1. Solomon Cherry Sr* #801 born c1714, Norfolk Co Va, (son of William Cherry Sr* #797 and Elizabeth*(wife:William Cherry #797) #800) married (1) c1730, in 16 years of age, Sarah*(1st wife:Solomon Cherry #801) #9890, No ccc# assign., married (2) 07-20-1757, in 43 years of age, Sarah Eley #645, born 04-08-1738, died 02-13-1806, ccc1203 #17p11. Solomon died 11-14-1777(73), Bertie NC, ccc366 #17p11, Will Book B,p.111-114 Bertie Co. Solomon Cherry #801 & 1st wife Sarah (?) #9890 were my 5th.grandparents. Confusing information regarding Solomon Cherry was reported in DAR records by Martha "Mattie" Jenkins Henderson. She gave Solomon's birth 12-10-1737 and death 11/14/1777. Listed his wife as Sarah Eley. DAR also stated that two friends, Solomon Cherry & John Jenkins were"sworn in"at the same time in Pitt County, John Jenkin's son, Irving #1831, was in the Spanish American War 1812. The information that gives Capt.Solomon Cherry Jr serving in the Spanish American War of 1812? probably is in error. My records give him as dying in 1810. The five sons of Solomon Cherry were Thomas/Robert, Cader, James, William & Capt.Solomon Cherry Jr. Solomon Jr was living in Pitt County, NC in 1790. The living son's of Solomon were in Bertie and Edgecombe counties around 1800. Solomon's first son and second child, Thomas/Robert, was not named in his father's will that was written in Bertie County 1773 (found in will Bk B pg 112) of which I have a copy. Probably Thomas/Robert died prior to this date and therfore was not included in his Solomon's will ? Thomas/Robert #642 according to the Cook book moved to Edgecombe Co. The only know child born to Thomas/Robert and his wife Sarah Rhodes was Aaron #132 [1320] (1760-10/1/1835) who married Elizabeth Knight #133 [1325] (3/3/1773-1841) who was the daughter of John "Joshua" Knight #136 [1489] who married Lucreatia Ann Cherry (1750-1820) #137 [7988]. Edna Cook stated that Aaron was the only child born to this union. Thomas/Robert apparently died intestate at a very young man c1760 at the age of twenty six. I have found no data except the information given on page 100 in Edna Cook Book to support that Thomas/Robert was a son of Solomon. Edna Cook failed to give her source for this data. Edna spent almost a life time collecting family history. She had to find this information on my Thomas or Robert during her research. Edna, like all researchers did not record her family history at 100% all the time but most of her information were home runs. According to available information Thomas/Robert Cherry would have been a grown man by the time his father married his step-mother Sarah Eley #645 [1204] who was Solomon's second wife. Thomas/Robert older sister: Mary was born 1730 when her father Solomon #801 was around 16-17 years old, having been born in 1714. Solomon's third child Cader was born in 1735. When Solomon [366] married his second wife in 1757 it would have been twenty two years between the dates of Cader's birth 1735 and 1757. There was a void of five years between the birth of Mary & Cader. Thomas/Robert was prpbably born in 1833 as the middle child between Mary and Cader. This would have been 27 years prior to the birth of his only son Aaron (1760-1835). Assuming Thomas/Robert was born c1733 this would be in the normal range for children to be born into a family. My records gives Mary Cherry #650 the 1st child of Solomon #801 who married a Mr.(James) Jenkins. All data indicates that Solomon #801 married 1st Sarah (last name unknown) #9890) and had three children:Mary #650 [2471](1730-1798), Thomas/Robert (c1733- ? )#642 [ ]. (the [ ] indicates that they have no assigned Cherry Cousin's Clearinghouse computer number asssigned this person) & Cader #649 [1205] (1735-1782)? The children born to his 2nd wife, Sarah Eley, were William Cherry Elizabeth Cherry #651 [1207] (1776-1827) and Martha Cherry #652 [1206] (b.c1758- ? ). The exact birth dates of all of Solomon's children have not been establisheh. Also a Solomon Cherry was a witness of Thomas Cherry #1559 and other Cherry wills in Nor Co., VA from 1733 to 1737. This would indicate he did not move to NC untill after 1737. A Solomon Cherry was living in Bertie Co in 1769 where he did jury duty. Data shows Solomon Cherry #801l was living in Bertie as found on the Bertie Co.,NC Tax List in 1757 & 1760. Martha Cherry #652 is listed in CCC as the second child of Sarah Eley (his 2nd wife) with date of her birth not known. However, she was listed as the 6th child according to information in Edna Cook's book. In Solomon's will, written 14 November 1773, gives follows:William, Cader, Mary Jenkins, Martha, Elizabeth, Sarah (wife), James & Solomon in that order. At the present time my records list eight (8) Solomon Cherry's that lived in or near Bertie Co during this 1652-1810 time frame: (#1); SOLOMON CHERRY #192 (1737/32-1808) [329] m. 1st Cleary Council & 2nd Sofia; who was born in Beaufort Co and made his Will as recorded in Edge Co.NC; Dated 29 Oct 1808, Book D, p297-299, Proven:Nov Ct 1808. His will found in CCC Issue #13 on p 8-10. (#2); Capt.SOLOMON CHERRY Jr 648# [2472],(1760-1810) (h/o) Mary Eason #1815 m 1779 in Bertie Co, This was the Son of our Solomon Cherry #801. (#3).SOLOMON CHERRY #796 (1652-1693) (s/o) John Cherry #181 the immigrant that came to Norfolk VA and would be the uncle to my Solomon Cherry #801, (#4), my SOLOMON CHERRY Sr #801 (1714-1777) (s/o) William Cherry #797, (s/o) John Cherry #181 the immigrant. This Solomon is my 5th .grandfather. (#5);Solomon III #1649 (1781-1818) (s/o) Wm Cherry Sr #646. (#6), SOLOMON CHERRY #6590 (1750-) (s/o) Aaron Cherry #3663. (#7); SOLOMON CHERRY Sr #8459 (1885-) (s/o) Joseph Blount Chery #2820 and (#8); SOLOMON CHERRY Jr #8461 (s/o) Solomon Cherry #8459. Durning my early research there was a mix-up with Solomon #801 of Bertie Co. and with Solomon #192 who was born in Beaufort Co in 1737-32. This information came from Virginia Louis Newsone a cousin who was born in Ahoskie. Later this was corrected. This Solomon Cherry #192 was (s/o) Lemuel Cherry. This Solomon Cherry #192 married twice but no marriage to a Sarah Eley. After a very through investigation of all available information it shows that the data found in Edna Cook's book is the best or correct information available, given as follows: William Cherry #797 [47] was (f/o) Solomon Cherry #801 [366] (f/o) Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 [ ], (f/o) Aaron Cherry #132 [1320] (f/o) Sally Rhodes Cherry (m/o) Catharine Eily Jones (m/o) Catherine Drake Dozier #15 [7978] (m/o) Martha Helen Lyon #11 [7963] (m/o )me; Hobart L "Pete" Austin #1 [7960]. Using the Edna Cook data all dates and other data now fit together into this puzzle. Additional data: Court records gave a Sarah Eley (#645) as marring a Solomon Cherry in 1757. In his will of 14 Nov 1773 which was made in Bertie Co., Solomon names his wife as Sarah and seven of his eight children; Will book 1,Bertie County dated 8/1777. Please note that there are two Edna Cook Books; one dedicated to Mrs Columbus Washington Mayo dated 1/8/1958 in Wash DC and another dated 11/5/1957 with this book dedicated to "In Memory of Marion" (Solles). There are some visual differences in the two books as some pages have been re-typed etc. Edna Cook wrote that Solomon Cherry #801 [366] (h/o) Sarah (no maiden name given) had eight Children from this union. She stated that Thomas/Robert was not listed in his father's will. She