He married Ms Lacye(Wife: William Rawles #15674), c1708, in England, b. c1580, England. William died aft 1610, England. Ms: Named as husband of William Rawles (#15674) in publication of VA Historical Socisty Publication. Her father was William Lacye, Esp. of England. I. George Rawles Sr, 9th g.grandfather, b. c1615, England. He married unknown (Wife:George Rawles #13700).. George died aft 1655, Nansemond Co VA. George Rawles was my (Pete #1) 9th Great Grandfather. This George Sr #13700 was the first known of my Rawles family to come to America. Robert Bennett received 700.5 acres one-half miles up creek near mouth of Nansemond River 6-26-1635 as found in page 188 for transporting 14 person to America through the port at Norfolk; They were named James Leonard, Peter Rice, Elizabeth Gilbert, GEORGE RAWLES, Robert Raby, Richard Hayes, Phillip Pharrin, George Ratheram, Jons Ford, John Lee, Ann Busby, Richard Smith, Edward Mayo, Elizabeth Busby, On 6- 26-1635 page 188 George Rawls was with Richard Bennett of Nansemond River. Also called Bennett Creek. I have several hundred Rawles (Rawls) people of Va and NC on file (recorded by county) that I have not been able to identify at this time. They probable are descendants or kin to this George Rawles Sr #13700 that immigrated to America through the port in Norfolk. The spelling of this name is recorded in several variations: Rawls. Rawles, Rauls, Ralls, etc. Maybe some day they can be identified and connected. Some of my (Pete #1) information was from Henry W Rawls, 7 Bradley Dr., Montgomery, Al 36109. Phone (205) 272-1570. His files have over 20,00 Rawles names. In addition to a spreadsheets on each of the Rawls families he has a booklet called "Rawls of NC 1884" of which I have a copy on file. A. Lt. Col. George Rawles, 8th GGF, b. 1610, Fifehead Neville Co.,Dorset, England. He married unknown (Wife:Lt.Col.Go.Rawles #13695, b. c1619, England or Isle of Wight, VA, d. c1660-1700, Nanemond Co VA. Lt. died aft 1675, Knuckles Creek, Nansemand Co VA. George Rawls owned seven miles of land on both sides of Knuckles Swamp that he willed to his son Major George Rawles Jr. This property was on the line dividing NC and VA. Lt. Col George Rawles was my (Pete #1) 8th great grandfather. He later reported to have been promoted to the rank of Major General in the Kings Army. George Rawles came to Nansemond Co., Virginia as a military adviser to Robert Bennett c1835. In Vol. 13, p. 6 dated 26 June 1635 shows that George Rawles was to be transported up the Nansemond River with 14 persons other person. In 1635 Robert Bennett is shown as owning 700 acres of land about 1 1/2 miles up a creek near the mouth of Nansemond River beginning at a pine tree marked with the letters of his name and bordering land marked by Robert Newnan. In 17th Century Isle of Wight Co VA, by Bodie, names George Rawles Teste: 25 June, 25th year of King Charles, 200 acres of land being part of a divide of 1,100 acres patented to me under Gov. Wyatt, to which is added 50 acres belonging to Hopkins Howell, said patent dated 23 Jun 1641 lying between Henry Freestone and Hopkins Howell. Other Teste were Robert Price and Hopkins Howell. Ref: The VA Magazine of History and Biography, Published quarterly by the VA Society, Richmond VA. 20 June 1655: George Rawls test on deed of William Underwood of Virginia. Lt Col George Rawles was a member of the Royal Army that was stationed in the "Virginias". He came to the colony as an escort and remained there to marry. Later he bought property on a creek off of the Nansemond River where he settled and raised his family. His descendants later migrated to what is now Bertie Co. This is where Jonas Rawls, my g.g.g.grandfather, owned property which was near Rhodes Place Crossroad and where he is buried in the Rawls Cemetery. The cemetery is near the location of the present Bertie County Central High School. In the 1930's the county had eight high schools to serve the various communities: Roxobel-Kelford (the school where I attended and graduated from in 1942). Lewiston-Woodville, Aulander, Powellsville, Mars Hill, Colerain, Merry Hill and Windsor. Now all of the high school students attend the one and only consolidated program at Central Bertie High School that was opened around 1952. It was here in this same neighborhood that several generations of my ancestors were born: Rawls, Peele, Austin, Young. Moore, Bazemore etc. 1. Major George Rawles Jr 7th g.grandfather, b. c1650. He married Unknown(Wife:Major George Rawles #13002). Major died aft 1696, Nansemond Co VA. Major Rawles inhetited from his father Lt. Col, George Rawls seven miles on both sides of Knuckles Swamp. His son, William later added more land to this estate. Maj. George Rawls was my (Pete #1) 7th great.grandfather. a. William Rawls Sr, 6th g.grandfather, b. c1680, Nansmond Co VA. He married Dianah (Wife:William Rawls #622), b. c1680, d. bet. 1720- 40, Nansemond Co VA. William died 1758/9, Halifax- Edge.Co via. Bertie Prec. William Rawls #622 Dianah #623 are my "Pete"(#1) 6th great grand parents. Records show that William #622 was the son of Major George Rawles of VA. Data in Colonial State papers Vol.58 Folio 84 P.R E. in London by William W Webb and reported in Nansemond Chronicler 1606-1800, Virginia Colony 929.3 VA-89 C 889 that a William Rawles was the son of Maj.George Rawles who had inherited from his father Lt.Col.George Rawles Sr seven miles of land on both sides of Knuckles swamp. This land straddled the NC and VA line and that William Rawles (spelling now Rawls) added more land to this holding after receiving his inheritance.. Patent Index - Nansemond Co VA 1695- 1727, Book #10, p. 318 Dated 1 April 1717. To William Ralles for 404 acres of land on the western side of land patented to William Cadagan for 800 acres in 1670. Ref:The Vestry Book of Upper Parish Nansemond Co VA 1743-1793 (30) 18 Feb 1747/48 gave a return on the bounds of William Rawls Jr line adjoining John Hare and William Rawls (Sr) In Vestry Book (41) dated 31 Aug 1747, James Copeland