Know all men by these presents that I William Grist for and in Consideration 
of the sum of Two hundred and fifty dollars current money of the State of 
North Carolina to me in hand paid at and before the ensealing and delivery of 
these presents by Allen Grist the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge 
myself to be therewith fully satisfied contented and paid have granted 
bargained sold released and by these presents do fully clearly and absolutely 
grant bargain sell and release unto the Said Allen Grist a Negro boy Phillip 
to have and to hold the said Negro boy Phillip about Nine Years old unto the 
said Allen Grist his heirs executors administrators and assigns forever. and I 
the said Wm Grist for myself my heirs executors administrators and assigns do 
covenant and agree to and with the above named Allen Grist his heirs executors 
administrations and assigns to warrant and defend the property of the said 
Negro boy Phillip slave nine years old from all persons whatsoever. In Witness 
Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this Fifteenth day of September 
one Thousand eight hundred and fifteen.