made no reference to Solomon's 2nd wife Sarah Eley. Information given in the CCC Issue #17 p.11 records Solomon Cherry (1714-1773) m. Sarah Eley (1738-1806) & had daughter Mary (1730-1798) (h/o) John Jenkins (1736-1779) (my record gives John Jenkins as (h/o) Mary Willoughby #1857 and his brother James married Mary.. However additional data states that John married first Mary Barns and 2nd Mary Willoughby). Data from Mississippi Society of SAR records sent to me by Virginia Louis "Lou" Overton stated to me she received this info about D.AR Papers through David Henry Henderson #8839 [ ] of Charlotte NC (A cousin via Solomon and my friend for over 25 years). On Aug 7,1996 I met and had lunch with Dave and William "Bill" Boone (a Newsom descendant) from Winton NC. Bill's sister had done extensive research on the Newsom Family. He now has all of her papers, which he received, after she passed away in 1994. We plan to get together again to exchange additional information at a later date. In the SAR Papers it quotes records, which at this time, have not been identified and or where this source of information was found. (Please note that I now have a copy of the Application by Mr Dobbs membership into the S.A.R. These records gave Solomon Cherry b.12-10-1737 (h/o) Sarah Eley (b. 4-8-1738-2 / 3-1- 786) as son of Lemuel Cherry #179 and wife Mary Courtney #6089. It is my belief that this is in error. Lemuel Cherry did have a son named Solomon #192 ( b.ca 1737/32) and d. Nov 1808 but this Solomon marriied 1st Sofia Staton and 2nd Cleary (Clary) Council. My records and CCC gives William Cherry #797 as the father of Solomon Cherry #801. It is my contention that after Solomon's 1st wife Sarah (last name unknown) died Solomon Cherry #801 married as his 2nd wife: Sarah Eley on July 20,1757. In the CCC records it gives.Solomon Cherry #801 [366] as (1714-1777) not (1735-) or (-1773 the year he wrote his will ). Solomon was born Nor.Co.Va (h/o) Sarah & had children:Mary #650 (1730- 1789) [247], Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 [ ] (this data given in the Edna Cook Book but not found in Solomon's Will) & Cader #649 [1205] (1735-1782). Solomon bought land in Bertie Co 1743 & 1753 and probably moved there around this time in his life. Three of his children are thought to have been born around 1730-1735 (Norfolk VA). All of these issues born before the birth of Sarah Eley (their future step-mother?). After Solomon's married Sarah Eley five additional children were born to this union. James #647 [1208] (1758- 1825)m.Elizabeth #1660 [2469], William [1207] m Capt Irving Jenkins #1831. CCC Issue #6 p3 gives Solomon [366] marrying Sarah [1203] and having seven children (not listed was Thomas/Robert #642 [] ). In CCC Issue #17 p11, Solomon [366] (1714-1773) is married to Sarah Eley [1203] (1738-1806) with seven children. Conclusion from this data: Sarah Eley was Solomon's 2nd wife who he married 7-20-1757 as found in Bertie court records. From this marriage to Sarah Eley were five (5 ) additional issues from 1758 until 1776.. Solomon Cherry #801 probably moved from Norfolk Co Va c1738-1743 to Bertie Co as court records show that he purchased land there at that time. His first three children were more than likely born in Nor.Co.VA & came to Bertie Co.at an early age. No record is found regarding his first wife Sarah. She may have died before Solomon came to NC. I have on file a copy of Solomon's #801 will which was sent to me by Dr John E Holt, Vancouver WA on 8/ 10/ 1996. Additional info: Deed BK F p.420, Bertie Co., gives Solomon Cherry purchased 320 A on South side of Cashy Swamp on May 16, 1743 from Jonathan Stanley jun. yeoman ( a yeoman denotes a clerk in the navy or record keeper) for 120 pounds. In Book F page 420 Solomon bought from William Duffiel and wife Sarah, and Tisus Edward in Bertie Co on June 6, 1754 four acres of land for two pounds. This land was on the South side of Cashie Swamp, and was adjacent to Solomon Cherry's line and the Careen Branch. Witnesses were Jonothan Standley and Thomas Wilson. In 1786 Bertie Co.there were three deeds recorded by a Solomon Cherry, also 1789,1790,1792 twice, 1792, 1793 & 1798. These would have been transactions by his son Solomon Jr as Solomon Sr died in 1777. A William Cherry purchased land in Bertie in 1765, 1767 twice, 1768 & 1774. This probably was William, the son of Solomon Cherry #192. William the son of Solomon #801 was born in 1758 & died 1805 and would have been only eight years old in 1765. Researchers in the past combined or failed to properly identify some of the Aaron's, Robert's, Thomas' & Solomon Cherry's making it very difficult to find their station in life. Sometimes marriages were omitted and others added in error. Children were not always listed in parents wills because of death or for person reasons, etc. But after careful study and extensive research from all available records it is my contention that the data established by Edna Cook in her book that gives Aaron Cherry #132 [1320] as the son of Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 [ ] and stated he was the son of Solomon Cherry #801 [366] and his (first) wife Sarah (maiden name unknown). From this information it is my conclusion, after reviewing all my data as outlined above, that my Solomon Cherry #801 was the father of Thomas/Robert #642. Would like very much to have any records that could prove or disprove these findings. The records by Edna Cook (a second cousin) along with court entries seem to give the most concrete evidence avaiable. Additional information would be appreciated very much. On a map of Bertie County (not dated) before Kelford was incorperated are shown three Cherry families that lived up stream on Cashie Swamp and about five miles west of Windsor. 1]. J.P.Cherry, 2]. A. Cherry and 3]. J.Cherry. The map was drawn around 1875. Sarah: From this union are reported four sons and three daughters by informaton supplied by Va Louis Newsom #1847. There is an mix-up on her husband Solomon Cherry as to his date of birth. Edna Cook and CCC gives Solomon's date of birth as 1714 and death as 1777. Va Louis Newson dates are 1738 and 1777 respectively with a daughter Elizabeth Cherry (1776-1827) m. Capt Irving Jenkins (1775-1827). Misc data on Eley family: A Lemuel Eley married Nancy Cherry of Hertford Co area of NC. They had a son John Augustus Eley that went in 1844 to Hempstead Co Ark. Lemuel was the son of Thomas and Jane ELY (Eley). Source not documented but from family bible records. Data supplied bu Lou Newsom Overton on 11-6-1998. From the S.A.R. (Have a copy of application by Dobbs) it gives Eliabeth Cherry as daughter of Solomon Cherry #192 the son of Lemuel "Lem" Cherry #179 of Beauford Co. Yhis is in Error. Elizabeth was the daughter of Solomon Cherry #801 that married first Sarah ? and had three issues. Solomon #801 of Bertie Co NC married 2nd Sarah Eley and had Elizabeth Cherry plus others. See Lem #179 and Solomon #192 for information on this families. Children by Sarah*(1st wife:Solomon Cherry #801): 2. i Mary Cherry #650 born 1725/30. 3. ii Thomas(Robert)Cherry* #642 born 1733. 4. iii Cader Cherry #649 born 1735/6. Children by Sarah Eley: 5. iv James Cherry #647 born c1758. 6. v William Walton Cherry Sr #646 born 1758. 7. vi Capt Solomon Cherry jr #648 born c1760. 8. vii Elizabeth Cherry #651 born 04-10-1776. 