Sheriff of the County of Beaufort of the one part and John Gray Blount of the County of Beaufort of the other part Witnesseth that whereas by virtue of an execution issued from the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions of the said County of Beaufort against Reading Tyer at the instance of Richd Grist Executor of Slade Pearce for the sum of Eleven Pounds seven shillings & nine pence with interest & the further sum of Three pounds sixteen shillings & 9. cost of Such as of Record may fully appear and whereas the said execution was directed and delivered to said Stephen Owens Esquire Sheriff as aforesaid commanding him that of the Goods & chattles Lands and Tenements of the said Reading Tyre he should cause to be made the aforesaid sums to satisfy the said Execution & the said Stephen Owens Sheriff as af’said in pursuance & by virtue of his Office & the said Execution did seize and take into his hands & custody (there being no goods & chattles to be found) a certain piece or parcel of land situate lying & being in the County of Beaufort on the head of Shepherd’s Run being all the land which said Reading Tyre held on the East side of Shepherds run or lower side thereof on which his brother Archibald Wilcox lived & is part of the land which was formerly held by John Wilcox & sold by Allen Grist then Sheriff under an Execution as his property & purchased by Joseph B Hinton at whose request the same was conveyed by said Allen Grist as Sheriff to the said Reading Tyer & contains by estimation One hundred acres more or less and is part of three Grants one to James or William Gallaway for one hundred acres on both sides of Shepherds Run one to Galloway or Wilcox for fifty acres adjoining the above to the Eastward & the balance part of a Deed from Christopher Hagan to Wilcox and the said Stephen Owens Shff as aforesaid after due advertisement according to law did cause the said piece or parcel of Land with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging to be put up at Public Sale to the highest bidder at the Court House in Washington on the 21st day of May in the year of our Lord 1823 at which time and place the said Richard Grist became the last & highest bidder for the said land with the appurtenances thereunto belonging the said Richard Grist hath now requested the Deed for the same to be made to John Gray Blount herein before mentioned. Now the Indenture Witnesseth that the said Stephen Owens Sheriff of Beaufort County as aforesaid for & in consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand paid by the said John Gray Blount at & before the signing and sealing of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged he the said Stephen Owens Sheriff doth hereby bargain sell alien enfeoff convey & confirm unto the said John Gray Blount his heirs Execors admn & assigns forever all the aforesaid Lands tenements & appurtenances whatsoever with all right title claim or demand of or unto the afore described piece or parcel of land with all the hereditaments and emoluments to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold to his the said John Gray Blount his heirs Exec’ors adm’rs & assigns forever in as full & ample a manner as he the said Sheriff is empowered by virtue of his Office and the said Stephen Owens Sheriff doth hereby covenant promise & agree to & with the said John Gray Blount his heirs Exec’ors adm’rs and assigns who shall & may from time to time & all times hereafter have hold occupy possess & enjoy the said premises with the appurtenances free & clear from all incumbrances had made done or committed by him the said Sheriff or by his order means or procurement & that he the said Stephen Owens Sheriff will warrant & defend the same to the said John Gray Blount his heirs Exec’ors adm’ors or assigns forever so far as his office of Sheriff will admit and no further. In Witness whereof the said Stephen Owens Sheriff of Beaufort County hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day & year first above written Stephen Owens Shff Signed Sealed & delivered in presence of Lewis Leroy Wm S. Holmes May Term 1824 Beaufort Co Co Pleas & Qr Sess’s Then the execution of the within deed from S Owens Shff to JGBlount was acknowledged in Court by the sd Owens let it be Reg. Jos B Hinton C[lk] Additional Comments: The land on Shepherd's Run was owned by Reading Tyre and seized by Sheriff Owens to satisfy an execution against Tyre at the instance of Richard Grist, executor of Slade Pearce's estate. Richard Grist bought the land at a public auction and then had the deed made over to John Gray Blount.
