Potter Ila S. Potter, 89, of Roan Mountain, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006, at her grandson's residence following a brief illness. A native of Avery County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Charles A. and Rosea Turbyfield Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jonah L. Potter, a son, Timmy Wayne Potter, and five sisters, her twin Edna Young, Carrie Bailiff, Madge Peake, Clara Sue Smith and Flora Shoemaker. Mrs. Potter was a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and retired from teaching with the Carter County School System. She received her B.S. degree from East Tennessee State University. Survivors include a son, Billy Joe Potter, Roan Mountain; two foster sons, Albert Eugene Potter, Elizabethton, and Gary Potter, of Oklahoma; a daughter, Beulah Juanita Roberts, Roan Mountain; eight grandchildren, Billy Jack Potter and Roma Hicks, Jonah Potter, Melissa Potter, Melinda Potter, Mike Potter, Johnnie Potter, Walter "Wolly" Potter and Tammy Lane Roberts; and great- grandchildren, Billi Potter, Aurianna Potter and Job Potter. Several nieces and nephews also survive including Dana D. Young, JoNell Young, Karen Buchanan, Sandra Guinn and Clark Young. The funeral service for Mrs. Potter will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, August 3, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Gerald and Gloria Holly and The Young Family. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the home of her grandson, 112 Elisah Garland Road, Roan Mountain, at anytime. The graveside service and interment will be at noon, Friday, August 4, in the Cordell Cemetery. Those attending will meet at the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Morgan, members of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and friends and neighbors of the community.
