Newspaper-maybe Ledger-Advance, Windsor John Lewis Harrington Mayor Of Lewiston Dies At His Home Judge Harrington's Funeral Is Held At Lewiston John Lewis Harrington, aged 71, Mayor and Magistrate of Lewiston, prominent and highly respected citizen, known as Judge Harrington, died Wed. morning, Aug. 24, at about eleven o'clock after a ten days illness with kidney trouble and high blood pressure. He was born in Beaufort County in 1856 and his parents moved to this community when he was an infant. In 1895, he went in the grocery business in Aulander with his brother, J. Lawrence Harrington, in which business he stayed for twelve years. In 1887 he moved to Lewiston and went into the mechanical work there. He spent practically all of the rest of his life there except a few years which he spent in Winston Salem and Macon, Ga. He was the originator of the Harrington Peanut Picker which is now known as the Roanoke Peanut Picker which is manufactured at Lewiston and with which company he was connected at the time of his death. This picker is one of the most popular pickers in this section and is rapidly gaining popularity in other sections. Judge Harrington was prominent in the politics of the county. He was formerly a member of the Board of Education and was also a former member of the Board of County Commissioners. He was married to Miss Martha Ellen Vick, of Woodland, in 1886, who died seven years ago. Funeral services were conducted at Lewiston, by the Reverend Kendricks, pastor of the Lewiston Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. W. L. Clegg, pastor of the Lewiston M.E. Church, Thursday afternoon. The burial was held in Aulander at the Minton burying ground; near the home of Atty. Alex Lassiter. He was buried by the Masons, of which organization he had been a member for many years. He was a member of Brown Memorial Baptist Church, of Winston Salem. He is survived by six sons, Atty. H. G., Carlisle, Picot, and Gay, of Lewiston; James Oliver and Clyde L. Harrington, of Winston Salem; three daughters; Mrs. Obie Earley and Miss Fae Harrington, of Lewiston, and Miss Mary Harrington, of Winston Salem; four brothers; J. Lawrence and C. H. Harrington, of Aulander; P. H. Harrington of Bath; and J. D. Harrington, of Wilmington. He also leaves about fifteen grandchildren.