9. viii Martha Cherry #652 born c1758. Second Generation 2. Mary Cherry #650 (1.Solomon1) born 1725/30, Norfolk Co Va, married c1746, James Jenkins #1646, born c1718, (son of John Jenkins III #15573 and Anne (Wife: John Jenkins #15573) #15574) died 1796, [2473]. Mary died 1798/1802, Bertie Co. NC, ccc2471 #17p11. Data from CCC gives Mary's date of birth as 1730 and married a Mr Jenkins. We now know that his name was James Jenkins #1646. James was brother of John Jenkins #1856. John's son (Capt) Irving Jenkins married Elizabeth Cherry. Mary was 46 years older than her half-sister Elizabeth (1776-1827). Both were my (Pete Austin #1) 4th Great Aunts. I now have additional information from Robert B. McGill, 8528 E,31st Place, Tulso, OK 74145 Tel (918) 627-9365. Origional information that I received from Lou Overton gave John (the brother of James Jenkins) list Mary Williboughas wife of Mr Jenkins.. Mr. McGill in his data stetes that John #1856 married Mary Barns. He sent me a copy of the will of Mary Barn father's in which he left 100 acres to his grandson Isaac Jenkins (this was the first son of John Jenkins and Mary Cherry Jenkins). It is probable that from these records that John Jenkins married as his1st wife Mary Barns and they had one issue which eas named in his grandmother Mary Barms' will and that John married 2nd Mary Willoughby and they had nine additional children.. See John Jenkins #1856 for more information on these families. Robert McGill e-mail . Children: i Robert Jenkins #15590 born 1757, Bertie Co NC, married Mary Williford #15604. Robert died 1799. ii Nathan Jenkins #15591 born 1753, Bertie Co NC, married Unknown (Wife Nathan Jekins #15591) #15607. Nathan died 1823. Moved c 1800/05 to Caldwell and Hopkins (later Union and Webster) Counties in KY, Also found in Christian Co KY iii Martha Jenkins #15592 born 1761, Bertie Co NC, married Abner Williford #15649. Martha died 1823. iv Elizabeth Jenkins #15593 born 1751, Bertie, married Cader Mitchell #15651. Elizabeth died 1800. v Mary Jenkins #15594 born 1755, Bertie Co NC, married Mr Powell (Hus:Mary Jenkins #15594) #15652. vi John Jenkins #15595. vii James Jenkins Jr #15596 born 1749, married Winifred Mitchell #15650. James died 1817. viii Isaac Jenkins #15597 born 1759, married Mary (1st Wife Isaac Jenkins #15597) #15598. Isaac died 1799. 3. Thomas(Robert)Cherry* #642 (1.Solomon1) born 1733, Va, married Sarah Rhodes* #643, born 1733, died aft 1760. Thomas(Robert)Cherry* died aft 1759, Edgecombe Co.,NC. The only record found of Thomas/Robert Cherry is in the book by Edna Cook on page 100. At one time Thomas/Robert #642 [] and Thomas Cherry #6200 [477] were listed as the same person. Cook in her book had also made the same error because she gave Thomas (Robert) as being married to Rachel Outlaw as his 2nd wife after the death of his 1st wife Sarah Rhodes Cherry #643 []. Both Thomas (1755-1812) [477] & Thomas/Robert (1733-?) [ ] reported to have died in 1812. In Thomas' [477] will which is recorded in Bertie Co. Dated 28 Sept 1812; Thomas #6200 died 1812. This Thomas names Rachel Outlaw as his wife & gives the following Children: Aaron, James, Theophilus, Thomas, Docton and Millie Cherry. Records now prove that this Thomas #6200 [477] was the son of Aaron Cherry #3663 [306]. Additional information found in North Carolina LDS files gives this info: on Page number 4,725, list Milley Cherry and gives her parents as Thomas Cherry & Rachel Outlaw .She was born 1807 Bertie Co. Page #4,716 gives Aaron Cherry b.1796, page #4,718 gives Doctron b.1804, page #4,720: James b 1798, page #4,727 Theophilus born 1800, & page #4,728 Thomas born 1803. all of the above children were born in Bertie Co. to Thomas Cherry #6200 and wife Rachel Outlaw. This data gives proof that Thomas Cherry #6200 and wife Rachel were not the parents of Aaron #132 [1320] (1760-1835) that married Elizabeth Knight #133 [1388]. Some researchers recorded her middle name as Holmes. I have no record that she had a middle name. I have purged my files for all the listed Aaron Cherry's and there is no one that fit this slot except the Aaron Cherry that I recorded from Edna Cook's book. Her information gives Aaron Cherry #132 [1320] as the only son of Thomas (Robert) Cherry #642 [ ] and Sarah Rhodes #643 []. Note: Lunsford Rhodes Cherry & Sarah Rhodes Cherry were Robert (Thomas) grandchildren ,and one could assume, named for their grandmothers' maiden name. Probably Robert (Thmas) Cherrys' wife Sarah Rhodes was related to William H Rhodes, a noted Bertie County author that wrote a poem about the hanging tree found in a section of Indian Woods. It was the home of the well known Tuscarora Indian Tribe. There is this huge tree, was still standing in the 19th century that was immortalized by William Rhodes in his a long poem he wrote called "The Indian Gallows". It was about a tree where many an Indian lost their life for foul conduct. Corrected data now has Thomas #6200 [477] and his brother Robert Cherry #644 as children of Aaron Cherry #3663 [306]. Also see Issue #14, July 1994 page 17, chart #103, CCC for descendants information regarding Aaron Cherry [1320].This material is published in Cherry Cousins' Clearinghouse, John H.Cherry, 1308 Oakhurst Dr.,Southlake,TX 76092. On many occasions I have had the opportunity and the privilege to attend family reunions that included relatives from each side of these Cherry families. Robert [474] and Aaron [1320] descendants married each other:Charles Henry Cherry [8035] my 6th cousin, twice removed, married Annabel Lee Mayo [8048] was my 1st cousin, once removed. Cousin's Annabel Mayo Cherry and her daughter Ruth Mayo Cherry White have visited in my parents home many times over the years. Annabel Cherry contributed a great deal of information and family history for many of the books written about the Cherry and Mayo families. She was a school teacher. Edna Cook in her book gives the father of Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 as Solomon Cherry sr #801 (ccc366) & wife Sarah # 9890 (no CCC#). I have attended reunions with cousin Joseph Carlton Cherry jr 2451 (ccc7313) the famous lawyer for the NY Yankee "Catfish" Hunters, also Cousin Hazel Rawls Carr #593 (ccc6941). We each have the same common ancestor in Solomon Cherry I #801 (ccc366) that m.Sarah & 2nd Sarah Eley #645.I also have the data for the parents of Elizabeth Knight #133 [1325] who married Aaron Cherry #132 [1320] (s/o) Thomas/Robert []. David Henderson #8839 [] also a descendant of a Solomon Cherry (h/o) Sara Eley #645 [1203] his 2nd wife has records that there were two Solomon's: one born in 1714 and the other born 12-10 1737. Information in the CCC gives the birth dates of Solomon #801 [366] children in two different time periods: 1730-1735 and 1758-c1776. All in the first group born before Sarah Eley was born. Therefore; she could not have been their mother. Thomas/Robert Cherry who is listed as a son of Solomon & Sarah would have been born to this first group and the void between Mary B.1730 & Cader have slots that fits into his birth of c1733, 1737 to 1743. These date fit into the birth date of his child Aaron Cherry #132 [1320] who was born in 1660. I know many descendants of Robert #644 that married Mary Worsley #794 [1317]. Edna Cook gave only one child born to Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 []. I can find no records regarding this Thomas or Robert or Thomas Robert Cherry except that which is given in Edna Cook's Book. Also in a book by Joseph Watsons Abstract