White, Minister May 27, 1979 $2.00 per copy July 1851 Bro William Mitchell maid (made) known the debt for building the new Meeting House ware (were) settle - on motion the residue of funds in hands of Bro. Arron P. Askew to be paid over to Bench Committee satisfied if any left to be paid over to the treasures of the church. Agreed to sustain delegates in their votes at the Association Meeting in May 1851, at Bethlehem Church to sustain a Missionary in China by the Association. On roll: 62 white males 140 female white 17 colored males 36 colored females Sept Motion that church meet at nine o’clock every morning during the protracted Meeting for prayer. Motion when candidate present self to the church fellowship the vote to be taken by Rasing and setting; 9 yeas - 11 nays. There were 27 whites who came forward for the ordinance of Baptism and 2 Blacks. Rose L. Jenkins and Lewis W. T. Tharrock. Feb 1852 Collection of charity for Bro. Joel Lassiter amounted to $3.00. March Bro. James Early since desirious to get off to the West, partition for a letter Dismission and was granted by order of the conference. Bro. _________ and Sis. ___________ expelled from church fellowship for Bastardly. $2.50 sent to Association Fund. Asa F. Early’s Duke cited, tried and expelled from church fellowship for the act of theft. April Bro. Wm. A. Nichols be excused for delinquency. Sept. The treasurer to pay Bro. J. A. .50 cents for a well bucket. Oct. Lucy Wiggins, free Negro, expelled from church membership. July 1853 Query presented by Bro. W. Dunning - can a Baptist having been expelled from a Church to which he belong having become extinct, gain admission in an other church of like Faith and order provided he or she can give satisfaction of a re -affirmation - discussed and decided cannot. Feb. 1854 Bro. Willie Dunning stated to the church the cause of his backwardness in preaching Owing to the church not writing his name in our letter to the Association at Piney Grove, Gates County in the year of 1852 - On motion sence of conference be taken Regard of the above stated fact to give Bro. Dunning satisfaction younanimously (unamious) in the affirmative. April Took up collection for support of Home Mission - received $8.46 for church funds. May Voted to have a Meeting House underpin, painted, and fenced in. Nov. On motion the Black People have ceits (seats) in the House when convenient. On Motion and carried there may be a Gallery built in Connaritsa Meeting House for the Benefit of the Black population. 3 appointed to superinten the building and the Committee to have use of the Old house to dispose of as they think proper, benefit of the Gallery. Feb. 1855 Moved and carried, Brethern owners of Slaves are respectfully solicited to tell those Slaves that are members of this church attend Conference on Saturday of our Monthly meeting. April On motion take stance of conference whether or not we support Home Missions, decided in the affirmative….collected for that purpose $9.75. Sept. New members … Blacks - L. Jenkins’ Martildar and free Lucinder Wiggins. Aug. 1857 Committee appointed to procure a piece of land for a House, and the church to Take further action next conference. Sept 1857 Committee reported and was discharged. Motion and second that the House be completed and remain where it is. The house was one the church procured for the comfort of Sister Jane Slade. April 1858 Question as whether or not to support Edenton church in a pastor. June Bal. of $12.00 to be raised to pay for brick work done for Connaritsa Meeting House. $5.42. raised. Jan. 1859 Bro. Thos. Bunch (who lately returned from California) commenced Services By reading a chapter in the Book of Romans. Pastor paid $53.45 for the last year. Oct. (Christian Nichols and 22 other whites received for baptism) The following colored received at the water -William Burdin’s Siss William L. Blacks Peel’s Ned Williford’s Richmond Freeman’s Samuel Jan. 1861 Sermon by Elder Cone, upon the subject of Divine Origen of slavery. March The treasurer ordered to pay .50 cents for a well bucket. July “A letter was read from brother G.W. Francis informing the church he had Enlisted to go to war, but wished to remain with us, and solicited an interest in the Prayers of the church to which the church gave her consent.” March 1862 “Owing to the militia being called Windsor there was not enough members Present to hold