HISTORIC AFRICAN AMERICAN CHURCHES IN BERTIE COUNTY

This book contains two interesting essays on the historic African American
Churches and their development by Alice Eley Jones (African American History
Consultant, Durham, NC.)  and Benjamin Speller(Dean, NC Cen Univ, Durham)

The majority of the book was prepared by LaRae Umfleet and contains photos
of all church buildings and histories of each one.  Many of these list the
organizing families.


For our purposes, I'm listing the churches (alphabetical) and the
approximate date of organization and location.

(1st members of freed slaves had first been members of a white church, Holly
Grove Baptist Church)  Land donated by slave owner, Walt Mitchell.

Sandy Branch Missionary Baptist Church (Roxobel) (before 1871) Some
worshipped in their homes as slaves.

Sandy Point Missionary Baptist Church (Windsor) 1872
(Original  building dates to 1776. Prior to 1872 whites and blacks
worshipped together)

Speller's Chapel Church of Christ (Windsor) 1873

Weeping Mary Baptist Church (Lewiston) 1889

Woodville Plains Missionary Baptist Church (Lewiston-Woodville) Original
date unknown, but thought to be one of the oldest in area. First at Woodville.

Wynn's Grove Baptist Church (Colerain) 1875

Zion Bethlehem Baptist Church (Windsor) 1865