of Wills in Deed Book 4 page 691 is where John Smith of Martin Co NC planter sold to Robert Cherry of Bertie Co.,planter Feb.5 1787, for 80 pounds. a track of 100 acres in Edgecombe Co on Coneto, the upper end of Bear Island, Including the Plantation whereon John Hardy formerly lived; Wit: Malachi Smith, Wm Hyman. Living in Edgecombe Co at that time was another Robert Cherry #644 who was the son of Aaron Cherry #3663 [306]. Do not know which Robert bought this property. However this property was in the same area of Edgecombe Co that Aaron Cherry signed documents in VA in 1733 to 1737, later he moving to Bertie County with or without his first wife Sarah (last name unknown). He married 2nd Sarah Eley 7/20/1857. Solomon probably by his first wife Sarah (last name unknown?), he had three children: Mary b.1830, Thomas/Robert b.1833 ? and Cader b.1835 all born in VA. The second set of children were born in Bertie to Solomon & his 2nd wife Sarah Eley. Cader Cherry brother of Thomas/Robert) Cherry moved to Edgecombe Co where he died there before May 27,1882. This family group of Cader and Thomas/Robert Cherry's all lived in what at one time was Martin Co in the Conetoe Creek area that was later made a part of Edge Co. In the Will of Joshua Wilkinson dated Oct.29 1817 he leaves to his wife during her widowerhood the land on E side of branch adjoining lands of Robert Cherry ? and William Worsley. This is the land that was willed to his son Silas. This property was later bought by Frederick Jones jr #126 my Gr GR Grandfather (h/o) Sally Rhodes Cherry #127 [1328] the daughter of Aaron Cherry #132 [1320]. The now restored Wilkinson/ Jones/Dozier home place is where my Grandmother Catherine Drake Dozier Lyon #15 [7978] was born 13 May 1862. Located near Conetoe and Conetoe Swamp area. Just east was the property of Solomon Cherry #192, Joseph Taylor, Nathan Mayo, William Crisp, John Llewelling, Wm Smith, Thomas Best, Charles Council, John Holland, Daniel Buntin, James Edmondson, Samuel Gainer, Marmaduke Norfleet (owned land but lived in Rich Square), Samuel Crisp, William Wallace and Marcum Manning who owned 640 A adjoining south side of what is now Hwy #11. I have a map showing this area as prepare by Doris Wilson from Land Grants. Most of these people are related to my family by one way or another. Either cousins or connected through marriage. There was a Robert Cherry #12676 (s/o) Cader Cherry #649 (b/o) Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 that was confused with each other at times. I have had personal contact with David Henderson #8839 [ ] who is a direct descendant of Elizabeth Cherry #651 the daughter of Solomon. He is the GR GR GR GR Grandson of Solomon Cherry #801. I have known David for about 25 years. He is a renowned lawyer, writer and sportsman with a keen interest in bird hunting. I first met "Dave" while we were involved in bird hunting field trials. It was years later that I found that we were fourth cousins twice removed. He is the author of several books and many feature articles in leading sport magazines. He and his son David (lawyer) both live in Charlotte, NC. David has just published a new book "SPOOK: Tales of A Bird Dog" (Aug.1995). As a follow through with David Henry Henderson I met with him Aug 9 1996 for lunch. Also attending was William "Bill" Boone a cousin to David through the Newsom's. I had written Bill's sister who was from Winton, NC (now deceased). He had gotten my phone # from my letter to her and gave me a call to get acquainted. It was a very rewarding get-to-gather as we all have a keen interest in family history. I knew Bill's family who comes through the Newsom family of Hertford Co. I have known many of David's family members from Aulander and the area in-and-around Bertie and Hertford Co. We both have contacted Virginia "Lou" Louis Newsom Overton #1847 who has sent me data on her relatives & requested Solomon Cherry #801 data. Lou was GR GR GR GR Granddaughter of Solomon #801 and is my ("Pete"Austin #1) fourth cousin twice removed through Solomon' 2nd wife Sarah Eley #645 (m/o) Elizabeth Cherry (1776-1827) #651 (w/o) Capt Irving Jenkins (1775-1827) #1831. The information given on Solomon (1838 in Beaufort Co) was in error in DAR & SAR records. It quoted Bible records that have not been found. The original information came from SAR application by Cary Wallace Dobb and Martha"Mattie" Jean Jenkins used this information in her application into DAR. Thomas/Robert's brother Cader purchased 640 acres in Edge.Co. from Thomas Rhodes of Bertie. Area was Dark Island in the Conetoe Pocossin & witnessed by Elizabeth Rhodes on 2/11/1779. This Cheery family was well established in the Coneto area of Edgecombe Co. Both Aaron and Cader have court records supporting these findings. It is my contention, until proven wrong, that Robert (Thomas) Cherry #642 [ ] was the son of Solomon Cherry #801 [366] as outlined in these documents give above. Sarah: Sarah Rhodes married Thomas (Robert) Cherry and had one sons Aaron #132 [1320] No additional information available. Aaron named two of his children with names:Lusford Rhodes Cherry and Sarah Rhodes Cherry. Their cousin Henry Rhodes Cherry #2958 who was the son of Theophilus Cherry #792 also had the Rhodes name. Henry was a hero of the Civil War and lived in Bethel,NC where he died 1867. He never married. Information found in the Smallwood book page 265 gives information on the Rhodes family of Bertie County starting with Anthony Rhodes #4210 (?-1797 who was the Gr Gr Grandfather of Emily "Millie" Harry Pittman #795 (?-1839) 1st wife of Lunsford Rhodes Cherry #134. No know connection with Sarah Rhodes #643 (w/o) Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 []. To this date no data has been found to identify Sarah Rhodes except that found on page 100 in Edna Cook Book. I have a copy and it is also found in the Edgecombe County Memorial Library in Tarboro, NC. When cousin's marry cousin's it usually becomes a close kept" family only" secret. Records not entered into bibles etc. These events just get lost in time, hoping they will someday go away. I have several family cousin to cousin marriages in my Cherry history. I have been digging deep in order to find the facts about these marriages. My descendant chart shows three direct connections with John Cherry #181 [35] the immigrant. Some did not know that they were related before they married. Others may have known but fell in love and were willing to face the music from their parents regardless of how they may have felt. Some ran away to new locations hoping time could cure all ills and any "new born" would heal the pain that they may have caused at an earlier date. Some parents rewrote their wills and left out those that had not done according to the way of the church and were not willing to forgive the way of the heart. Only clue I have to this is that told me by my second cousin Ruth Lee Mayo White who said "that it was a family held secret that our Gr Gr Grandparents were cousins and the records were never made available". I must say they did a good job in keeping them concealed. But I think I now have found enough data and facts to make these connections that were never may public before, except in the Edna Cook Book. Checkout what I feel is now correct and let me know if you agree. Aaron Cherry #132 [1320] (s/o) Thomas/Robert #642 [] was 3rd cousin once removed of his wife Elizabeth Knight #133 [1325] (d/o) Lucretia