conference…..” Sept. 1862 Hasty Thomas (slave) was received in to the church, baptism being administered next morning. $63.75 collected to pay pastor for year. March 1863 Letters were read by the clerk from the absent brethren in the army, John Francis, George J. Shoulders, William Farmer, expressing their love for the church and also Desired, an interest, her prayers. March 1864 “Owing to my having been taken off by the Yankies (Yankees) in January and not having the church books for several meetings, after my return, I was unable to record the proceedings of March - April - and May, --- “ J.L. Mitchell C. Clk June Alden Bazemore, Ralph Myers, Alfred Jernigan, Kenneth Butler, and Richard Hillington were expelled for having gone to the Yankies, Also all colored members having left. (No church records - July 1864 - 1866, for proceedings lost by Bro. J. N. Mitchell who was clerk during that time.) April 1866 Female and colored membership lists called and corrected as much as possible. May Request all the colored members of our church to attend next meeting in order that the clerk may obtain a correct list of them. Feb. 1867 Charge against Jane Howard, colored woman for ---, on motion expelled. June Sister - - - was expelled for dancing. On motion letter of dismission granted Sister Celia Burdin (Colored woman). Aug. …on motion Pastor requested to publish from the stand tomorrow - that all the Colored members of the Church at Connaritsa are requested to attend conference on Saturday before the 3rd Sabbath in October next…. and inform the church whether or not they wish to remain members.. adjournment. Prayer by Bro. Howard Eld. Thos. Hoggard, Mod. A. J. Dunning, Clk. Sept Pastor paid $47.75 for the year. #37. subscribed had not been paid. Oct. 1867 Letters of dismission were granted the following colored members -Drew Howard Loucenda Howard Richmond Williford Rose Williford …on motion agreed to reconside the action of last conference in regard to the election of pastor. Feb. 1868 ….Brother Cowand and D. Rice a committee of inquiry to report on motion agreed That publication be made from the stand tomorrow and in March also - for all colored members of this church to make their personal appearance here on Saturday before the 3rd Lord’s Day in April next - or they will be considered no longer members of this church. March Colored Brethern - Dorsey and Kans Mitchell granted letters of dismission. April …”the time having arrived for the colored members to report - in accordance with a resolution passed at Feb. Conference - Clk informed the Church of the same and on motion seventeen were expelled - (whose name were on the church record and known to be living and did not report) the following colored members were granted letters of dismission, Enos Jenkins, wife Rosa, and daughter Lucy Ann, Mosley Burdin, and wife Eliza, Penny Mitchell, Antinette Dunning, York, Lawrence Jenkins and wife Annie, Daniel Mitchell, Cader Mitchell, and wife Ester, …female list called and corrected, on motion adjourned. May …Door opened, Rodney Mitchell, colored - was restored to fellowship and granted a letter of dismisson…. Oct. Eld. Hoggard declined to accept call as pastor whereas church elected Eld. Bunch -Reconcideration of election of Pastor and Eld Hoggard was elected to serve next 5 Years…”thus settled the Pastor question.” Nov. Letters of dismission were granted Bro. James Williams and Eliza Mitchell, colored… Dec. Letter granted Fillie Mitchell, Colored Feb. 1869 in letter to association, clerk requested to state in letter that we are opposed to Dividing, the association or changing the time of meeting. May New letters of dismission grand Laurendo Jenkins and wife Annie, Colored, having lost former letters. June Letter granted Melie Thomas Col. Sept. 33 baptized at Askew’s Mill. Oct. Committee appointed to purchase a stove or order one from Norfolk, and to put it up. Dec 1870 Bro. Castelow allowed $10. for the present year for attention to the House and stove. June letter of dismission grand Gotty Burdin, Colored…. April 1871 Sermon by Bro. Roffman, Methodist. May Joseph Flythe was received for Baptism from the Methodist Church. Resolution Adopted from association that each male and female member contribute one cent a Week into the church treasury for Missionary and Educational purposes starting June 1, and that church pay this to the association quarterly. July Lewis