Howell, 44, president of the General Building Products Company of Asheville, N.C., which he established ten years ago, died suddenly at his home in suburban Biltmore Forest, Asheville, Monday, February 24, of a heart attack. His death was a shock to family and friends, as he was apparently in the best of health. He was stricken while reading a newspaper shortly after participating in games in the recreation room of his new home, which he and his family had occupied for the first time shortly before Christmas. Mr. Howell was born at Pantago, N.C., in Eastern North Carolina March 6, 1893, but lived the years of his boyhood in Courtland, this county, his father being the late George W. Howell, the senior member of Howell & Wynn, a well- known firm in the County Seat for many years. The family moved to Belhaven, N.C., upon the father’s death in 1905. He was educated at N.C. State College and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucy Grindstaff Howell; a daughter, Miss Ann Howell, a student at Hollins College, Virginia; two sisters, Mrs. C.L. Dowell of Baltimore and Mrs. Henry Harvey of Belhaven; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Claude F. Howell; a nephew, Claude F. Howell, Jr., both of Wilmington, N.C.; an uncle, A.M. Howell of Franklin, and a number of cousins in Norfolk, Suffolk and in this county.
