Bertie County is so vast, "neighbors" may be right down the road or miles away. Still, tax lists such as the one for Captain William Spivey's District, build communities for us. We can't forget the five-mile rule either. A young man couldn't go courting at night much further than five miles or he wouldn't make it back home the next morning in time for farm chores. Five miles was a long way to go, on foot, by horseback or buggy. Young men often married young women within that five mile radius so these tax lists may yield the family from whence our female ancestors came. This particular tax list provides the number of acres of land, not the value. Data is also contained in the listing about previously deceased members of the community: the father of John Stallins, B[enjamin] Brown, E[phriam] Mitchell and John Mitchell. If we keep tracking back in the tax lists, we will find a close approximation of the year these gentlemen passed away. This tax list should be studied in concert with the 1810 federal census for Bertie County (also in the Archives On-Line), tax lists before and after this one, and deeds. Should we find that the number of acres of land in a tax list was less than the number recorded in a deed, we shouldn't dismiss the fact that for tax purposes, there may have been under-reporting. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
