            Union Chapel Church Minutes, Beaufort Co., NC; 1858

     The inhabitants of the community of Chocowinity who were
     originally associated with the Freewill Baptist faith united, in
     1858, with the Union Baptist Church of Virginia, as shown in this
     document. The minutes of the meeting were taken by William Wallace
     Gallaway/Galloway and have survived in our family papers. Many of
     these same neighbors later changed their affiliation, this time
     founding some of the earlier Disciples of Christ (Christian)
     Churches in southern Beaufort and northern Craven counties.--ER

          "On Friday before the fourth Sunday in February 1858
          Elder James W. Hunnicutt‹the Treatise on the faith of
          the Union Baptist Church of Va. helt a meeting at Union
          Chapel Beaufort County, and lectured on the faith and
          practice of that Church. The object of this meeting was
          to unite if possible the Freewill Baptist at that place
          with the Union Baptist of Virginia. On Saturday he
          preached to the attending Congregation. After divine
          service, Owen W. Jones being caled to the chair, the
          action was then taken when the following named members
          formed the unction.

          John Carrow, John Holmes, Levis A. Taylor, Oliver M.
          Ellis, John M. Carrow, William Elis, Wm. W. Gallaway,
          Mrs. Sopha Carrow, Elizabeth Gallaway, Mary Elis,
          Charity Taylor, _____(illegible) Godley, Nancy Hull,
          Althy Tyer, Rachal Stuart, Sapha _____(illegible).

          The church was then organize by Chosing W. W. Gallaway
          Clk, B. F. Harding Treasurer, John Carrow, John Holmes
          deacons, Samuel T. Carrow was afterwards ____(illegible
          word) to the deaconship to leade in Social meetings.
          Elder S. J. Carrow was chosen to take the pastoral car
          [care] of this church.

          It was then moved and seconed that the prosedings of
          this meeting be published in the Christian Banner.

          At a meeting of the members of the Union Baptist at
          Union Chapel, July 3rd, 1858, the following resolution
          was offerd and adopted

          On Motion aggread that Brethering S. J. Carrow, B. F.
          Harding, Charles Peterson, Spicer Roy, and W. W.
          Gallaway together with Our Pastor S. J. Carrow represent
          us in the Grand Council of Virginia to be held at Union
          Grove, Essex County, comencing Friday before the Second
          Sunday in August 1858."
