Records Author: Cathy Hart Farris The Following Event Chart is for Aaron ELLIS Husband of Catherine__BRYAN/ELLIS Started 27 Dec 2000 Updated as of today 23 August 2009 My research is on the William BRYAN line of VA/Bertie County, NC. Any additional names are included as a means to put the BRYAN(T) families together. This is extremely difficult since all the male cousins have the same first names and are about the same age as cousins, uncles and fathers. It has been difficult for all BRYAN(T) researchers for this reason. Many erroneous Publications have been printed and put out wrong lines and unproven information...and I took some of it to heart when I first began to research this line...so I have errors too...that I am trying to correct and get to the truth. If you as the reader of this know something that can promote this research please post or contact me...and Thank You. This outline is for Aaron ELLIS born ca 1720 - died 1769 in Bertie Co, N.C. He was 2nd husband of Catherine ______BRYANT/ELLIS ca. birth 1700 VA/NC dec'd 1779 in Bertie…6th ggrandmother of Cathy Hart FARRIS cathyfarris@att.net. This outline brought up to date as of23 August 2009. Any outline I have researched is for the one answer... The Answer/Question, Ken Lindsay and I have is "How did Michael BRYAN and wife Olive obtain the 100ac in Bertie that they sold in 1757 to Aaron ELLIS"? IF ANYONE KNOWS THE ANSWER PLEASE LET ME KNOW...Cathy Farris cathyfarris@att.net This is the deed and land description: 1757 H-408 To all People to whom these presents shall come Greeting to know ye that I Mical Bryan and Olive his wife of Bertie County within his Magesty's Province of North Carolina for and in consideration of the sum of eleven pounds current money of Virginia to me in hand paid before the ensealing here of well and truely paid by Aaron Elliss the reciept whereof. Test. Benj. Wynns Clerk Clr I do not know where Aaron ELLIS was born, from records I believe Virginia or North Carolina. I have not found records for him until abt. 1740 in Bertie. From 1740 on he is fairly easy to find records for and seems to be a respectable man of Society Parish. He is recorded in different type of records, such as court cases, as a jurist or involved in the court system, improving roads, buying land, starting a Grist Mill, owning a Manor Plantation and a as a witness for others in misc. records. He is found on many court records with Catherine BRYAN and related names. When William BRYAN died 1744 it is evident from the various land records I can find that mention the name Aaron ELLIS, that Aaron was always at or very near by the property that William, Catherine and their 7 children lived on. And nearby Capt. Needham BRYAN's property. From some other records I have read, the name ELLIS will follow down from VA into NC right along with the rest of our group. ELLIS was also found in Chowan, Hertford, and Northampton. However, the ELLIS name seems to be sparsely scattered in Bertie. No marriages or later families (1775) with the name ELLIS, except for Cealy ELLIS, daughter of Moses, his brother. It seems most of the ELLIS names that are in the neighborhood are biblical names, Aaron, Moses, Jeremiah and others I don't remember right now. There is a Robert ELLIS that seems to have been a land owner in this area and left a will. I will be adding other ELLIS names for this record to be able to compare all record findings, to see how they associated with the BRYAN family. Meaning neighbors, called name places, and various other entries...hoping there may be a lead into how Aaron ELLIS met and married Catherine ____BRYANT ELLIS, after the death of William BRYANT in 1744. Just from guessing, I would say Aaron ELLIS worked for William BRYANT or even Needham BRYANT on the manor plantation of Flagg Run and adj Rocquist. There are plenty of deeds and court records that can support relationship of early ELLIS and other families that are associated with the BRYAN(T)S. It does not appear that Aaron was previously married, as his will did not mention any of his own heirs. It did mention Cely ELLIS, daughter of his brother Moses*: 1771 960 Court Shadrick WELKINS appeared in open court and deposed upon the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God that Selia ELLIS is the reputed daughter of Moses ELLIS of Chowan County dec'd and that the said *Moses ELLIS and AARON ELLIS of Bertie Co were generally reputed to be and declared themselves to be brothers. Noah HINTON James MOORE James GARDNER NOTE: The mention of the name Lemuel RIDDICK taken from the people that were paid money from the estate of Aaron ELLIS was surprising. Lemuel RIDDICK did not reside in Bertie. He was a vestryman from Nansemond Co. VA. I am inserting various records on RIDDICK in hopes of finding out why Aaron ELLIS would need to pay him money. _______ Lemuel REDDICK can be found in Records of Estates Bertie Co., NC 1734-1788” Volume II Loose Estate Papers, David B. GAMMON mentioned in the entry of the Estate of Aaron ELLIS, above. He may be found in other surrounding county records. Lemuel RIDDICK was burgess from Nansemond Co., VA and undoubtedly the vestryman of the Upper Parish. this information was found in: “The Vestry Book of The Upper Parish of Nansemond Co. VA 1743-1793” Wilmer HILL, 1949. Clearfield Press, Baltimore MD 1999 From this book I have learned the following facts that may explain why Aaron ELLIS paid money to RIDDICK. There is no entry directly stating a reason, only a glimpse of who RIDDICK is and what vestrymen did. There is much written in this book that explains how Nansemond was formed and parishes were created where my BRYAN people were. The parishes lines changes from time to time because the population movement affected the money coming in from tithes and taxes, and other religions coming into the area. If the number of people in the parish did not equal the amount of the needed Tithables then a new boundary line would be made. These boundaries are explained in the book. In general, vestries were self-perpetuating. The