Ann Cherry #137 [7988]. Both Aaron Cherry and Lucretia Ann Cherry had been lost in the Cherry forest with little information to add these branches to the trunk of our main family tree. Now we can with the information found in Court and bible records we can now feel pretty sure that Aaron was the son of Thomas/Robert Cherry that married Sarah Rhodes. Children: i Aaron Cherry* #132 born 1760, dates:Family Bible records, Bertie Co(?), married 07-22-1798, Elizabeth Knight* g.g.g.g.grandmother #133, born 03- 03-1773, (daughter of John (Joshua) Knight jr* 4th grandfather #136 and Lucretia Ann Cherry* 4-GrP #137) died 01-14-1841, Abstract Tarboro Press 1841, ccc1325. Aaron was my GR GR GR Grandfather. Aaron #132 was born in Bertie Co 1760 to Thomas/Robert Cherry and Sally Rhodes. There was a mix-up with Aaron #132 and Aaron Cherry #8827 who was the son of Thomas Cherry #6200 that was born during the last half of 1790 in Bertie Co. Found in Federal Census 1830: Aaron Cherry, living in District 15, the same district as that of his son Lunsford Rhodes Cherry #134 and recorded as No. 1210 by the census taker. FW; 1M 60-70 1F 50-60 SL:10. Note: Aaron #132 was born in 1760 and wife Elizabeth Knight #133 in 1773. Also listed in this 1830 Federal Census was another Aaron Cherry FW 1M 20-30, 1F30-40. (Listed as No. 915 in district 11, Edgecombe Co) *Federal Census 1850 gives an Aaron Cherry No. 668 as a laborer born in 1897 and wife Eliza .b.1796. My Aaron #132 and Elizabeth #133 died 1835 and 1841 respectively so they would not be listed in 1850 census). This Aaron may have been the son of Levi Cherry #835. Levi's son is listed as Aaron Cherry #843 in my program. Note:NC Death in Edgecombe Co. by Joseph Watts:Aaron Cherry d. 15 Nov 1858 from burns. This data may be the"unknown" Aaron Cherry as given in 1950 Census. There is another Aaron Cherry whos wife was Elizabeth with last name as Harmon. Thomas Cherry #6200 [306]will of Nov.1812 named son Aaron Cherry (at one time it was thought that this was Aaron #132) and bequeath him land on south side Cashie Swamp. I was born in this area: Cashie River starts in the Albemarle Sound and passes through Windsor NC and continues northwest through Bertie County. It is only a small stream as it passes Harrell Siding which is only a mile from where I lived as a child. I caught shiners here many time to be used as bait to fish for crappy with my father. We had a live bait box in our back yard and it was my responsibility to keep it stocked for our Saturday's trip to Cashie Broad, Roanoke Broad or other favorite fishing places. The Cashie is a rather small river and after passing Windsor; the County Seat, it becomes only a stream. The swampy area could be any area from Cashie Neck in the east to Connarista Swamp to the west. I need a copy of this deed in order to identify Thomas's property. In the Book North Carolina Deaths in Edgecombe Co., By Joseph Watt: stated that Aaron Cherry (#132) "an aged and respected citizen" died 1 Oct 1835 (1760-1835). This data fits my Aaron Cherry #132 who married Elizabeth Knight #133 and had three children: Lunsford Rhodes Cherry #134, Lewis Knight Cherry #135 and Sally Rhodes Cherry #127. Aaron Cherry #132 married his third cousin once removed Elizabeth Knight #133. My Gr Gr Gr Grand parents Frederick Jones #126 [1331] (h/o) Sally Rhodes Cherry #133 who was the (d/o) Aaron Cherry. Frederick Jones jr and Sally bought the now historical Wilkinson-Jones-Dozier home place where my grand mother Catharine Drake Dozier Lyon #15 [7978] was raised. In my file of bible, court record and books I have all the data needed to follow Aaron Cherry #132 (s/o) Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 to myself (Pete Austin #1). Thomas/Robert (s/o) Solomon #801 was born in Norfolk Co VA, moved to Bertie Co as a child. Edna gives him a son of Solomon #801 and stated that he was not named in his will and later moved to Edgecombe where my ancestors were born. It is assumed that Thomas/Robert moved to Edgecome. We do know that his son Aaron moved there before 1800. My Gr Gr Gr Grandmother Sarah Rhodes Cherry Jones, my Gr Gr Grandmother Catharine Emily Jones Dozier, My Grandmother Catherine Drake Dozier Lyon and my mother Martha Helen Lyon Austin was all born in Edgecombe Co. My mother moved to Kelford, Bertie Co as a school teacher in 1919 after graduation from ECU (formally ECTC-East Carolina Teacher College). I was born in Kelford, Bertie Co Jan 20, 1925. Drafted into the USNR 1943-1946, attended NCSU 1946-49 in Raleigh, where I met and married Dorothy LaRue Weathers Sept 10,1949 just before entering graduate school. We moved to Williamston, Martin Co where I was employed as a teacher in Williamston High School in 1950. Joined the Belk Department Stores Jan 21, 1952 and transferred May 1963 to the home office as a buyer for fabrics and home furnishings with Belk Store Services.. We first lived on Margate Ave., Charlotte,NC and in 1969 moved to 204 Courtney Lane, Matthews, Mechlenburg Co NC. 28105-1576. (704) 847-4135 where we still reside. Retired as Sales Promotional Director for the 300 Belk Stores on Jan 31, 1990 after 38 years of service. Aaron Cherry #132 was the only know child born to Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 [] (1733- ?) (h/o) Sarah Rhodes #643 [] (17??-?) who was born in Bertie Co 1760 and died in Edgecombe in 1835. Aaron's father Thomas/Robert Cherry #642 [] is found on page 100 in the Edna Cook Book (I have a copy of both of her books that has some variations in each from the other ) and he was named as a son of Solomon Cherry Thomas/Robert c1933 and Cader c1735. They were born in Norfolk Co VA and later moved to Bertie Co. It was in Bertie that Solomon married 2nd Sarah Ealey and had five additional children: James, William Walton, Capt Solomon jr, Elizabeth and Martha. In 1776 Cader Cherry a brother of Thomas/Robert purchased 640 acres from Thomas Rhodes of Bertie County. In Cook's data she states that Thomas/Robert moved from Bertie to Edgecombe. I have no proof but we do know that his only known son Aaron did move there in the late 1790's. It Could have been that Thomas/Robert moved to the land that was owned by (his father-in-law) Thomas Rhodes of Bertie that was located in Conetoe Swamp area of Edgecombe and after his death this property was bought by his brother Cader. It appears that Thomas/Robert Cherry died very young or his wife may have also because there is only one known issue born to this union. I have found no record of land ownership of court records regarding Thomas/Robert but they didn't just vanished from the face of the earth without a trace of them except that given by Cook. Hopefully something will be found that will identify this couple and their place in history. The Conetoe Swamp area of Edgecome Co was noted for the mosquito and malaria problems. Slaves dug drainage ditched as recalled by my grandmother (in her book on Edgecombe Co) when not working in the fields. This help too drain the swamps and also reclaimed the rich black soil. After the land wasdrained they would blast and dig out the stumps to make it ready for planting. Most of the trees were pine and these stumps were piled high in a pit and burned so the tar would seep out and then beused for patching a roof or boat. Tar was put in barrels and sold along with other naval supplies. The Port of Tarboro was only a few miles away. You can still see these old tar