and John Porter were order to posses on the bounds beginning at John Porter's land joining Summerton Swamp on the north side of Summerton Road to the Knuckles Swamp. A line was established between John Porter and Thomas Rawles. A line between Wm Rawls Senr and William Rawles son of John (Rawles). A line between Wm Rawls son of John & John Hare in the presence of them. In Vestry Book (57) John Hare and Wm Rawls are order to go around their bounds and renew the landmarks. Return to the vestry an account of every mans land you procession, beginning at John Porters joyning Summerton Swamp on the north side of Summerton Road to the Knuckle Swamp; including all land in this said Bounds. Giving names of the persons present at the same. An account with the particular reason of such failure, and if refused to have their land processioned you Shall Certify the name to the church within ten days from under your hands. Signed by William Webb and truly entered by Rich'd Webb Clk Vestry. Ref: Vestry Book (116 dated 13th September 1755; in compliance to an order of Vestry we the Subscribers have processioned all the bounds of land according to order beginning at a line between widow Parker and John Faulk, Adam Harrell and we being present and a line between John Hare and Wm (William) Rawls in present of John Hare and us and John Faulk and a line between Wm Rawls and Frances Rawls (probably the wife of Wm Rawls) in the presence of us and John Hare and John Faulk & a line between John Harrrell and Wm Rawls in the presence of us and John Harrell and a line between the widow Rawls and James Copeland in the presence of us and a line between the widow Rawls and John Porter in the presence of us and a line of John Porter in presence of us, signed by James Copeland and John Porter. From the above data we find that there was a William Rawles Sr, William Rawles Jr and a William Rawles the son of John Rawls living next to each other on Knuckle Swamp. Nansemond Co VA 31 Aug 1747.. We also have a Thomas Rawles, Frances Rawles (probably wife of William Rawls Sr.) and a widow Rawles living on adjoining property as recorded in Vestry records.. From this data one could assume that William, wife Frances and son William Rawles Jr plus the widow [John] Rawles and her son John Rawles lived in the same neighborhood along with Thomas Rawles of which there is no record regarding his kin. John Porter land adjoined Thomas's land and the Widow Rawles. from this information one could assume he was a child of the widow who in turn was the former wife of John Rawles now deceased. (1) John Rawls I, 5th great grandfather, b. c1710, Mansemond Co VA. He married Unknown (Wife:John Rawls #624), b. c1718. John died c1759. John Rawls #624 and wife #626 are my ("Pete" #1) 5th great grand parents. In Nansemond Chronicler 1606- 1800, Virginia Colony the following information: 1744 Col Andrew Meade was a leader in building a church in Upper Parrish. Trustee of Meade's Chapel was Edward Norfleet. They bought of Jethro Summers land on which to build a handsome brick church. Bishop Meade was instrumental in building a chapel on the land of John Rawles and his sister, Children of William Rawles. They donated the land for the Holy Neck Chapel, a site that at one time was used by the Indians for their Ceremonial Rituals. For many years the church was used to record land ownership. Records were kept here for review whenever a disagreement occurred between the Parish members or when a Parish member sold or sub-divided their property and new boundaries needed to be established. Also Parish members were taxed according to the amount of property they owned as shown in the records. Vestry Book page 240 recorded John and William Rawls in 1751 had their property line proven. In earlier time to travel from Nansemond Co (Suffolk) to the Albemarle Sound, Chowan River and the Merherrian River you had to come by water on a sailboat by way of the Atlantic Ocean or by horse back. There were trails but the large sounds and rivers presented a natural boundary and handicapped the movement of carriage or wagon. In 1740 on Edward Copeland's land on the Upper Chowan River near the beginning of the Merherrian River at the little port town of Winton they established a ferry. The ferry was owned and operated by Major Theophilus Pugh a member of a prominent family in Eastern NC who married into the Col Hill, Whitmel, Norfleet, Griffin and Urquhart families. This ferry was later bought by John Cotton who named it Cotton's Ferry. The first Post Road between Suffolk and Edenton was established c1758. This trail traveled through Somerton and Salem in Va, and to Pipkin's Inn to what is now Edenton. From here you had to go by boat across the Albemarle Sound to the Mackay's Ferry Landing and travel southward where it ended at Newbern, NC. The construction of this project was under Col.Richards Lee's direction. Many of the above named families plus others are found in Hertford, Gates, Bertie, Martin, Halifax, Tyrrell, and Edgecombe Counties. Relatives that move there were Pippen, Rawls (Rawlles, Rawles, Ralls, Rales) Norfleet, Lee, Hill, Cotton, Pugh, Copeland, Cherry, Matthews, Lyon, Peele, Young, Everitt, Austin, Knight, Cofield, Rhodes, Smith, Dozier, Dickens, Moore, Lynch, Best and Jones plus many others. People began settling this area as it became safer from Indian attacks. It was for this protection of their English Settlers that Lt Col George Rawls my (Pete #1) 4th great grandfather was sent to "The New World" in 1635. It is from this branch of Rawls from whom my ancestors descended. In the Vestry Book of upper Parish Nansemond Co VA in compliance to an order of The Vestry dated 13th September 1755 (#116) William Rawls, Frances Rawls and Widow Rawls had their property lines proven. The adjoining land was owned by John Hare, John Fauk, John Porter, John Porter Jr and James Couplan. Vestry Book (#127) dated September 13th 1755 shows procesion of the property bounds of John Hare and Hardy Rawls prst (present) Win Rawls, line between