Records, NC Archives 010.928.9 4 Feb 2002 by Cathy Hart Farris State of North Carolina Bertie County: To John B. ACREE one of the constables of the said County. These are to request you immediately upon sight hereof to summon Twenty four good and lawful men of the said county to be and appear before me Luke RABY one of the Coroners of the said County at the house of Benton HAYSE in the said County of the 13th day of the present month of August, then and there to inquire of, do and execute all such things as on behalf of the said State shall be lawfull given them in charge touching the death of Edward WIGGINS. And be you then and there to certify that you shall have done in the premises and further to do and execute what in behalf of the said State shall be then and there injoined you. Given under my hand and seal the 13th day of August 1819. Luke RABY Coroner same page...cathy State of North Carolina Bertie County: An inquistion indented taken on the main Road near Wattom Swamp in the said County of Bertie the 13th day of August in the year of our Lord 1819 before Luke RABY one of the Coroners of and in the said County upon the view of the body of Edward WIGGINS a free man of colour then and there lying dead upon the oath of William PUGH, John HODGES, Jesse HODGES, Abraham SMITH, Whitmell H. PUGH, Ira A. CANDS?, Henry LEE, Jack IONES?, Thos. B. RUTTLAND, Thos. MINTON, Benj. MINTON and Britton PILES? good and lawfull men of the county aforesaid who being sworn and charged to inquire on the part of the State aforesaid when and where and how and after what manner the said Edward WIGGINS came to his death upon their oath that the said Edward WIGGINS on the 29th day of August in the year aforesaid in the road near Wattoms Swamp was found dead that he had no marks of violence appearing on his body and died by the visitation of God in a natural way and not otherwise.
