Houlder....land and plantation containing two hundred acres more less lying in Bertie County and upon the north side of Cashie Swamp beginning upon the swamp and running up Poplar Branch to the headline thence along Thos. Holders own line and so along his line to Cashie Swamp, then the various courses of the Swamp to the first station. Wit. Tho. Whitmell, Wm. Cherry, John Hardison. 14 Aug 1753 John Hill, Sheriff of Bertie, to Samuel Wiggins. £16 for 540 acres land sold by John Beverly to Theophilus Pugh on December 11, 1738. On Cashy Swamp at Thomas Roads corner adjoining Henry Roads. Wit: William Moore, Robert Peele (1709), David Dickinson. November Court 1753. (Bertie County, NC Deed Book H, Page 34.) Deed dated Sept. 29, 1758. William Wilson to Thomas Holder. ...a Tract or Parcel of land containing one hundred and sixty acres be the same more or less. Situate in Bertie County on the East side of Cashy Swamp Butted and Bounded as follows: Beginning at the mouth of Poplar Branch thence up the said branch a north course to the head line, thence along the head line to the said William Wilson line, thence along his own line to the first station....Wit. Jno. Hill, Patrick Quinsey(?), Constantine Pierce. Deed dated May 12, 1759. John Spring to Thomas Holder..... One certain Tract of Land containing one hundred acres more or less, situate and lying and being in the County and Province aforesaid on the N. E. side of Cashy Swamp Butted and Bounded as follows: Viz. Beginning at a marked gum in the mouth of Watering Hole Branch, running up the said branch to the head line and along the head line to William Levinors line, along Levinors line to Cashie Swamp, thence to the first station. 7 Dec 1774 Joshua Peelle (1720), planter, of Bertie County, NC by Deed of Gift “for the consideration of the love, good will and affection which I have and do bear unto my son” Josiah Peelle do hereby give 150 acres with all the houses, orchards, gardens, …which I purchased from William Grimes between Cashi Branch & Wattom Marsh, …reserving it for my lifetime. Also to my four daughters Absolutely, Elizabeth, Mary, & Penny Peelle all my livestock & household furniture, & the use reserved to my wife during her life. Wit: Jno. (Bertie County, NC Deed Book M, Page 160.) 14 May 1776 Susanna Burnett of Bertie County, NC by Deed of Gift to grandchild Marmaduke Williams of the same. 100 acres which was part of a deed sold by James Rutland to George Burnett, where I now live on north side of Cashy Swamp also certain personal property. (Bertie County Deed Book M, Deed 249, Page 286.) 1 Nov 1777 Joshua Peelle (1720) of Bertie County, NC by Deed of Gift “for the consideration of the love, good will and affection which I have and do bear towards my beloved grandson” Henry Peelle, son of James Peelle of the same province and county do freely give 60 acres whereon William Rogers now lives which was part of a tract formerly granted to Thomas Willson & by him elapsed & then patented to Peter West on 7 April 1730, joining Grate Swamp branch which falls into Cashy Swamp…Said Joshua Peelle does not give up the land until said Henry comes of age or unless said Joshua should die before that time. James Peelle the father of said Henry acknowledges the same in a declaration of trust. Wit: Joseph Horne, Mary Cartwright. May Court 1778. John Johnston, Clerk of Court. (Bertie County Deed Book M, Page 352.) 29 Mar 1790 Henry Peele of Pitt County to John Mason of Bertie County for £80 sells 60 acres which was part of a grant to Thos Wilson & by him lapsed and then patented to Porter West 2 Apr 1730 & conveyed by deed of gift to Henry Peelle by his grandfather Joseph [Joshua] Peelle on 1 Nov 1777, joining a branch which falls into Cashy Swamp, Joseph Thorn, sd Horn, Norfleet. Wit: Joseph Horn, Sewell Holland. May Court 1790. [Note: the copyist seemed confused whether the name was Joseph Thomas, Joseph Horn, or Joseph Thorn.] (Bertie County Deed Book P, Page 81.) 4 Feb 1793 Thomas Wilson and Joseph Wilson of the State of North Carolina and County of Lenoir sold to Josiah Peelle (1741) of the same state and county of Bertie for and in consideration of the sum of £20 currency 150 acres in Bertie beginning at a red oak standing in Wattom Marsh… to a pine standing in a branch of Cashy Swamp. Wit: Joseph Horne, Thomas Page and Henry Peelle. Bertie County August 1793 Term. (Original in Josiah Peelle Papers, NC State Archives. Bertie County, NC, Deed Book P, Page 428.) 5 May 1796 John Masson and his wife Bathsheba of Bertie County, NC to Josiah Peelle (1741) of the same county for £125 current money of this state … a certain tract of land containing 60 acres lying in Bertie County beginning at a pine standing in a branch which falls into Cashy Swamp, in Joseph Hornes line… Wit: Joseph Horne. (Bertie County, NC, Deed Book R, Page 142.) 20 Oct 1830 Allen Temple and wife Mary B. Temple of the County of Prince George and State of Virginia, sold for four hundred and fifty dollars to Demsey [Dempsey] Peelle of Bertie County and State of North Carolina, a certain tract of land lying in the County of Bertie and State of North Carolina adjoining the lands of James Wilks and containing two hundred acres located on the head of a branch of Cashie called Wattom on the north of Cashie Swamp. [This deed was sent to Prince George County and was signed by John Lloyd, Governor of Virginia on 15 December 1830 in Richmond.] (Bertie County Deed Book CC, Page 610.)
