File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Lorene Rambo hocott@aol.com Transcriber's Note: This area of Chowan became Bertie County in 1722. ========================= William Downing Deeds, Bertie County, NC January 12, 1736 Deeds of Bertie County, Book E, p. 74 William Downing of Mount Pleasant, Precinct of Bertie, for the love, goodwill, and affection for well beloved son William Downing of Boston, in New England, Marriner Deeds to his son one certain tract in Bertie Precinct on the west side of the Chowan River, formerly called Woodwards land, 500 acres Bounded as by a patent formerly granted to John Smith will appear except for 100 acres in the possession of Joseph Newby; Also one other parcel of land in Bertie on the south side of Wiccaceu Creek, 100 acres Bounded by said Creek, on the west John Young's land to the southward by Francis Brown's land and to the eastward by the meanders of a branch called the Reedy Branch. Also one other parcel, or half a tract of light wood land, by estimation 450 acres, the westerly part of the whole tract, in Bertie, near the aforesaid 100 acres. This tract is bounded as by a Deed of Sale from William and Elizabeth Stephens to William Sharp, deed dated July 7, 1714. Also one other tract in Chowan Precinct bounded as by a patent ganted by Gov. Eden, dated Dec. 6, 1720, to the aforesaid William Downing. Proved and registered Feb. 14, 1736. Jan. 12, 1736 Deeds of Bertie County, Book F, p. 78 Son William Downing of Boston to William Downing of Bertie County. Firmly bound in the sum of 1000 pounds current money In exchange for deed of four parcels of land by Deed of Gift. Son and his heirs agree to consent and stand to abide by peaceably the future disposal of all other lands and estate of William Downing in North Carolina to any person in any manner whatsoever. Rec. Feb. Court, 1736 Jan. 12, 1736 Deeds of Bertie County, Book F, p. 76 Begins same as deed above, William Downing to son. Deeds "all my rights, title, interest, property, claim, and demand whatsoever which I have and hold of, in, and unto my estate of inheritance in Newfoundland at St. John's Harbour. Proved and recorded in Feb. Court, 1736. Rec. Feb. Court, 1736 William Downing of Boston to his father In consideration of the deed to his father's estate inheritance in Newfoundland at St. John's Harbour Deeds one full half of the issues, sents, and clear profits of the said estate of inheritance which shall come due in Wm. Sr's natural life. Also he assumed some responsibility on a 50 pound Bill of Exchange his father had drawn on John Masters of Bristol-- meaning not clear. March 4, 1739 Deeds of Bertie County, Book F, p. 201 William Downing of Mount Pleasant in Bertie County for 1400 pounds current money of Province paid by John Wynns of Bertie County sells land in Bertie County--Mount Pleasant on the Southwest side of Chowan, 550 acres Bounded: beg. at the mouth of the Wildcat Gatt or Run below the plantation thence running up the said Gatt and its various meanders to a Hickory thence 70 degrees to a pine in Pollocks line then north sixty poles to a pine Sharp's corner then along Sharp's line north and east 240 poles to another post Sharp's Corner then with 30 degrees west . . poles to a white oak between the head of Goosse Creek and Wiccacon Creek then along a line of marked trees to the nearest . . . of Wiccacon Creek thence from a Cypruss down Wiccacon Creek's vary. courses to its mouth thence down Chowan River to the first station.