pits that still remain throughout the country side. Now grown up with aged trees. I've found many while bird hunting over the years. Some would be 30-40 feet across and 5-10 feet high. They were thought to have been Indian Mounds until they found the tar and coals still remained inside. Almost all of the land deeds during that time mentioned the many swamps and islands when giving their boundaries. It was choice land for raising row crops such as corn, cotton and tobacco. Thomas/Robert and Sarah were married "?" c1759 or sooner (Aaron born 1760). Probably Thomas/Robert died or had moved before 1773 because this was the year that his father Solomon 1776 from Thomas Rhodes of Bertie land that was in Edgecombe. Could Thomas/Robert have lived on this property prior to his brother making the purchase? Using this information, it is possible that Thomas/Robert never owned property and maybe died between 1760 and 1773 without official records. His son Aaron Cherry #132 owned property and 10 slaves in 1830 census. Normally it was assumed that a person or slave could cultivate 20-30 acres of cropland. They had to broadcast the stable manure from the animal stalls, break-up the land in the spring, run and list the rows, plant, cultivate, chop-out the grass and then make the harvest in the fall. With a force of 10 slaves you could tend a 200 acre plantation or larger. Aaron married Elizabeth Knight #133 and the Exr. of (her husband) Aaron's will in 1835 were her (brother) Jesse C Knight#139 & (her 1st cousin once removed) Charles Walker Knight #1716. In the John Young record it is given that Aaron was living in Bertie Co in 1781 where he was on the County Tax roster and was still there during most of the 1790's. Aaron moved to Edgecombe near the end of 1790. He was in Edgecombe in 1800 through 1835. The 1800 census gives Aaron as living close to Charles Wilkinson and his son Lunsford R Cherry (district #15). He was living with his wife, with no children in the household. Aaron was married in the early 1790's. Aaron died in Edgecombe Co Oct 1, 1735 and his will was in probate the following month. There is a conflict in the marriage date of Aaron and Elizabeth. Young gives both the dates of early 1790's and that of 22 July 1798. This was also the same date given as the birth of his oldest son Lunsford R Cherry 22 July 1798. A review of my photo copies on the births and deaths as found in the bibles of Richmond Dozier, Frederick Jones and John Henry Dozier I find no marriage dates for Aaron and Elizabeth. So I have no real proof of Aaron's marriage. Thomas/Robert according to Cook married Sarah Rhodes and had one child named Aaron #132 (I have photo copies of these original family bible entries plus court records from this point forward regarding my family descendants) who married Elizabeth Knight #133 the daughter of John "Joshua" Knight and Ann Lucreatia Cherry #137. She was the daughter of Jonathan Cherry #3099 (s/o) Faithful #3618. Jonathan was a brick mason that lived in Martin Co Williamston NC. His son Jonathan jr who moved to Tenn.was also omitted from his father's will. Solomon's #801 father William Cherry did not name all of his children in his will. So I would presume that being omitted from a parents will does not mean you were not born. Data on the Cherry's can be found in Edna Cook's Book, pages 78-80, 107. Elizabeth: Mar.12,1840. Feb. Ct. 1841. Bk.E Pg 250. Dau: Sally D.(?) Jones ( Sarah Rhodes Cherry #127 (w/o) Frederick Jones,Jr # 126 ) all my property of every description: good notes amounting to $1000 to heirs of Lewis K. CCC records gave her name as Elizabeth "Holmes" Knight in issue # 6, Query 25, July 1,1992; No where in my records is the middle name Holmes is recorded. Her mother-in-law was Sarah Holmes. In court records of William W. [Walker ] Knight [#138 (s/o) John "Joshua"Knight jr #136 (w/o) Ann Lucretia Cherry #137] there was a settlement of William W Knight's estate on 26 Jan 1846. In this document are named [ the children of his deceased sister Lucretia Cherry Knight #1174 (w/o) Esn. Also named were [(the children of Elizabeth Knight #133 now deceased (w/o) Aaron Cherry #132]; Lunsford Rhodes Cherry [#134] and Sarah Rhodes Cherry #127 [w/o) Frederick Jones Jr #126 my g.g.g. Grandparents who had another son Lewis Knight Cherry that at this time was deceased. In the 1840 census Elizabeth #133 was not the head of her household. Probable living with one of her children. Elizabeth's obituary is found in the Jan 18, 1841 edition of the Tarboro Press. 4. Cader Cherry #649 (1.Solomon1) born 1735/6, Va, married Judith"Judah"Burnett #834, born c1735, ccc2464 #17p12. Cader died bef 05-27-1782, Edgecombe Co, ccc1205 #14p16. Cader Cherry living in Edgecombe Co. in 1779, he and his wife "Juda" signed deeds in 1780. He was the father of Livi Cherry of Edge.Co. Variation in data: My records:Cader d.1816 where ccc gives 1782. LDS page #4,717 NC Male, Born c1736, son of Solomon Cherry & Mrs Sarah Cherry in Bertie Co. If data is correct Cader was brother of Thomas(Robert)Cherry #642 making Cader my ("Pete" #1) Gr Gr Gr Gr Great Uncle. Solomon Cherry #801 [366] was married 1st to a Sarah (last name ?) and from this marriage there were born children named: 1st.Mary #650 (1730-), 2nd.? Thomas (or Robert) #642 (1733-) (not listed in father's will but by Edna Cook) & 3rd.Cader #649 (1735/6-1782). After the death of his 1st wife Sarah, record show that a Solomon (#801 [366]) (c1714-11/14/1777 married Sarah Eley #645 [1203] (4/8/1738-2/13/1806) on 7/20/1757. Solomon would have been 44 years of age when the 1st child by his 2nd wife was born and around 62 when Elizabeth #651 was born on 4/10/1776. In CCC: Levi, William & Kitchen Cherry are listed; info by John E Young gives Wilie (with Robert and Wright given as assumed sons of Cader Cherry #649) Cader died interstate and was only about 47 years of age. After Cader died, his widow Judith married a neighbor Robert Hardy. Cader Cherry, planter of Edge Co purchased 640 acres for 150 pounds along Conetoe Pocossin in Edgecombe Co. from Thomas Rhodes of Bertie Co on 2/11/1779. The area was called Dark Island and was wittnessed by a Elizabeth Rhodes. Note: Thomas (Robert) Cherry married Sarah Rhodes. What relationship is this Sarah to the above Rhodes? Is she their child? It is in this same area of Edge Co.NC that many other Cherry's lived. Solomon Cherry #192 owned considerable property along Conotoe Creek and Crisp swamp that is found along the Edgecombe, Martin and Pitt County lines. Have land transactions of a Solomon Cherry in Pitt and Edgecombe Counties bought and sold considerable pieces of property much of which was given to his many children. Also right in the middle of this area were many other Cherry families. Sally Rhodes Cherry #127 (w/o) Frederick Jones Jr #126 [1331] (d/o) Aaron Cherry #132 (s/o) Thomas/Robert Cherry (b/o) Cader Cherry #649. Lunsford Rhodes Cherry brother to Sally Rhodes Cherry are Gr nephew/niece of Cader that bought property from Thomas Rhodes who probably was related to Sarah (Sally) Rhodes (w/o) Thomas (Robert) Cherry #642 that sold 640 acres on Conetoe Pocossin (Swamp) to Cader in 1779. This is the area that Cader Cherry #649 [1205] lived. This area of Bertie became Martin & later made Edgecombe. I have the history and formation of Edgecome Co and the area that was divided to form other counties. At one time this area of Conetoe Creek reported to six different government