AVERY COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Harriet Hughes, 25 Dec 2004 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- NEWLAND, N.C. -- Harriet Hughes, 95, of Roaring Creek Road, Newland, died Saturday, December 25, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Hughes was a native of Avery County and the daughter of the late Marion and Minnie Buchanan Hopson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Carmon Hughes, two daughters, Marie Clark and Sue Zoleane Hughes, and a son, J.C. Hughes. Mrs. Hughes was a housewife and a member of Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, J.G. Hughes, Roan Mountain, Tenn.; four daughters, Mable Stoughton, Canton, Ohio, Maxine Guess, Elizabethton, Tenn., Irene Lusk, Lexington, N.C., and Ailean Powell, Crossnore, N.C.; and a half brother, Toy Hopson, Newland. Twenty-nine grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, from the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank James and the Rev. Junior Carver officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 29, at the Lower Hughes Cemetery on Jerry's Creek Road, Roaring Creek.
