Deed of Edgecombe County, recorded in Deeds of Halifax County, North Carolina Book 5, p. 242 (LDS Microfilm #0317032) This Indenture made the first day of March in the year of our Lord 1743/44. Between Edward Howcott of Benfort County in North Carolina Tavern Keeper of the one part and Samuel Smith of the Isle of White County in Virginia of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Edward Howcott for and in consideration of the sum of Three hundred and twenty pounds lawfull money of this province to me in hand paid by the said Samuel Smith before the ensealing hereof have given granted bargined sold aleined conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do fully clearly and absolutely give grant bargain convey and confirm unto him the said Samuel Smith his heirs and assigns forever one massage or tract of land lying on the south side of Marohock River beginning at a red oak on the west side of Rocky Run Henry Simmons corner tree thence East across the Run on Simmons line. Three hundred and twenty poles to a barren white oak thence North 320 poles to a white oak thence West 320 poles to a red oak thence South 320 poles to the first Station the said land lying in Edgecombe County in the province of North Carolina and containing six hundred and forty acres be the same more or less. To have and to hold the said granted and bargained forever with all the appurtinances and priviledges to the same belonging or in in any wise appertaining to him the said Samuel Smith his heirs and assigns forever to his and their only propper use benefit and behoof forever and I the said Edward Howcott for my heirs executors administrators do covenant promise and grant to acede with the said Samuel Smith his heirs and assigns that before the ensealing hereof I am the later sole and lawful owner of the above bargained premises and am lawfully seized and possessed of the same in my own proper light as a perfect and absolute estate of Inheritance in fee simple and that the said Samuel Smith his heirs and assigns shall and may from time to time or at all times forever hereafter by force and virtue of these presents lawfully peaceably and quietly have hold use possess occupy and enjoy the said demised and bargained premises with the appertenances free and clear of and from alll manner of former or other gifts grants bargains severs leases mortages wills dowries and all other incumberances whatsoever. Furthermore I the said Edward Howcott for myself my heirs executors and administrators do covenant and engage the above demissed premises to him the said Samuel Smith his heirs or persons whatsoever hereafter to warrant secure or defend. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.