Jas Couplan & John Rawls prest. A line between John Rawls & John Hare present James Couplan. A line between John Rawls and Thomas Jones prst (My Jones ancestors came from Nansemond Co VA?). A line between James Rawls & Mary Parker present Abraham Jones. A line between James Rawls land Jacob Jones prst. All the above said bounds of land peaceable & quietly processioned and no objection made by us: signed by James Rawls and Arthur Jones. The Vestry Book of upper Nansemond Co VA (#138) held in Suffolk Town Sept the 17th 1759 (#157) for the upper Parish of Nansemond County: Ordered that William Rawls and John Harrell All the Land in Bounds No.9 According to Law. Ordered that Hardy Rawls and Edward Harrell Procession all the Land in Bounds No 12 According to Law. In Jan 29 1760 William Rawls properly lines were Proven as those joining Lemuel Riddick, Wimp Cross, John Purvis and Wm Rogers in Vestry Book (#143). The Vestry on March 8th 1764 bounds on Thomas Rawls and John Porter, line between Wimp Rawls and John Harrell, line between John Hare and Wim Rawls, line between Frances Rawles and Wim Rawls. On Dec 30,1767 (#198) process all bounds of land of William Rawls and John Purvis No. 18. Land bounds of Solomon Rawls & Jacob Duke The following Rawls names were identified in the above Vestry Orders: William, Frances, Widow Rawls, Hardy, John, James, Thomas and Solomon. The above Vestry Records cover a period 1755 to 1767. All of the above Rawls' were living in Upper Nansemond Co VA during that time as proven by Parish Records as given here. (a) William Rawls,II 4th GGF, b. c1735. He married Rebecca (Wife:William Rawls #209), b. c1735. William died 1772, Bertie,Co. N.C. William Rawls II #209 was my ("Pete" #1) 4th great grandfather, a common descendant of William Rawls #622. See abstracts of NC Will, Old Bertie Co. 1777- 929.3. Also see NC History & Gen. Register by Hathaway 929.3. William Rawls 14 Apr 1772 Sept Ct. 1772 sons Levi, Josiah (Joshua), Joab, Jonas & Hosea, Dau. Druscilla, Wife Rebecca & bro. Phillip Rawls were named in his will. Exrs.Test. Sam Dunning and John Cook. William Rawls lived northeast of Aulander (Harman's Crossroad) in the nearby section between Bertie and Hertford County. It was in an area identified by Jack and Marilyn as Fort Branch. It is a triangle of land between Dogwood Pocosin, Powell's Pocosin, Horse Pen Branch and Coneristy (Connaritsa) Pocosin. "Fort branch, per Jack and Marilyn is identified as the area described as "head of Cashia and Dogwood Pocason/Marsh/Neck". "Above Aulander there are a couple of branches or legs of Fort Branch which join together to form a triangle of land with the tip of the triangle crossing over into present day Hertford". "It is the triangle of land between these two legs which appears to be Dogwood Neck or Pocoson or Marsh". "The area is small and some of the names I found on deeds through the years are, Epaphroditus Moore, John Moore, William Willson, Jones Griffin, Cader Powell, Samuel Dunning, Henry Dawson, William Rawls, Levy Rawls, Joshua Rawls, Rebecca Rawls, Elisha Moore Wilson, Thomas Moore, Stephen McDaniell, Jesse Conner, Joshua White, Wilie Dunning, John Dunning, Abner Perry". "The records found to date, span the years from the 1730s to the 1850s". "Several of the deeds describe land which is on Dogwood Pocoson as well as Powell's Pocoson, Horse Pen Branch or Pocoson and Coneristy (Connaritsa) Pocosin". I have a copy of an old map of Bertie Co where it shows Connaritsa Swamp, which is a extended northern branch of Cashie Swamp, passing only a few mile to the west of town as it continues northwest just past Harman's Crossroads (Aulander) and ends there. I have another map (Author Unknown) that gives three branches of Stony Creek originating in Bertie and terminating in Hertford County where it joins up with the Ahosky Swamp. This Swamp later becomes Wiccacon Creek. The name of the three waterways that comprise and form Stony Creek are the Quioccosion Swamp that originates upstream about a mile or so inside Bertie Co. This swamp drains all the area in the eastern section that is about three mile north of Aulander and concluded just to the east of the town. As you continue upstream in a southwest direction from Hertford County the next branch of water was called Beaverdam Swamp. This Swamp runs about three miles south and parallel to the Hertford-Bertie County boarders. Continuing from the junction of Stony and Beaverdam Swamps that heads to the southwest was a waterway called Loosing Swamp. This swamp was about four mile long and later terminated a few miles or so from the headwater of Connaritsa Swamp. Connaritsa Swamp was the drainage plane that originated about three miles east of Aulander and later empted into the Cashie Swamp after flowing into the Cashie River about 25 miles away near Windsor NC. Another branch of the Cashie Swamp was the Wattom Swamp that was positioned between the Cashie and Connaritsa Swamps. The Cashie River continues past Windsor for about fifteen miles before it terminates when it enters into the Albemarle Sound. Off of the swamps named above was probably where Fort Branch, Dogwood Neck, Powell's, Horse Pen and Coneristy Pocosin and/or Marsh were located. .Rebecca: In the 1800 Bertie Census there was a Rebecca Rawls that was living alone. Also listed in this same census was her sons Jonas, Josiah and Levi. All four are together in this census so they more than likely lived near each other and registered at the same time, They are listed as head of a household. [1] Jonas Rawls g.g.g.grandfather, b. 1760, Bertie Co NC. He married (1) Winnefred Cooke, 8-20-1787. Buried Rawls cemetery near Rhodes Place and old Peele School location. Jonas owned land adjoining William Moore in the Mulberry Grove section of Bertie Co. Jonas married 1st Winnifred Cooke on 8-20-1787. Jonas' second marriage 12-23- 1801 to Sally Moore from this union only one issue Moore Rawls 2nd GGF is known. Sally's father was Thomas Moore who probably was a neighbor of Jonas Rawls. Sarah: Sarah's father was Thomas Moore #654 the grandfather of Moore Rawls #203. [A] Moore Rawls* g.g.grandfather, b. 01-26- 1811, Rhodes Place Crossroad, Bertie Co NC. He married (1) Mary Arabella Smith* g.g.gandmother, 11- 01-1838, b. 03-28-1810, (daughter of Ebenezer Smith* g.g.g.grandfather and Elizabeth* (Wife:Ebenezer Smith #231)*) d. 09-06-1854. He married (2) Judith Frances (Fannie) Garrett, 11-20-1856, b. 04-10-1832, (daughter of Edmund Garrett and Lenny(ia) M Peele) d. 11-26-1915, St Frances Cem. Woodville NC. Moore died 09-16-1879, Woodville, NC. Moore Rawls joined St. Francis Methodist-Episcopal Church, South, 06- 11-1851. He was the overseer for the Thompson Plantation. Have excerpt from his diary as supplied by Jesse Bazemore Parker. Moore Rawls was my ("Pete" Austin #1) 3rd Great Grandfather a descendant of William Rawls Sr. #622. Note: The Thompson Children's home in Charlotte was started with a single gift in memory of Lewis F Thompson. Described as a man of correct taste, of thorough sense of propriety, of ripe judgment and great energy of character. He was an influential, highly respected figure in his region. When he was 59, tragedy struck Lewis Thompson's family. His eighteen-year-old daughter Pattie died and one month later a deeply grieved Mr. Thompson died, too. In memory of her husband and daughter his wife Margaret Ann Capehart Clark Thompson gave the St. Peters Church through Rev. Benjamin Bronson: Rector, what has been described as a considerable sum of money. This gift led to the establishment of Thompson Orphanage. It was a haven for the multitude of post war orphans in 1886. Today Thompson Children's home is a modern residential treatment facility for emotionally disturbed children. It also provides group home care and counseling service across NC and has served literally thousand of children. My g.g. Grandfather Moore Rawls was the overseer for Lewis F Thompson #12085 plantation before and after slavery. Lewis Whitmel Thompson Jr #14594 was a personal friend and the grandson of Lewis F. Thompson #12085. Lewis Jr and his wife Betsy Murray lived with his Uncle William "Billy" Clark Thompson #14567 in the family home just at the edge of Woodville. When he died he gave all his belongings to what he thought was the "next of Kin".Thinking that it was his nephew Lewis Whitmel Thompson Jr. When in fact it would include the family of his 1st cousin Sallie Eaton Norfleet. Big family debate that resulted with the court ruling in favor of a share belonged to Sally Norfleet family. It was a sizeable estate with lots of farm property that consisted of the river plantations that dated back to land grants from the King of England. Lewis' wife Betsy Murry was from Windsor, NC. She died about 1960 of a fatal stoke just after going to bed. Lewis Jr spoke to her but got no answer and then found she had passed away. Betsy was one of my father's favorite people and mine. He and Lewis Jr. were close friends that fished and hunted together a great deal of the time. It was at one of Lewis' farms that I once shot at a running deer but when I went over to investigate I found two lying there. I never saw the other deer. Only fired at it one time! It was on his farm that I witnessed the largest buck deer that I have ever seen in the wild. He could have been a ten or twelve pointer or larger that passed just out-of-range of my stand in a broom straw field. It just loped across the field and paid no attention to my out-of-the-range buckshot that I fired at him. A twelve pointer ran out in front of a car and was killed a weeks later near this place. Now! They should believe my big BUCK story. Written in the papers of Dr Charles Smallwood "Recollections of Woodville" dated from 1830 to 1899 (papers were sent to me by Margaret "Molly" Urquhart) he names many of my ancestors. Silas Smith #236 (h/o Celia) lived on the road (now Jack Branch Road) that connected from Woodville to Windsor. A distant cousin on mine lived nearby.was the lovely home of Colonel Jesse Averitt who lived just beyond the crossroads of Jack Branch Road and on the road that led to Kelford. HENRY AVERITT---Henry Averitt was (Pete #1) my g.g.g.g.g. Grandfather and related to the Colonel. Moore Rawls #203 married first Mary Arabella Smith (grand daughter of Silas Smith) who had a daughter Elizabeth Watson Rawls #43 that married my great grandfather James W Peele #92. His grandfather on his wife's side John Young #217 married Martha Averitt #218. Additional data found in Bertie Co in the Will Book E page 439 dated 1845. Martha's father was Henry Averitt Jr #223 (h/o) Millie. Henry Averitt who was probably a brother or cousin of Col. Jesse Averitt. Also named in Smallwood's Journal was Abram Smith #238 the uncle of my g.g.gramdfather Moore Rawls' and wife Mary Arabella Smith. Her father was Ebenezer Smith #231 born 1783 and died in 1846 (h/o) Elizabeth of Woodville, Bertie Co NC. In the Smallwood record on page #6 of this typed journal is recorded data that needs some clarification. ABRAM SMITH---"Mr Abram Smith lived near Mrs Watson. There was quite a large family of children. Eliza married Rob Powell; they moved to Mississippi. William married Miss Goodman of Virginia, lived at the old Smith place a few years and move near Suffolk VA. He and his wife are dead, leaving several children. Priscilla married W.R.Savage, moved near Roxobel. lived there a few years and went to Miss - both living when last heard from. David went to Miss and died there. John read medicine and died in VA. Robert went to Mississippi and read law. I (Doctor said) think that there was another daughter but have forgotten her name; think it was Celia. The family broke up from the old homestead many years ago and moved to Mississippi. Whit Pugh [son of William Whitmel Hill Pugh, who moved his family to Louisiana in 1819] returned from Louisiana about 1860, bought the place (Abram Smith house) and died there in 1867. Dr Bernard, after his death, bought it, lived there a few years and moved to Battleboro. After his death the