Tharrock, Col., petitioned to be restored, on motion, defused (refused). April 1873 Sunday, April 18, Remarkable weather! “The Earth covered with snow and very Cold. Monday morning the 19th excessive cold. Ice Plentiful. Wednesday morning the 21st Cold and Snowing. April 1872 Dudley’s Grove (now Oak Grove) constituted out of Connaritsa Baptist Church in Hertford County. (members who started Dudley’s Grove are listed in the church Minutes). Sept. $333.25 raised to put church in order in preparation for the Association in May of 1873. May 1873 R.A. Cowand and Jas. M. Early were appointed to guard the Table zone during the Association. Bro. L. Burdin was appointed to see that the ladies were seated. Congregation invited by pastor to dine on the 1st day of Association. Aug. Subscription taken for Wake Forest College amounted nearly $300. Oct. $250. for the endowment of W. F. College was raised. Feb. 1875 --------- was expelled from the church, owing to his sudden departure from the State, together with charges of defrauding. April $7.60 taken up to send to Association for missions. May $9.60 taken up for Orphan Assylum at Oxford. Aug. Bro. John Layton received by letter from the church at Rocky Hock. Jan. 1876 $8.87 taken up for B. S. Convention for Missions. Feb. B. B. Lassiter, Jno. Brudin, Jno H. Mitchell, Jr., W.H. Mitchell, W.J. Williford were appointed to lead the singing in the church. June $8.25 collected for Home and Indian Missions. July raised a club of subscribers to the “Recorder” in order to obtain a church Bible. Oct. Motion to have Bible stand covered and drawers made in Table for Bible and Hymn Book. June 1877 $6.50 collected for church in Plymouth. The following sisters by request of the Brethern were added to the choir. Julia Marsh, Irmie Marsh, Sallie Burdin, Julia Nowell, Lucy Burdin. Sept. $4.00 collected for new church in Virginia. Dec. the subject of liquor selling discussed….Brethern Jas. H. Herring, W.S. Herring, W. J. Dunning, W. G. Burdin reported for selling whiskey. Jan. 1878 Committee report on those whiskey reported and on motion case indefinitely postponed. Feb. Voted to ordain Bro. Jesse R. Matthews as minister. April J. R. Matthews ordained as a Minister. Aug. Bro. J. M. Early made a statement in regard to an action of the church in time of the late war expelling all members who had gone to the Yankies. After some discussion decision the matter was on motion deferred to next meeting. Jan 1879 Sexton’s salary for year $10. Aug. Bro. C. W. Mitchell asked the church to bear with his absence during his stay at Wake Forest College which was granted. March 1880 $27.50 collected for S.B. Theological Seminary. (note - reference to (pratice) partake of Lord’s Supper). June Bro. A. Casteloe was instructed to have a bucket out to the well. July Committee appointed to have a new well dug. Sept. $2.00 collected for Home and Foreign Missions. April 1881 Pastor’s salary $160 Nov. “a motion to furnish spittoons for the church was lost.” Jan 1882 $65.50 taken up for W.F. College and subscription of $134.50 payable in 1 to 5 years. April “on motion it was ordered that when this church collects as much as $3. for Missions, the same shall be sent to Raleigh at once”. July $10.13 raised for Wingate Memorial Hall at Wake Forest College. Aug. after much discussion, protracted meeting decided to be week after 3rd Sabbath in Sept. Sept. Committee appointed to collect funds to purchase carpet for the church. April 1883 $170.00 was collected as pastor’s salary for 1882 May “ordered that the church take a letter of dismission from the Chowan Association.” June The resolution to send Education Funds to Raleigh repealed and to be sent to the Executive Committee of the Bertie Union Mettin at Winton, N.C. July Question: should the pastor dismiss conference by a benediction was discussed at Length and carried affirmative. Aug. after statement of Bro. A.J. Dunning, concerning what was said in the stand, by out Pastor today, he tendered to the church his resignation as deacon. He was followed by Bro. W. G. Burdin and Bro. Jon. Wynns, who also tendered to this church, their resignation as deacons. Church accepted their resignations. Nov. a committee was appointed to see -------- --- and request him to quit the sale of liquor Bro. A.J. Dunning presented a very nice cloth for communion table as a gift of sister Olivia Fraince (Francis) (late deceased). Jan 