Proffitt Elk Park citizens and those of almost the entire county were saddened last Friday when they learned of the death of Mrs. Myrtle Church Proffitt, loved wife of our esteemed citizen, Dr. T.J. Proffit, following a long illness caused by a fall during the icy weather some weeks ago. She had been at Grace Hospital and had nearly recovered from her accident and returned to her home, when a relapse came and pneumonia setting n complicated the condition, resulting in her death. The deceased was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Church, of Zionville, N.C., and was born there, marrying Dr. Proffit about 23 years ago. They lived at Sugar Grove about eight years and then came here where they have resided for about fifteen years and where she has become beloved by all who know her and where she has been a helpful citizen in our community life. She was a member of the congregation of the older Dr. Tufts, at Banner Elk, and her membership remained in the Presbyterian church there after his death and until her own. She was fifty years old at the time of her death and her years had been well spent and of profit to all around her. Besides the bereaved husband, one brother and three sisters survive her, as follows: Mr. George Church and Mrs. W.G. Oaks, of Elk Park, Mrs. Maria Thomas, of Trade, Tenn., and Mrs. Mollie Wood, of Shouns, Tenn. These will have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. J.M. Heaton, assisted by Rev. Stout, and interment was had in the hillside above the home where she deceased and her husband had lived together happily for about fifteen years. A profusion of beautiful flowers sent by loving friends surrounded the casket and were placed upon the grave. The pal bearers were James Dearmin, Tom Miller, ---- Maening, Louis Cornett, Jack Cable and John Greer. The flower bearers were Mesdames E.S. Tucker, P.A. Vanoy, J.M. Dearmin, J.C. Buchanan, B.M. Jennings, Rose Wilson, Will Holsclaw, H.K. Marlowe, and Ben Aldridge. “Somewhere the sun in shining, Somewhere the song birds dwell; Hush, then, thy sad repining, God lives and all is well.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/avery/obits/p/proffitt2104ob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ncfiles/ File size: 2.8 Kb