house was rented by Negroes and finally burned". Question, are the above children those of Abram Smith or Mr Watson? " This place was near Mr Watson and the house was occupied by Hezekiah Thompson who died their [in 1836], then by his brother Lewis Thompson until he built in Woodville (~1840 where Mr Burgess Urquhart now lives (in 1895)). Near this place Dennis Linton and his sister Old Miss Rachel lived. Old Dennis had a daughter Edna who married Marcey Bishop of Halifax Co. She died leaving one son who died during the Civil War. Old Dennis moved west in his early years. There his wife left him and he returned to NC bringing his daughter an infant. He had another sister Miss Sallie; both of them died at Mrs Jenkins in the Indian Woods. Old Dennis was sometimes given of the marvelous. Mr Robert Watson, Abram Smith [my Pete Austin #1 g.g.g.uncle] and Dennis went Possum hunting; they only caught one possum and Mr Watson proposed that the one that told the biggest lie should have the possum. All agreed to it and Mr Watson commenced first. Mr Smith next, and Dennis last. I do not remember what Mr Watson or Smith told but old Dennis said that on the way to the west he heard one day, as he traveled along, quite a noise in the woods among the bushes and they examined it closely to see the cause. He discovered a log rolling about, it being toO crooked to lie still. On his return from the west...he looked for the log and it was still rolling around. Mr Watson and Smith both agreed that Dennis was entitled to the possum. He hauled fish in the spring of the year to Woodville from the sound, and there he learned that Mr Sutton had dunked one of his neighbors for some offense in the sound. Meeting him one day in the road, old Dennis raised his head to say 'Good Morning' expecting him to say 'good morning' in return, but what should he say but boo', and relating it said 'I said boo, and damn you into the middle of Edenton Sound". Dr Smallwood REPORTED "that the old store of Watson and Grimes stood just below the Old Tavern just where the road leaves the main road; this road crossed Lewark Swamp, passed by the dwelling where Mr Watson lived to Flag Run on the Roanoke. Mr Abram Smith (My Pete #1 g.g.g.uncle) and Hezekiah Thompson lived on this road. The country people would meet at this store on Saturday, drink apple brandy, get drunk and on occasional fight. The Doctor said "I have seen many a fight their. Old Ned Williams, a soldier of the Revolutionary War died there sitting on the steps. I think a man named Wimberly was also stabbed in a fight there and died before he could be carried away to see a doctor. Elections and musters were held there. After Mr Watson died, Jack Grimes and James Lee were the merchants (I may be mistaken about this for my father and Lewis Thompson did business there around that time) - in fact it was the time before Grimes and Lee. Mr Grimes moved to TN and was killed there. James Lee and Dr H.F.Williams were merchants after them; then James Lee and Edward Watson. Ned and Robert Watson then built in front of the Old Tavern.where McRae now lives and did business there. Dr Watson moved to Texas and Ned went out of business" Dr Charles Smallwood tells of " the family of Colonel Jessie Averitt [ connected to my g.g.g.grandmother Martha Averitt (d/o) Henry Averitt Jr. ] family consisted of himself [Colonel], wife, and six children, and a miss Spain, I think. Miss Mary Eliza who was not married when I heard from her last, and I do not know if she is still living. Sally married Jacob Parker, and died in Murfreesboro about 1857, and was buried in old Averitt Graveyard near the place Alfred Spivey now lives. Lousia was married. Henry married a lady in Petersburg, VA and is dead, and the other son, I have not heard from. Colonel Averitt sold his place many years ago, which was bought by Joseph James Pugh; he Averitt moved to Florida. My father [John Smaw Smallwood) moved to the Silas Smith place (Silas was my Pete Austin #1 g.g.g.g.grandfather) in 1831 or 1832 for the purpose of sending his children to the Academy. My brother was born there". Dr Smallwood gave information that Saint Frances Church was build by Thomas Bragg, father of General Bragg and Governor Bragg with the money coming from Mrs Frances Pugh wife of William Oilstone Pugh. I found numerous transactions in the Carolina Room in the Mecklenburg County Library regarding Moore Rawls. In the micro film Estate Section I located and identified where Moore Rawls was the Grantor to:[1] Hardy Hayes, [2] John Dunning, [3] Harvey J White, [4] James L Burden, [5] Augustine Powell Admrx, [6] J.P.Johnson, [7] Joseph P Bazemore, [8] my 3rd cousin thrice remove Joseph William Cherry #613 [father-in-law on Moore ] to his son Robert Watson Rawls #589 (h/o) Lena Rivers Cherry #590] my (Pete #1) 4th cousin twice removed on my mother's side, [9] Dr.Charles Smallwood, [10]Joseph S Parker [ Moore's son-in-law through his 2nd wife Mary Watson Rawls #205], [11] Sabry Askew & Son, [12] Bettie W Peele,1st wife of Moore Rawls and my g.g.grandmother [13] William Walton the husband of Celia Cherry #1819 granddaughter of my (Pete #1) g.g.g.g grandfather Solomon Cherry #801 [on my mothers side] as the Grantee. From the above estate transactions Moore Rawls was involved in at least 13 pieces of property in Bertie County. He also was educated enough to write, as found in his daily journal during his position as overseer for Louis Thompson. There is a Rawls Cemetery according to records in Bertie Co Courthouse, which gives that Moore Rawls' daughter Elizabeth Watson Rawls #93 was buried in this place. Mary: Mary Arabella Smith #204 was my ("Pete" #1) g.g. Grandmother. Mother of Mary Debra Arabella Peele #39 that Married Jacob Lafayette Austin #38 and was her namesake. She died at 44 years of age. Was called "Betty". Lived in Woodville on the road leading to Kelford. On the left, beyond Nora Hinton house which later occupied by John B Griffin c1849 and then W.C.Thompson in 1863. Betsey was the daughter of Ebenezer #331 & Elizabeth Smith #332 (maiden name is not known at this time) His parents were Silas #236 Born c1750 and Celia Smith. Ebenezer's brother was Abram #238 h/o Martha. Sisters Elizabeth, Treacy #239, Mary "Polly" that married a Mr Hodge, and Sarah "Sally" #244 h/o Jarrod King who moved to Tenn? The old Silas Smith house was on the left side of the road on the way to Windsor. It was across from the home of Dr Charles Smallwood who lived there until 1889. Dr. died in 1899. His father John Smaw Smallwood later lived in the Silas Smith house. A neighbor was John Ruffin who lived eastward a little farther towards Windsor. This highway is now named the Jack Branch Road. Judith: Judith was the 2nd wife of Moore Rawls #203. Before her marriage to Moore he already had two living children: Mary Moore age 15 and Elizabeth Watson age 12. As step-mother of the above girls she must have done a good job and liked very much by them as my father received as his middle name Garrett in honor of Fannie's maiden name. She was 21 years younger that Moore Rawls. This union had three additional children. [1]Jonas Cleaton, [2] Robert Watson & [3] Frances Rawls. Fannie was daughter of Linny M. Peele and Edmund Garrett. Linny #607 was daughter of Dempsey Peelle #15310 the son of Josiah Peelle Sr #15148 who was my (Pete #1) g.g.g.g. grand father. Fannie was my 2nd cousin thrice removed. 1. Sarah Elizabeth Rawls, b. 1840, d. 1842 age 4. 2. Mary Moore Rawls, b. 09-15-1841. She married (1) Samual Cox, 08-25-1868, in Bertie Co NC, b. c1829, (son of George W Cox and Lydia Peelle) d. aft1869, Bertie Co NC. She married (2) Joseph S Parker, 1891, b. 07-09-1843, d. 02-12-1906, Rhodes Place Crossroad, Bertie Co NC, buried: Peele Cemetery, Rawls Farm. Mary died 02-19-1906. Information about Mary Moore Rawls Mary Moore Rawls was the third wife of Samuel Cox. He was the son of George W Cox and wife Lydia Peele. She was a child of Josiah Peele and Milley Higgs who were my (Pete Austin) 4th great grandparents. On 08-25-1868 Samuel Cox married as his third wife Mary Moore Rawls the daughter of Moore Rawls as his first wife Mary Arabella Smith who was the daughter of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Smith. His parents were Silas Smith and wife Celia Ellis my 4th great grandparents from Woodville Bertie Co NC. There was a son Henry F Cox born to this union between Samuel and Mary Moore> No additional information available at this time. Mary Moore Rawls Cox married as her second husband Joseph S Parker. He was buried in the Peele Cemetery located on the Jonas Rawls farm near the Peele school on the road to Francis Mill and then on to Republican, Bertie Co NC. Many, many of my relatives came to this area of Bertie County after they migrated from the Norfolk area of Virginia. Some stopped first in other counties such as Gates, Hertford and Northampton before settling here at Rhodes Place Crossroads. There were the Austin, Peele, Rawls, Moore, Bazemore, Young, Rhodes families plus other kin that raised their family in this part of what is now Snakebite Township. Today very few of these people live there now. You would have to fly with the wind to the four-corners of the globe to find all of their descendants. As of this date I have recorded over 18,477 of my ancestors and their relatives into my Brothers Keeper computer program.. Have lots that need to be entered and still finding new ones everyday. It is like an Easter egg hunt. You never known when or where you will find another prize. In the Peele Cemetery is a grave of Augustine Parker who probably is a daughter of Mary Moore and Joseph S Parker. From this union there was one known Child Mary Bualah Parker who married Thomas "Tom" Bryant Bazemore from near Lewiston. Their daughter was Mary Jessie Parker who married Judge Joseph Wiley Parker from Kelford. Jessie, my 2nd cousin once removed, wrote many articles on Bertie Co history. See Mary Bualah Parker for addition information on this family. Samual: Information on Samuel Cox In records by Dr Charles Smallwood from Woodville he referred to a Sam Cox as the 1st husband of Mary (Moore) Rawls (she married second Joseph S Parker). I also have records that gave his name as Samuel Cox Raynor? Samuel's mother was Lydia Peelle the wife of George Cox who was the son of Benjamin and Mary Cox from Roxobel, Bertie Co NC. Samuel was my (Pete Austin) 1st cousin four times removed by way of Josiah Peele and Milly Higgs. Both Josiah and Milly were my 4th Great Grand Parents. Records show that Samuel was born c1829 and died after 1869. He is reported to have married twice before his marriage to Mary Moore Rawls who was my Great, Great Aunt that was probably born at Rhodes Place Crossroad that is only a few miles from Teaster Shack area that is near Roxobel. Samuel is shown to have had one issue by each of his three wives. First wife was unknown and they had a daughter Lula Cox. Samuel's second marriage was to Sarah Frances Prichard and they had a daughter Mary Cox. He married as his 3rd third wife Mary Moore Rawls on August 25, 1868 (Bertie Co Marriage Records). She was my Great, Great Aunt and they had a son Henry F. Cox. At this time I have no data on any of these three Samuel Cox children. I am related to both Samuel Cox (Peele ancestors) and Mary Moore Rawls (Rawls ancestors). Not proven at this time if this Samuel Cox was the owner of the Cox house that was moved from Teaster Shack area to Hope Plantation in 1869. A single page Publication handout (I have a copy) at the Hope Library states that Samuel Cox died in 1868. This date does not completely correspond with the information I have on Samuel Cox that died after 1869. My Samuel was married in August 1868 and had a son Henry F Cox. However the son could have been born after Samuel's death. His wife Mary Moore Rawls Cox did not marry her 2nd husband Joseph S Parker until 1891. Additional help needed here. The Hope single page paper leaves some doubt as to who constructed the Samuel Cox House. Information found in the second