1884 Bro. J. L. Burdin presented an acct. against the church for $5.00 paid out for coal for the church. April the church assumed the expense of the pastor while attending the Southern Baptist Convention at Baltimore. April 1884 Bro. A. F. Early to pay 5 cents a bushel for the 15 bushels of coal gotten for the church. May Pastor’s expense in attending the S.B. Convention was $12.45 - “He gave very Interesting talk about the Convention”. Aug. Sisters Ledelie Burdin, Lillie Jenkins, and Betty Rice were appointed to collect $10. from the Sisterhood of the church for State Missions by next meeting. Sept. $175. - Pastor’s salary for 1883 - and $22.00 paid out as church expense. Endowment at W. F. College $413.50 toward building church at Lewiston $45.50, Nov. Pastor urged members to take the Recorder. Jan. 1885 Bro. J.A. Lane was ordered to be paid .50 cents out of the treasury, the amt, Advanced by him to the Union Meeting. March Bro. C.E. Mitchell stated that he had promised at the late Session of the West Chown Association, to pay $25.00 on the debt of the C.B.F. Institute, and asked the members Of the church to aid him in raising the amount, which was agreed to. April Silver Plated Communion Set presented to this church by our worthy brother, C.W. Mitchell. June 1886 On motion agreed to meet tomorrow morning at 9 ½ o’clock to organize a Sunday School at this church. Sept. ….Dismission to join new church at Aulander (note - 31 names listed) Sept. Bro. C.W. Mitchell reported $12.05 in the treasury. Oct. Bro. ------- reported himself to the church for intoxication, etc. Dec. ---- was reported for fighting and on motion was excused by this church. June 1887 On motion this church agreed to hold a protracted meeting beginning on the second Sunday in next August. Aug. Collection Sunday for the American Bible Society - $1.95. Jan. 1888 Bro. Castelow was reappointed Sexton of this church and that he be allowed $12.00 for his services during the year. Bro. Evans reported Bro. P.A. Bazemore for being intoxicated. May Pastor thus informed the church that Mr. Charles W. Mathews desired License To preach the Gospel. May 1889 Bro J. X. Early presented bill of $10.50 amt. Paid for Communion Table. July Motion was offered to change time of meeting for service in our protracted meeting from evening to morning - voted down. Bro. Norfleet Lassiter given permission to exercise his ministerial gifts in the Ministry and the clerk was instructed to prepare the usual letter of credentials. Oct. 1889 ….the chair appointed a committee to put up stove. Nov. Committee reported the expense of putting up stove to be $11.74…. Dec. Pastor then asked the church to give enough money to buy new carpet for the Pulpit And proposed to be one of fifteen who would pay for the same….a com. to purchase the carpet desired - and put it on the floor by the meeting of the Union Meeting. Jan. 1890 Bro. Evans proposed to make an effort to have a singing school for the benefit of the Church. Bro. Evans was instructed to try and procure the services of Bro. Mathews as Teacher, provided he would teach the school for twenty-five dollars. (note - the school was held). … committee to purchase carpet, - reported the work completed, and presented bill for same, $10. - which amt. Was raised. Aug. …Bro. W. G. Burdin requested to furnish Bro. E. Williams with a hat - and that he present bill for same to the church. (note - Sept. - reported that hat was purchased for $1.00 and amount was raised with .67 cents left over). Sept. Centennial Service - “The congregation was estimated to number between twenty-five hundred an three thousand. The time having arrived for Dr. Huffham’s address he took the stand in the door - and for one hour and a half - he held his audiance spell bound in the storing away the history of many of our fore fathers, and their labors, in the building up and advancement for the cause of our Great Redeemer - and Missionary Baptist Doctrine. Jan. 1891 On motion our pastor requested to publicly denounce, from the pulpit, the practice of Chewing tobacco, and spitting on the floor during the services or any other time - and That the pastor continue to denounce the practice at the opening service of several Subsequent Meetings in order to brake up the practice. Feb. Pastor’s salary - $172.25 With very strong support from the pastor the church raised $100. for Wake Forest College. Feb. 1893 