Bertie COUNTY NC Deeds Thomas Meirs et ux to William Ruffin - 1779 File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Virginia Crilley varcsix@hot.rr.com http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/bertie.htm Deed Book M pg 412 Meirs et ux to William Ruffin This indenture made the twenty third day of February one thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy-nine [1779] between Thomas MIERS and Elizabeth Miers, his wife of the bounty of Bertie of the state of North Carolina of the one part and William RUFFIN of the county of Northampton of the state aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that for an in consideration of the sum of three thousand pounds of current money of this state to the said Thomas Miers in hand paid at or before the sealing and delivering of these presents by the said William Ruffin the receipt whereof the said Thomas Miers and Elizabeth his wife doth hereby acknowledge and therefor doth release, acquit and discharge the said William Ruffin his heirs, Executors and Administrators by these presents they the said Thomas Mires and Elizabeth his wife hath granted, bargained, sold aliened and confirmed and by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell, alien and confirm unto the said William Ruffin his heirs and assigns a certain tract of parcel of land lying and being in the county of Bertie and State of North Carolina. Beginning at a black gum in Rocquist running thence N80 E 128 poles to a forked Sweet Gum [*deed from Wm Ruffin to son, John has N80 E 183 pole] Thence N10 W 60 poles to a black gum Thence N 50 E68 to a Sweet gum on a branch near a willow oak formerly Abram Shepherds Beginning thence up the said Branch that divides betwixt said Miers and Thomas Veals to the head thereof and so along a line of marked trees to the head line to a pine in s'd head line so up said line to hickory Thence no 60 W222 pole to three hickorys Thence South 20 W 118 pole to three pines on a branch that makes into Rookist [Rocquist] Swamp Thence the windings of said branch and swamp to the first station containing by estimation Five hundred acres of land more or less. Reference being had to the several respecting grants and conveyances thereof may more fully and largely appear, and all house buildings orchards ways waters water course commodities hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever to the said premises hereby granted or any part thereof belonging or anyway appertaining and the Reversion and Reversions Remainder and Remainders, Rents Issues and profits thereof and also all the Estate, right, title interest, use Trust property claim and demand whatsoever of them the said Thomas Miers and Elizabeth his {wife] of, in and to the said premises and all deeds evidences a writings touching or in anywise concerning the same. To have and to hold the lands hereby conveyed and all and singular other the premises hereby bargained and sold and every part and parcel thereof with there and every of there appurtenances unto the said William Ruffin his heirs and assigns forever and the said Thomas Miers and Elizabeth his wife for themselves their heirs Executors and Administrators doth covenant promise and grant to and with the said William Ruffin, his heirs and assigns by these presents the said Thomas Miers and Elizabeth his wife now at the sealing and delivering of these presents are sized of a good, sure, perfect and indictable estate of inheritance in fee simple of and in the premises hereby bargained sold and that they have good power and lawful and absolute authority to grant and convey the same unto the said William Ruffin in manner and form aforesaid and that the said premises now are and so forever hereafter shall remain and be free and clear of and from all former gifts grants bargains, sales, dowery right and title of dower judgements, Executions titles troubles charges and incumbrances whatsoever (Except a lease given unto Sarah Powell for fifty acres of land whereon she now lives during the term thereof known and bounded by a blazed mark made done committed or suffered by the said Thomas Miers and Eliza his wife for any other person or person whatsoever and that the said Thomas Miers and Elizabeth his wife for themselves and their heirs all and singular hereby bargained and sold with the appurtenances unto the said William his heirs and assigns against them the said Thomas Miers and Elizabeth his wife and their heirs and all and every other person and persons whatsoever shall warrant and forever defend by these presents. In witness whereof the said Thomas Miers and Elizabeth his wife hath hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year above written.