paragraph of this publication states that the Samuel Cox house was built by his father and later credits as found in paragraph seven that the house was built by his uncle? George Cox had two brothers that were named Ruben H. and Richard Smith Cox, Richard S. Cox is named in a joint property deed with Wes Tynes. Wes was the 1st husband of Permelia Cox (parent not proven at this time) who married as her second husband John Johnson Jilcott from the Roxobel area. Please note that George Cox and Lydia Peelle Cox had a son Samuel Cox and a daughter named Penelope Cox. Other siblings were Ruben H who married Mary C Askew, Martha Matilda the 2nd wife of Joseph A Tyler who was the son of Perry Cotton Tyler and Joseph Cox that married Martha and had children named William, Fanny and Lousia Cox. At the current time I do not have any marriage records for Penelope Cox the daughter of George Cox and sister of Samuel Cox. In the Hope material on the Samuel Cox House it states that this Cox and Jilcott family were relatives. Could Penelope (daughter of George Cox) be the same person as Permelia Cox (parents unknown at this time) that married 1st Wes Tynes and 2nd John Johnson Jilcott? . The Samuel Cox House was donated to The Hope Plantation by Mrs Paul (Julia Watson) Jilcott and her children William ("Bill") J Jilcott and his twin sister Mrs Paul (Frances Jilcott) Benson from Battleboro (NC). After the death of Samuel Cox his home was acquired by members of the Jilcott family who were relatives of this Cox family. It is now used as the caretaker's residence at Hope Plantation and only open to the public except on special occasions. Please note that Ruben H. Cox had a daughter Lillian Cox that married Thomas Watson. Was Thomas related to Julia Watson who was one of the people to donate the Samuel Cox House to Hope?. Joseph: Joseph S Parker married my great Aunt Mary Moore Rawls. He was her second husband. Joseph plus his brother in- laws James W Peele and his wife's sister Elizabeth Watson Rawls and others are burned in the same Peele Cemetery near Rhodes Place Crossroads, Bertie Co NC I have not been able to located the grave of Marry Moore Rawls Cox Parker. She died within a week of the death of her Husband Joseph S Parker in February 1906. She may be one of the unmarked graves in the Peele Cemetery. Mary Moore Rawls married first Samuel Cox (my 1st cousin four time removed) the son of George W Cox and Lydia Peelle. She was the daughter of Josiah Peelle and Milley Higgs who were my (Pete Austin) 4th great grand parents. Samuel Cox married first an unknown spouse and they had a daughter named Lula Cox. He married his second wife on 12-14-1853 Sarah Frances Prichard and had one issue Mary Cox. On 08- 25-1868 Samuel Cox married as his 3rd wife my Great Aunt Mary Moore Rawls. They had one son Henry F Cox. I have not found any information on this son Henry F. Cox Joseph S Parker was the second husband of Mary Moore Rawls Cox Parker. He is buried in the Peele Cemetery located on the former Jonas Rawls Farm. The gravesites are about one mile east on the left side as you leave Rhodes Place Crossroads towards Francis Mill. This area is now in Snakebite Township, Bertie Co NC. Snakebite is the center core of Bertie County and is totally surrounded by all the other Townships. In the Peele Cemetery is a marker with inscription Augustine Parker. This probably was a child of Mary Moore and Joseph Parker. Their only known child was Mary Bualah Parker who married Thomas "Tom" Bryant Bazemore that lived near Lewiston on SR 1201 one mile going west towards Kelford. Tom and Bualah had four children one who was Mary Jessie Bazemore who married Superior Court Judge Joseph Wiley Parker from Kelford. Jessie had told me that I was related to both her and her husband Joe but I never recorded the data. Probably Joseph S and Judge Joseph W. were that connection. Jesse was my 5th grade teacher and contributed to my first research on the Austin Rawls Young, Everett and Peele families. She also wrote several articles on education in Bertie County. Jessie was my 2nd cousin once removed. She and Joe were good friends of my mine and my family. She always brought her family charts to the Peele and Rawls reunions. Also buried in this Peele Cemetery are my great grand parent James W (William) Peele and his wife Elizabeth "Bettie" "Betsey" "Aunt Bet" Watson Rawls. Aunt Bet as called by her relatives and friends lost her hand in mid life from a bite from a Black Widow Spider and had to have it amputated just below the elbow. She never complained nor did it interfere with he duties as a homemaker. She was known as a kind, loving, and a Christian lady. My aunts and uncles loved to go visit "Aunt Bet". She always had a warm biscuit on the back of the kitchen wood stove or pie safe and some yummy preserves fetched from the root cellar. "Aunt Bet" was a sister to Mary Moore Rawls. Their parents were Moore Rawls and Mary Arabella Smith the daughter of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Smith. His parent were my g.g.g.g.garnd parents Silas Smith and Celia Ellis from Woodville, I have family records that go back to my 9th great grandfather George Rawles Sr who was born 1615 in England and immigrated to America and died in Nansemond Co VA. The Peele cemetery is located on the farm formerly owned by Jonas Rawls and later passes down to his grand daughter Elizabeth Watson Rawls who married James William Peele. Note:I have traced the Peele family back to 9th grandfather Lawrence Peelle that was born 1601 in the British Kingdom, England and came to the Virginia's in the American Colony and died c1664 at County Elizabeth Cities on the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River. In family records this gravesite was called the Peele Cemetery and was found on the Rawls Farm near the Peele School. In the WPA cemetery survey report that was found in the Bertie County Courthouse in Windsor it described the location 9.5 miles S.W. from Aulander on the left side of the road to Republican and called it the Peele Cemetery. At that time it was grown-up with undergrowth. The date of birth of James W. Peele was given as Sept.10, 1845 that is an error. Family records give the date as 11-21-1837. The 1850 census gave (James) William's date of birth 1838. Either the surveyor was wrong with the recording or it was put on the tombstone incorrectly. I have never visited the site and did not know about the cemetery until I was researching the Peele history. A cousin, Wade Peele, wrote me to report that he had visited the cemetery in Feb.2001. He found that apparently a paper company had destroyed six gravesites and damaged others. What a shame this took place. I thought that it was against the law to destroy a grave. We need help as to what recourse we need to take to correct the problem. Additional graves identified in the Peele Cemetery can be found in the text of James William Peele. 