Resolved that Connaritsa Church will not hereafter, grant letters or dismission to its Members who are in arrears, until said money is paid or remitted by the church. May Collection taken for the poor. Clk. Requested to purchase two sitting chairs for the Use of the Mod. and Clk. Dec. 1894 Treasurer reported $332.52 total amt. of contribution by this church for year of 1893 - including pastor’s salary. Oct. Roll called, door opened … Female list corrected. March 1895 On motion Bro. Jas. P. Slade and Jno. Nowell were appointed to investigate and find out if there was a member of this church selling whiskey in Lewiston or anywhere else and report at our next conference. April Bro. …… expelled for selling liquor. June 1895 request from Dudley’s Grove for a small contribution - $4.80 was raised for them. July $1.88 was taken up for the benefit of the Seminary at Louisville, Ky. Bro. Newton gave us an outline of the orphanage work, etc. Aug. No preaching nor conference owing to the inclemency of the weather. Sept. Sept. Meeting - Sister Laura A. Jernigan was received from Rosses Church by letter. …It being tine to call a pastor for the insuring yr. Bro. Speight vacated the chair and Bro. A. J. Dunning was ask to act as Mdr. and the church proceeded at once to call a Pastor. On Motion of Bro. W. G. Burdin our present incumbent was called unamiously at a salary not less than $150.00. The Moderator appointed the Deacons of the Church to wait on Bro. Speight and inform of his election. Bro. Speight responded in a most pleasant speech in accepting the call. On motion the Mdr. appointed the following breathern as delegates to the Association (to wit) W. G. Burdin, R.A. Cowand, and W. H. Hale, alternate B. B. Lassiter. On motion $2.50 Was sent to the minute fund. Nov. Bro. A. J. Dunning reported Bro. H. L. Early for fighting on motion the Bro. Was Excused. On motion collection was ordered … to aid Sister Rice in sending her children to the orphanage at Thomasville. Amt. collected - $7.24. Dec. $1.32 taken for the poor. The clerk was instructed to write to the clerk of the West Chowan Association and Inquire why this church did not get her usual number of church minutes. Jan. 1896 Bro. Lewis S. Thompson licensed to preach. Feb. … after some discussion Bro. T.J. Vaughan was expelled from the fellowship of this Church for, immoral conduct., .. March While singing “Oh Bless Of the Purefied” a collection of $1.73 was taken up for the Poor. Committee appointed to revise church list, made a report an the list was read out in open conference… a committee of eight Breathern appointed to get up a list of the Sisters …(to wit) B.B.Lassiter, Jessee Hoggard, C. W. Early, J. H. Nowell, J.P. Slade, W. G. Burdin, Robt. A. Cowand, and Geo. W. Jernigan. April Bro. J. S. Jenkins and Jessee Hoggard were appointed as collectors for this year. On motion and agreed to have a series of meetings commencing the 2nd Lord’s Day in August 1896 at 9 o’clock A.M. - the pastor to invite ministerial aid to assist him in the meeting. April $3.26 taken up for church in Washington. May $2.57 taken up for church in Siloam. July While singing (We’ll Work, etc.), a collection of .84 cents was taken up for the poor. Aug. Protracted meeting postponed until 5th Sunday in August. Oct. .50 cents paid Bro. T. P. Hale for window lits (lights). Nov. The deacons through Bro. Josiah reported that they had purchased a stove for the Church at a cost of $10.00, On motion the amt. was raised and pd. April 1897 While singing ?When I can read my tilles clear,” the church extended the right hand Of fellowship to Bro. Baughan. May Finance Report: Offerings for charitable objects $159.94 disbursements 156.89 Bal in Nov 96 3.05 Total receipts Nov. ’95 - Apr. ’97 $209.95 disbursements 206.92 Bal. in hand 3.03 Sept. Resolution to denounce a report being circulated on Pastor as being willful malicious and false and that members of the church will sustain him until further convinced. (note - pastor was T.T. Speight who went on to serve until 1910). Nov. Bro. Watson, pastor of Edenton Church requested a letter for J. S. Lassiter. Jan. 1898 $3.00 was taken up for sister Bracy who was going to the hospital in Baltimore. March (note - unusual obituary recorded in minutes - Ben Lassiter of Hexlena) …..a called Conference to take steps to build a church at this place. Building committee: W. G. Burdin, J. M. Early, A. J. Dunning, Josiah