vestries were the depositaries of power in Virginia. They not only governed the Church by the election of ministers, the levying of taxes, the enforcing of laws, but they made the laws int he House of Burgesses. For the burgesses were the most intelligent and influential men of the parish and were prominent men. The vestry made up the parish budget, and levied and apportioned the taxes for parish expenses, employed ministers and other church officers, built and repaired churches and chapels, took care of the poor, of orphan and illegitimate children, education of pauper children, kept records of births, marriages and deaths, presented offenders and collected fines for offenses against morality and church discipline, appointed persons to establish and maintain the boundary lines of owners of land, known as PROCESSIONING, and kept a record of their reports, and exercised other powers necessary for the management of parochial affairs. PROCESSIONING was a very important duty of the vestry of each parish. This was the method of determining the bounds of every person’s land for the record of land titles. Every 4th year, upon the order of the county court, the vestry, having divided its parish into precincts of convenient size, appointed (do not have the next page xxii, will get a copy and finish this sentence...cathy) Prominent families who were numerously represented on the vestry were the NORFLEETS, BAKERS, SUMNERS and most of all the RIDDICKS. Lemuel RIDDICK represented Nansemond Co for many years in the House of Burgesses. He was undoubtedly the vestryman of the Upper Parish. Tobacco was used as payment to the ministers. Upper Parish produced better tobacco and made more profit, so the ministers were paid better there. There are record entries from the years 1748-1775 that mention Lemuel RIDDICK in official duties, where he would take action for the welfare of the parishes. David MEADE is also mentioned in 1767 as a vestryman and was appointed as an attorney. David MEADE was mentioned in as a Absentee Landlord that lived in Nansemond when Aaron ELLIS asked permission from him to build a ferry. Another entry for David MEADE mentioned that on October 14, 1748,the vestry declared “that a handsome brick Church ought to be Built in the Parish”, and appointed the Reverend William WEBB, minister, David MEADE, Jethro SUMNER, Daniel PUGH, and Josiah RIDDICK vestrymen (of whom any three could act) as directors for carrying out the undertaking. Vestries were charged by law with the care of the poor. Many times vagrant poor became charges of the parishes. I remember reading in Nugents “Cavaliers and Pioneers” about William CADOWGAN as being next door to the BRYANT and KING land. This books says, William CADOWGAN of the Upper Parish had by his will dated 1 Jan 1675 devised certain properties for the benefit of the parish and benefit of the poor and other charitable uses until the time when a relation should appear in Virginia and claim this property. No one ever made a claim so the Churchwardens of the parish sold his lands so they could apply the monies raised. (this was probably done quite a bit and probably with my ancestors land too and that may be why it is difficult to find records...cathy) On Nov 22 1769 some resolutions were being considered regarding people in the poor house. This was in Virginia, but it was also the time Aaron ELLIS was about to be deceased as well. Could David have had business or anything to do with this being in Bertie at the time of his death? They were still in the process of selling land of CADOWGAN. An entry made 13 Sep 1755 in Nansemond shows a Vestry held and appointed Jesse REDDICK,and John LAWRENCE to Procession all the land marks between South Key Roand and Sumerton Creek Road from the Reedy Branch to the Carroliner Line. There are many entries, one of interest ...A line between David MEADE and John PENDAR, A line Between William BRYANT and John PENDAR. In records made above, the name Paul PENDER can be found with a name of ELLIS. These names sure carry on throughout the land lines, church records and other records. It seems the only way to figure out in between the lines is to find records for the same names in other states or counties and try to piece them together...cathy At a Vestry held in the Court House for the Upper Parish of Nansemond Munday the 16 May 1757, present: The Reverend Wm WEBB Minister David MEADE, Wm BAKER Church Wardens Lemuel REDDICK Hening TEMBTEY Mils REDDICK Josiah REDDICK Willis REDDICK Wm HUNTER and Jacob SUMNER Gent of the Vestry Wm BAKER Gent rendered in an account of a fine Rec’d of Mary COUPLAND for a Bastard Child Hening TEMBTEY for a fine rec’d of Mary MILES By Africe HEDGBETH Wm BAKER for part of Keturah HOLANS fine and others By David MEADE for Mary OSBOURNS fine To Sarah ELIS To Widdow HOGARD To Thomas JONES.......a Thomas JONES was an attorney for Aaron ELLIS To Widdow CHAPPELL To Sarah HEDGPETH To Widow WATKINS There are a couple more entries I am going to enter here. It appears they are names on the poor people records for the parish. For the date 28 Dec ‘78 A vestry held Suffolk Christian SPIVEY sextoness Cypres Chapel Wm PUGH for fixing a bell to the church Doctor COHOON for medicines for the poor JOSEPH SKEATOE a poor man Sarah ELLIS a poor woman In the estate of Aaron ELLIS Morning SKEETO is mentioned as being his sister. I do not know what the relationship is of the above... it is interesting. There is no direct idea of why Aaron owed money to Lemuel REDDICK. There are a couple of deeds that show Aaron ELLIS selling or giving land to John MORRIS who was called the Father of Bertie Chappel. I do not know if this is connected...but suspect it must be. Aaron ELLIS gave land to a 3-4 year old...I can’t understand this record...why would he do that? Just speculation on my part. But it seems to me Aaron may have made payment for the poor SKEETO names on the list. And was somehow involved with the Society Parish vestry. Remember he was a processioner, the master processioner in Bertie.