3. Elizabeth Watson Rawls* g.grandmother, b. 12-01-1844, Woodville,NC. She married James William Peele* g.grandfather, 01-18-1866, in Bertie Co NC, b. 11-21-1837, Bertie Co NC, (son of Jarrod Peele* g.g.grandfather and Louisa "Lura / Lucy" Bazemore* g.g.gramy) d. 03-03-1925, Snakebite Township Bertie Co NC, buried: Peele Cemetery, Rawls Farm one mile east Rhodes Place. Elizabeth died aft 1900, Snakebite Township Bertie Co NC, buried: Peele Cemetery, Republican Rd. Elizabeth Watson Rawls joined St. Francis Methodist-Episcopal Church on 09- 26-1854. She was 9 yrs, 8 months, and 26 days of age. Elizabeth Watson Rawls was my ("Pete" Austin) Great Grandmother. She was the third child of Moore and Mary Arabella Smith Rawls. There were three girls & one son Dr "Starkey" Rawls #227 who was born 1847 in this family. Elizabeth was called by name Betsey, Bessie and "Aunt Bet" by family and friends. James: James William Peele was listed as William Peele in the 1850 census. He was given as being 12 years of age and born in NC. Recorded as the oldest child in the Jarrod Peele household. Other siblings listed in the 1850 census were Thomas, Sarah, Dempsey, Jackson and Celia E. Peele all living in the same household with their father Jarrod Peele. A cemetery census conducted by a WPA worker gave the following about the inscription on the tombstone of James W. Peele. Born Sept 10,1845 and died March 3, 1925 Company "C 68" H.C.Inf CSA. Either the WPA worker made an error in reporting birth date or the date on the tombstone was a mistake. Peele Cemetery data is given in a Book titled "Old Cemeteries" as found in the Bertie County Courthouse. It was located 9.5 miles S.W. of the town of Aulander, on the left-hand side of the road leading to Republican NC and completely grown up with undergrowth. The site is approx three miles northeast of Lewiston, Kelford and just a couple of miles from the present Bertie County High School. James William Peele and Elizabeth "Bettie" "Betsey" "Aunt Bet" Rawls Peele are both buried in Peele Cemetery what was formally the Rawls Farm in Snakebite Township, Bertie Co NC. Family records stated that it was between Rhodes Place Crossroads and the Peele school. My cousin Wade Roscoe Peele located and visited the gravesites of this Peele cemetery in Feb. 2001. He stated that the Cemetery is located approximately one mile east on Rhodes Place Crossroad on the north (left) side of the road to Francis Mill. He said that six of the graves had been destroyed apparently by a paper company, while they were planting trees. Wade wrote that he found the tombstones of James W and Bettie Rawls Peele. Also was the tombstone of Joseph S Parker (b July 9, 1843 -d. Feb 12 1905 who was the brother-in-law of Elizabeth "Bettie" Rawls. He had married his wife sister Mary Moore Rawls. Both were daughters of Moore Rawls and Mary Arabella Smith who were My (Pete Austin) great, grand parents. Moore's parents were Jonas Rawls and Sarah "Sally" Moore who at one time owned the property on which the Peele Cemetery is located. Another graves found there is that of Augustine Parker who was recorded as a child. I feel that she was probable a daughter of Joseph S Parker and his wife Mary Moore Rawls Cox Parker who had died young. Joseph S Parker was the second husband of Mary Moore Rawls Cox Parker. Records show that Mary Moore Rawls Cox Parker died within a week of the death of her husband Joseph in Feb. 1906. Her gravesite has never been located. Could one of these unmarked gravesites be that of Mary Moore Rawls? There are two graves with concrete slabs with no head marker. James W. Peele & Elizabeth were my great grandparents. James William Peele severed in the Civil War, CSA with Co C, and 68th North Carolina Infantry. This is the same unit in which David Thomas Minton (1837-1881) served. Wayne Modlin, a 4th cousin-once removed of mine sent data to me on the Peele, Modlin and Minton families. Wayne is a direct descendant of Dempsey Peele #15148 who was uncle to my g.g.grandfather James W. Peele #92. Dempsey was a son of Josiah Peelle #15148. Dempsey and his family lived on the Moore Road of off State Road 11 toward Kelford, where he lived and died. Record show there was a tombstone of Sallie Jernigan in the Peele cemetery with no other data given. A purge of my files gives no hint as to her identity. James served in the C.S.A., as given above, with David Thomas Minton #3710 who married his 1st cousin-once remover Mary Elizabeth Powell #3711. Henry Averitt Sr #225 (will probated in 1722) was father of Henry Averitt Jr #223 (will 1771) that married Millia X? Their daughter Martha Averitt m. John Young #217 (will 1836 Book G, page 263 and names five daughters (#1) Lavernia Young Cotton #219 wife of Jesse Cotton (#2) Sarah Young Peele the 1st Wife of James Wiliam Peele #92. Additional data on Shoulars family: Bob Shoulars, a cousin, lived next door to my family when I was growing upin Kelford. Julius Earl Shoulars and George Washington Shoulars plus many others were classmates or friends of mine. I never knew this connection until years later. 4. Dr. Starky Robert Smith Rawls, b. 1847.
