Proffit Dies Following Auto Accident Fatally injured when the car he was driving ran off the road, Dr. Thomas J. Proffit beloved physician of Elk Park died at the Banner Elk Hospital Tuesday at 8 P.M. The accident occurred on the State Line hill near Elk Park about noon Tuesday. Dr. Proffit was rushed to Banner Elk immediately where all attention possible was given him. Death came from loss of blood he sustained before reaching the hospital. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 P.M. from the home and burial will be on the hillside back of the house alongside the remains of his wife who died two years ago. Dr. Proffit is survived by his mother, Mrs. J.F. Proffit of Mast, N.C., two sisters, Mrs. Ben Henson of Vilas, N.C., and Mrs. Allen Holtsclaw of Spokane Wash., and two brothers, Charles and James of Vilas. Dr. profit who was fifty eight years old has practiced medicine in Avery County for more than twenty six years. His devotion to duty and his unselfish work in relieving the suffering will long remain in the memories of those who knew him. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and of the Medical College at Louisville, Ky. His post graduate work was doned at the Medical college at Philadelphia. He was married twenty six years ago to Miss Myrtle Church, a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.H. Church of Watauga County. She was a sister of Mrs. Jeter Oaks and Mr. George Church of Elk Park. Dr. Proffit had been a member of the Presbyterian church for many years.
