Bertie County NC Cemetery - Wynns Family Contributed to USGenWeb Archives by: Lynn McCarthy Lcmccarthy@aol.com General Wynn African - American Family Cemetery Mitchell's Township Bertie County NC LOCATION The General Wynn Family Cemetery is located on the South side of the Hexlena Road (SR 1200), approximately 165 yards from the junction of Hexlena Road and Holloman Road (SR 1250). The cemetery is on a rise approximately 25 feet from the road surface, between a cotton and a corn field. DATE RECORDED 01 December 2000 RECORDER Lynn McCarthy CONDITION OF CEMETERY This cemetery is visible and accessible. It has no ground cover and is in very poor condition. There is no fencing. Markers are broken. In 1941, this cemetery was included in the NC Historical Records Survey and the condition of the cemetery was described as bad. At that time, there was a marker for David Askew, born 1852, died Feb.---, 1911. This marker could not be located at the time of the current recording. MARKED GRAVES There are approximately 55 graves in addition to the ones recorded. A team of Bertie List volunteers is needed to record all markers before this cemetery is further decimated. General Wynns Born in Bertie Co. Oct. 25, 1852 Died Nov. 25, 1910 Age 58 years A mason's square & compass (with a G) was on the marker Mary F. Wynns Sept. 9, 1861 Nov. 22, 1938 Mabel Wynn Born July 3 1904 Died Dec. 29 1975 Amy wife of ? Winn Dec. 28 19?? Easter Nov. 13, 1910 UNMARKED GRAVES There are some unmarked graves in this cemetery, one being that of David Askew, born February, 1856 - died, February, 1911. It is possible that pieces of his marker can be located and the stone re-assembled. Additionally, his wife, Emaline Mitchell Askew, born 06 June 1850, died 02 October 1932, is buried in this cemetery. No marker for her could be located. NOTATIONS The 1941 NC Historical Records Survey reported that Amy Wynn was born 1793 and died Dec. 28, 1908 and she was the wife of Stephen Wynn. At the time of this recording, the only pieces of the marker that could be found read Amy, wife of ______ Winn, Dec. 28, 19__. It is not known if the information re: Stephen was on the original marker or was data supplied by the recorder from her knowledge. In the federal 1900 census, Amie, mother of General Wynn was living in his household. Her birth date was given as December 1801, her age was 98 and she was a widow. She was not listed in the 1910 census and it is presumed that given her advanced age that she died not long after the 1900 census. It is also presumed that the Amy Wynn marker is the marker for General Wynn's mother. It is possible that pieces of her marker could be located and more accurate data assembled. Data presented on Easter Wynn in the 1941 Historical Records Survey reported that she was born in 1845 and died on November 13, 1910. In the 1900 federal census, Easter Wynn's birth information was given as August, 1946. In the 1910 federal census, an Easter Wynn was living in the household of General Wynn, her brother. At the time, her age was given as 70. This would have put her birth year at ca. 1840. It is thought that the marker for Easter Wynn is that of the sister of General Wynn. If additional pieces of her marker can be located, it is possible that the marker can be re-assembled and more accurate data learned. Mary F. Wynn was the wife of General Wynn and her marble marker is next to her husband's marker. The variances in the spelling of the Wynn surname reflect the actual data on the markers. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
