State of North Carolina Know all men by these presents that I William E Smaw 
of the County of Beaufort for and in consideration of the sum of Four hundred 
dollars lawfull money of the State of North Carolina to me in hand paid by 
John McWilliams of the Town of Washington County & State aforesaid at or 
before the sealing of these presents the receipt whereof I the said William E 
Smaw do hereby acknowledge have bargained and Sold and by these presents do 
bargin and Sell unto the said John McWilliams his exceutors administrators and 
assigns one certain Negro Woman named Dinah and her boy child named Henry 
formerly the property of Henry Smaw  Sen Decd.  And I the said William E Smaw 
for myself my heirs executors administrators and assigns unto the said John 
McWilliams his heirs Executors administrators and assigns against me the said 
William E Smaw my exceutors administrators and assigns against all and every 
other person or persons shall & will warrant and forever defend by these 
presents  In witness where I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal 
this 17th day of May 1823

May Term 1823 Beaufort Co Pleas & Qr Sessions then the execution of the within 
Bill of Sale from Wm E Smaw to John McWilliams was acknowledged in Court by 
the said Smaw let it be Registered.
