Today we went to this old gravesite and it was amazing. I will share these graves as best I could read them today, I'm going back later to try and verify. These head markers as big and as nice as I have ever seen in Bertie during this time period. Alexander W. Mebane died 2-5-1847 age 47 Thaddeus Mebane died 1845 Julius A. Mebane died 11-18-1853 21 years old John E. W. Mebane died 4-14-1835 age 6yrs 7 months died from Scarlet Fever John Thomas Mebane born 4-13-1838 died 11-15-1887 (My comments: John T. Mebane was a Confederate Capt, During the Civil War. Mary E. C. Mebane died 10-29-1855 age 50 years. Note this headstone is nearly 10 feet tall and at least 3 feet wide. Ann S. Mebane born 6-8-1809?(not sure) Died 6-29-1878 William A Mebane born 7-23-1829 Died 1-1878 It appears Mary Margaret Mebane wife of William A Mebane born 11-7-1841 died 10-27-1893 is buried in the Haste Cemetery near Windsor. Her head marker reads as follows wife of Wm A Mebane and mother of Wm and Thos H Mebane. The lived near Hermitage (spelling may incorrect) near Mt Gould near the Chowan River. The 1850 and 1860 Bertie Census does not reveal much, but the 1860 Perquimans County Census seems very interesting; they are seemingly all in Bertie in 1870. Their head markers are ca. 2/10 mile from the River. ADDITIONAL NOTES: Bertie Count/Hermitage Plantation seemed to be a vacation area for this family of wealth from Orange County, NC. Recent documentation/sharing info from Sally Moore Koestler and John Fox pretty much verify the census data. Mary Wood Mebane's brother John E Wood owned a large tract of land in Bertie in the late 1700's and early 1800's. The Mebane family appear to be close with the Moring family also. In 1842 Wm Moring and AW (Alexander Wood) Mebane purchased 300 acres (joining land of Durgan & Blanchard) and 500 acres on the Roanoke River adjoining Wm Moring and others. This would be interesting to find out exactly where this tract of land is. In the 1850 census Alexander Wood Mebane II age 9 was living with the Raynor family. His mother Mary E Collins Howe Mebane had married James Rascoe Raynor after her husband AW Mebane Sr had died in 1847. His wealth (James R Raynor) was listed in the 1850 census as Value of Real Estate $13,000. In the 1860 census John Thomas Mebane age 22 (born 4-13-1838) was living with the John Pool family in Bertie County, their wealth was listed as follows; Jno Pool (Lawyer) value of real estate 25,000, value of personal estate 32,600. John Pool married Mary Elizabeth Mebane (daughter of Alexander Wood Mebane). In the same 1860 census John Thomas Mebane was listed as follows; real estate 25,000 personal estate 25,000. Alexander Wood Mebane II age 19 was living with William Moring age 55 value of real estate 67,928 and value of personal estate 118,600, AW Mebane age 19 was "at school" his personal estate was listed as 53,500. William Alexander Mebane age 30 was listed in the 1860 Perquimans County census as follows value of real estate 57,000, value of personal estate 81,860. John T Mebane was also listed in the listed as Perquimans County census with a value of personal estate of 16,000. I'm almost sure this is the same family but a John Pool age 44 his wife was M. E. age 33 with children M. H. Pool age 10 and John age 8 are living in Pasquotank County, Elizabeth City, NC in the 1870 census. John Pool is listed as a US Senator. I have the following info on John Pool and his family; John Pool b 1826 d 1884, wife Mary Elizabeth Mebane b. abt 1836 children Mary Howe Pool b. ca 1860 and John Pool born 8/301863. William A Mebane b.1829 and d. 1878 married Mary Ashburn February of 1852, he later married Mary Margaret Bond March 15, 1866. She was daughter of Thomas Bond and Sawyer ?, the Bond's value of real estate in 1850 was 30,000. Money/wealth played a large part with all these families. She Mary Margaret Bond Mebane is buried in what is called the Haste cemetery near Windsor. Most of those that are buried there are her parents and siblings. I went to this cemetery about 5 years ago, it was recorded by Helen Modlin WPA survey 1938. Her husband Wm. A. Mebane is buried at Hermitage. NOTES: The Mebane family which you posted was part of the descendants of Alexander Mebane, Sr. and his wife Mary Tinnin of Chester County, Pa and old Orange County, NC. These Mebanes settled into what is now Alamance County, NC. Alexander Wood Mebane was a son of William Mebane of Mason Hall, Orange County, NC. William Mebane was a son of Col. Alexander Mebane, Jr and his first wife, Mary, "Mollie" Armstrong of Orange County, NC. Alexander Mebane was a Representative from North Carolina; born in Hawfields, N.C., November 26, 1744; attended the common schools of Orange County; delegate to the Provincial Congress of North Carolina in 1776; justice of the peace in 1776 and sheriff of Orange County in 1777; auditor of the Hillsboro district in 1783 and 1784; member of the Hillsboro convention in 1788 and of the Fayetteville convention in 1789; member of the State house of commons 1787-1792; elected to the Third Congress (March 4, 1793-March 3, 1795); died at Hawfields, Orange County, N.C., July 5, 1795. Alexander Wood Mebane, was a son of William Mebane and his second wife, Mary Wood. Alexander Wood Mebane was married to Mary E. C. Howe in Bertie County in March of 1824 William and his second wife, Mary Wood must have moved to Bertie shortly after their marriage as they had a second son, John Howe Mebane who was born in Bertie in 1807. Descendants of this family married into the Graves and Yancey families of Yanceyville, North Carolina in Caswell County. From John Fox Bebenjohn@aol.com
