Oct. 20, 1808 Written: October 15, 1808 Recorded: October 20, 1808 To DOCTOR CARGIL MASSENBURG of Wake County in the STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA You will take notice that the Grand Jury of Bertie County Court have made a presentment against your Negro man, PETER, and that by virtue of a capias to me directed, attested by the Clerk of the said Court, I now hold the said negro in Custody, and he will receive his trial at the next term of the said Courtm to be held at the Court House in Windsor on the second Monday in November next. This notice is given to you in conformity of an Act of the General Assembly passed at Raleigh, in the year 1794, entitled, "An act to prevent the owners of slaves from hiring to them their own time, to make compensation to Patrols, to restrain the abuses by free negroes and mulattoes."
