and Sandra Hughes of Newland; sons, Otha, Leonard, Johnny 
and Earl Hughes, all of Newland; a sister, Ruby Burleson of Bakersville; 
a brother, Troy English of Jonesboro, TN; 25 grandchildren; and one 
great grandchild. 
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Grindstaff Memorial 
Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Revs. Brandon Young and 
Larry Shook officiated. Burial was at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hughes Cemetery 
on Jerry's Creek. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service 
hour Friday at the funeral home.