centers until the Tarboro Court House finally became their County Seat. Where the Court House now stands was the property of my Great,Great Grandfather and his brother's store. James Henry Dozier and William Livingston Dozier operated a general merchandise store there until after the Civil War. Depression forced them to return to the farm of his wife's mother Catheraine Emily Jones in Conetoe. They built a log cabin on her share of the plantation until they moved into the big house around 1866. Unfortunate for my Gr Gr Grandfather the notes due him was from people who had lost everything just as they had. My grandmother never forgave the "Yankee Carpet Baggers" which she wrote about in her book of which a copy can be found in the Edgecombe Memorial Library in Tarboro,NC., & hardship and struggle they had during the reconstruction days. They were family and she gave the lighter side of their life & about how they enjoyed Camp Meetings during Revival Week when the Skewarkee conference would come to their church and they would gather under the big trees in the their front yard and everyone brought picnic baskets and shared. The circulating Bishop would stay in her parents house and they would sit around in the evenings and exchange news and current events that had taken place since the last revival. Many of the neighbors dropped by to bring what little goodies they had to share during this great social and religious event. All the men would gather to discuss national, state and local affairs. The women would gather together in the parlor to talk about women folk things. Grandmother would slip from one group to the other and try to catch any or all of gossip whenever she could. She would slip-up and give-away some of the secrets she have overheard and her parents would correct her by saying you shouldn't eve drop on adults. Later her mother would get her aside & pump her for any little bit of gossip she just might have happen to hear when she was near by when it was being told. No newspapers, radios, TV etc. Little"Katie" became their news source and she enjoyed being their grapevine. My Grandmother loved her family. She told me about he childhood and the many, many cousins that we had. Everyone called her "Cousin Kate". Later I found out that most of them really were our cousins. She was a part of almost all of the key families in Edgecome Co., either by blood or marriage. Since I started this project to "round-up" all my kin I have found many, many surprises. Important data: Cader had children that were born in same time frame as that of his brother Thomas/Robert (f/o) Aaron Cherry #132 (1760-1835). Cader was not listed in 1790 census but his sons Levi #12, Robert #13, William #14, Wright #16, and Wiley #17 were listed together which would indicated they all lived as neighbors on the Conetoe Creek near Mayo's Cross Road because they all registered at the same time. One after the other. This area is where Cader bought 640 acres in 1779 from Thomas Rhodes of Bertie Co. Judith"Judah"Burnett: Reported in Edgecombe Co in 1779. Married first Cader Cherry #646 and second Robert Hardy #8942. No known issue this union. She was the daughter of Matthew Birnett, Will 12/12/1790 Bk1,p216-217. This is the estate record of Levi Cherry: account of sale held by the Admr., March 18,1824. Sally Cherry (wife?) was the principle buyer, Aaron (son?), John W. (son of Robert Cherry?), Eason Cherry (son?) bought. Sally Cherry (wife?)bought the bible. This information gives Levi Cherry had a son by the name of Aaron Cherry which is entered as Aaron #843. Estate records: Division of Negroes into eight lots which were drawn by Aron Atkinson ( wife Sally Cherry), Elijah Pippen (wife Spica), Sally Cherry (widow), Silas Everett (Rebecca), the heirs on Jno. Wilkinson (Rhoda), Jonas Cobb (Elizabeth), Aaron Cherry and Lemuel Thigpen (Anna); March 10,1826, May Ct 1826. Data from John E Young gives following: Levi Cherry [C1a7f3a][2465] son of Cader Cherry [1205] and Judith Burnett of Beaufort and Edgecombe Co NC, was born about 1755, probably in Beaufort Co since his father lived there in 1743. Levi Married Sally____? who died in 1835 in Edgecombe Co. They had moved to Edge. by 1776 because on 19 October that year Edward Cobb of Edge Co, planter, sold to Levi Cherry of same, planter, 175 acres on Averoy's Creek for 85 Pounds. Witnesses were Cader Cherry, John Thigpen and Joonathan Thigpen. And on 15 Feb 1783 William Gainer of Halifax Co sold 200 acres to Thomas Lewis of Edge.Co. This land was adjoining the property of James Thigpen, Levi Cherry and Clementine Leggett, and was on the north side of Tar river on "Conetoe Pocosin". One of the witnesses at this sale was David Cobb. From these two land deeds, we know that Levi (and probably his father Cader Cherry) lived in a neighborhood of Cobbs and Thigpen families on Avery's Creek. on the north side of the Tar River near the Conetoe River (swamp/pocosin). Levi's daughter Elizabeth married Jonas Cobb. Levi was in the 1st Regiment of the NC Militia. Kinchen Cherry was my ("Pete"Austin #1) second cousin fourth removed. Have had a mix-up on Kinchen Cherry. I had a Kinchen Cherry b 1755 and was son of Levi Cherry #835. Dropped for the present time as I'm not sure it he wasn't the same Levi:son of Cader. Will add him back if additional info is found. His first wife was Mary Little. iii William Cherry #12674 []. iv Wiley Cherry #12675 []. v Robert Cherry #12676 []. No proof Cader Cherry was his father. Info from John Young. In 1781 a Robert Cherry on Bertie Tax list. On Feb 5,1789 for 80 Pounds John Smith sold to Robert Cherry of Bertie, planter 100 acres on Coneto, upper end of Bear Island. This land included the plantation where John Hardy formerly lived. A Robert Cherry gave land bought of William Conega and Joseph Pippen. vi Wright Cherry #6624 born 1756, married c1789, Mourning Biggs #6615, born 1755, Martin Co., (daughter of Joseph Biggs #5993 and Margaret Eastwood #5994) died 02-15-1822, [8963]. Wright died 04-or-05-1804, Edge Co.NC, [8984]. Need proof that Wright was son of Cader Cherry. His wife Mourning Biggs (d/o) Joseph Biggs #5993 (h/o) Margaret Eastwood #5994 (d/o) Thomas Eastwood # 6470 and wife Ruth Cherry #813 (d/o) Faithful Cherry #798 (h/o) Patience # 808. John Young's information; Wright Cherry [8984], probably son of William Cherry (unknown) and a brother of William Cherry [4002] who moved to Warren Co KY was born between 1756 and 1774 in NC. He had married Mouring Biggs [8983] c1789. Found in her father's will as Mouring Biggs. Wright was living in Halifax district of Edge Co in 1790 in the area of five other Cherry households: Levi, Robert, William, Willie and a 2nd William Cherry. 