Early, H. J. Slade, W. H. Hale, Jessie Hoggard, John A. Early, Jas. R. Parker, John A. Nowell, Wm J. Hoggard, W. A. Jenkins, L. J. Tayloe and J. P. Slade. June Church voted to have protracted meeting in the summer with the meeting to begin 2nd Sunday in August with service to begin at 1 P.M. “The pastor was instructed to get such ministerial aid as he may choose.” July … to meet 1st Sunday in August for purpose of shrubbing and cleaning up church Grounds. Sept. Church furnished lumber to repair Bro. Elisha Williams’ house before winter comes on. Nov. … a collection of $3.25 taken up for Mr. J. A. Flythe’s wife at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dec. Bro. Josiah Early reported that the committee appointed to look after and repair Old Bro. William’s house had built the Old Bro. A new house and asked the church to pay Only $2.60 which was raised. Jan 1899 (note - a complete treasurers’ report is recorded in minutes). Aug. Bro. N. D. Cowand reported himself for Dancing, on motion the Bro. Was excused for the same. Dec. Subscription for Bldg, Fund $345.00 Dec 1899 Sisters Virginia F. Rodgerson and Nancy L. Farmer were reported as having connected themselves with the organization known as “Parker’s Church” …(note -this church was started in Aulander and stood where the peanut plant is now. Mr. Parker stated that if his church was the work of the devil as some stated it would not Stand and if it was of the Lord it would stand… it no longer exists!). Feb. 1900 Bro. Burdin of Building committee reported that he had advised with a carpenter of Gates County - and had reached a conclusion that is would be economy to tear down the old building and use the same timbers in the construction of a new house. June … voted to have a protracted meeting 1st Sunday in August. Aug. Bro. Burdin reported that the carpenter was about ready to raise the new building and wished to know if the church was ready to tear down the old house. Agreed to meet Monday week to tare down the old house. Sept. Conference was held in the grove owing to the new house not being ready to be occupied. Bro. Dunning introduced the question and sample of the memorial windows and doors and stated that the front doors and 4 windows would be put in the new church in honor and memory of the following named: Asa F. Early, Willey Dunning, Harvey J. White, and C. W. Mitchell. (note - drawings in minutes). Nov. Owing to house not being ready …. assembled in Grove. Dec. Collection taken to help pay for the Burial expenses of Old Bro. Williams - a sum of $500 was raised. Feb. 1901 ….listed names and amts. For furnishings of the church taken. March Committee of 5 or more sisters appointed to purchase carpet and pulpit furniture. Sister W. G. Burdin, Sister George Williford, Miss Maud Williford, Miss Genie Early, and Miss Cora L. Burdin. (note - those already on the committee were: Sister Debro Mitchell, Sister Jas. T. Nowell, sister Josiah Early, Sister Jos. S. Jenkins, and Sister John P. Morriss). “Bro. A. W. Early made some very interesting and touching remarks in regard to our new house of worship.” Oct. Bro. A. J. Dunning reported for the Building Committee that the house was Completed an that there was an indebtedness of $422.47 due our treasurer W. G. Burdin for advances. Dec. Bro. W. G. Burdin purchased a heater for the church at cost of $11.00 of which $7.56 was raised. Jan. 1902 $12.50 requested for burial of Mrs. Lucy Williams, to be carried over to next conference. March …report made that burial expenses of Mrs. Williams made by relatives. March 1902 Committee authorized to have benches painted, have a yard built around the church. May Painter’s bill for benches was $44.03. June $8.32 taken up for J. W. Farmer who lost his smokehouse and kitchen by fire. July Bro. John …. Informed the church that he was going to sell whiskey and wished his name erased from the church roll. Aug. Church informed Jim Parker had offered to build yard fence around the church for .65 cents per “pannell” agreed to hire Bro. Parker. Oct. Jim Cook and Percy Hale were appointed to keep off intruders about the tables during the Association. Oris Zhale and Earnest Askew were appointed ushers. J.A. Burdin to furnish 3 tables and 3 chairs - J. P. Slade to furnish Bible and Chairs For the Preacher’s stand. Bill of $17.86 presented for new well and House over it, of which amount was soon raised.