1800 Census lists Mourning as daughter of Margaret Eastwood [4631] and Joseph Biggs. Wright died either Apr or May 1804, and his estate was settled in Feb 1806 in Edge Co. Lemuel Thigpen was appointed the administrator, hence there was no will. After Wright's death Mouring married William Burkitt by Nov.3,1819 (Edge Co deed book 16, pg 228) and died between Nov 3,1818 and Feb 15,1822. On these dates she and her children transferred title of land in Edge Co deed bk 16,pg 228 and Bk 17,pg 431 & 432. Buyers of Wright's estate were the widow Mouring, Levi Cherry, Wiley Cherry jr, Robert Cherry, Obed Cherry, Wilie Cherry and Willie Cherry. Deed book 17, page 431 & 433 show that Polly Cherry was one of the two heirs of Wright who received land at the death of Mourning; the other heirs appear to be Obed Cherry, who transferred his half interest (upon his death?) to Polly by 13 Feb 1822 ( Polly was perhaps a daughter and not a sister?). Wright and Mouring had one, or two children and none recorded from her marriage to William Burkitt. Since Obadiah, son of Wright, was a child in 1801, and their was an Obed who bought property at Wright's estate sale. It may be possible that Wright was related to Obed Sr, Fanny and other buyers at his estate sale. James Biggs' (husband of Jemina Cherry) sister was Mouring Biggs, Wright's wife. 5. James Cherry #647 (1.Solomon1) born c1758, Bertie Co, married Elizabeth(w1fe James Cherry #647) #1660, ccc2469 #17p11. James died Bef Feb 1826, Bertie Co, ccc1208 #17p11. James was on Bertie Co tax list 1774 (all males listed at least age 16); he was the only son of Solomon who was on that list. He was not on the Census of the United Staes in 1800. William Spivey, John Robbins, and William Hendrixon were the executors of James' Feb 3,1825 will (book F, page 92). His will said he had children, but did not name them. There was a James Cherry Jr in Bertie in 1790, Plus a James Cherry. The James Jr was at least 18 years old in 1790 or born by 1772. This could put him to be a son of James Sr who was born in 1758. Records state he has one known daughter Sarah Cherry. There was a unknown James Cherry of Bertie Co. NC who was listed 1820 & 1830 census. Born c1790's and his wife a few years younger. He lived close to Elizabeth Spivey and Mrs Elizabeth Cherry. James had four to six children born 1816-1826. Apparently James and his wife took care of younger brothers or sisters because in the 1820 census in James' house were a boy born between 1802 and 1804; he was still there in 1830. Also in 1820 there was a girl born between 1805 and 1810 but was not there in 1830. The James Cherry jr (unknown) was in the war of 1812 (in 1814), in the detached Millita, 1st Regiment. James jr was also in the 1820 Bertie Co. NC Census, age 26 and 44. Therefore he was born between 1776 & 1794. Reported married. This James Cherry jr could have been the son of James Cherry [3099] in Martin Co that moved to Bertie in 1790 and was the son of Faithful Cherry Jr [360]. However this James Jr was born 1768 eight years difference in census report of 1820. Children: i Sarah Cherry #1661 ccc2470 #17p11. 6. After 1st wife died there were five additional issues from his 2nd marriage to Sarah Eley. Many of these descendants I have traced and lived next door to them and did not know we were related. What a pleasant surprise. In Kelford I have found a relation with them through Solomon Cherry #801. The Curtis Butler, Nora Hall, Rupert and Page Hoggard and Janie Cherry Norfleet family. In Roxobel, Janie was the mother of Elizabeth and Tom. Also Russell Bazemore through Moore Rawls of Lewiston. Joseph Carlton Cherry Sr and Jr and his sister Louise Cherry also were our neighbors. Was the first wife of James Newsome who married the widow Sarah Louisa King in 1861. Sarah L.King married first Lewis W.Pruden in 1845. See chart #22 for information on Jenkin family. James: The "Eley" part of James Newsome name has not been proven. Married 1st Polly Early & had two children Leander and Joseph. James married 2nd Mary Jenkins & they had eight additional issues. James married 3rd the Widow Sarah Louise King Pruden, former wife of Lewis W Pruden. James (Eley) must have gotten the name "Eley" from a mix-up with grandson named James Eley Newson #15892 (he married his 1st cousin Blannie Liverman #15833 the daughter of Sarah Newsome # 13099). James (Eley) Newsome also had a son that was named Eley Newsome #13007 . He was the 1st child from his marrige to his 2nd marriage Mary Jenkins #1632. Mary was the daughter of Capt. Irving Jenkins #1831. Capt.Irving Jenkins married Elizabeth Cherry who was in turn was the daughter of Sarah Eley #641.She was the 2ndnd wife of Mr g.g.g.g.g grandfather (Pete #1 ) Solomon Cherry #801. Therefore, James (Eley) Newsomes' wife was the grandmother of his wife Mary Jenkins #1832. It is my belief that this is how the "Eley" name was added to this part of this Newsome family. There were additional childern from James Newsome and Mary Jenkin's marriage that carry the family name: Irving Newsome # 1834 probably named for Capt Irving Jenkins #1831 the father of Mary Jenkins #1832 and Sarah Newsome #13008 probably named for her grandmother Sarah Eley. Martha , Mary and Elizabeth are found in Cherry and Jenkins pedigrees. vi Charles Cherry Jenkins #1872 born 1818, Hertford Co. Sarah (unknown) was Solomons 1st wife & would have been over 50 years old if Martha was born c1758 to this union. Data found in John Freeman's book of Norfolk Co Va names Martha Cherry on page 107. Published by the Heritage Books, Inc. and dated 1994 it names Solomon Freeman as the 2nd husband of Martha Cherry. She married James Ward #10179 as her first husband. His will was dated 13 April 1780, proven Nov Ct 1780, recorded in Book B, pages 165--169 Bertie Co NC, mentions daughters Winne, Susanna and Penolope Clifton. Execs; William Cherry and Solomon Cherry ( brothers of Martha) witnesses: James Sowell, Jr, George Jornagan Hodum Jr, and Ekratin Jenkins . James Ward's death left Martha , at age 22, a widow with three children under the age of four and pregnant. In 1784, Martha at age 26 remarried and became the 2nd wife of Solomon Freeeman His first wife was a Ms Speight. There were five children from this union. Martha married c1784 Solomon Freeman who wrote his will in April 1788 and it was proven in May 1788. Stated that his three youngest children were Sarah, James and an unborn child (Martha #11722) His friend James Cherry (# 647 [1208] - brother to Martha) and James Wilson were named as his executors. WB D:90, Bertie Co NC. April 1788. Solomon Cherry (#648 [2472] also a brother of Martha) was named guardian to the orphans of Solomon Freeman: James, Sarah and Martha (the posthumous child). The children of Solomon Freeman via marriage with his first wife, a Ms Speight selected their grandfather Joseph Speight of Gates Co as their guardian after the death of their father Solomon Freeman. Grandfather Joseph Speight was then appointed the guardian for the three yougest: Anne, John, and David. Joseph Speight named Joseph, John, and Anne Freeman in his will which was probated in 1792. Martha was married after 1773, this was the date when her father named her in his will as Martha Cherry When Martha Cherry married in c17745/1776 to her 1st husband James Ward she would be c17 years of age. From Solomon Freeman's marriage to Ms Speighth their were five children. Joseph, Francis, Anna, John, and David Freeman. Martha after the death of her first husband James Ward she married Solomon Freeman around 1784. Her first child Sarah "Polly" Freeman from this marriage was born in c1785. From the information supplied in the Freeman book there is very supportive evidence that Martha Cherry #652 married as her 2nd husband Solomon Freeman #14010 [ ]. The Freeman information was sent to me by Jim F Hoggard, P.O. Box 605 Windsor, NC 27983 (919) 794-2333 on August 8,1997. I have sent Jim a copy of this information for his review and comments. Jim is a descendant of Sarah Freeman #14011 [ ] (h/o) of John Williford[] was the daughter of Solomon Freeman #14010 (h/o) Martha Cherry #652 [ 1206 ]). As of today I have not received Jim's pedigree.
