Ruffin Know all men by these presents that we Wright Mitchell and wife, Martha Ann of the state of North Carolina and County of Bertie for and in consideration of the sum of $275 two hundred and seventy five dollars to us in hand paid by Whitmill (Whitmel) Ruffin, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have this day bargained, sold and by these presents do bargain and sell unto the said Whitmill Rufin his heirs, Executrors, Administrators and assigns forever a certain piece or parcel of land lying and being situated in the State and County aforesaid, butted and bounded as follows viz By the lands of Issac P. Freeman, Aquilla Oxley, Dam Branch and Quiacquson (Quiocasin) Swamp it being the tract of land which fell to MARTHA ANN in the division of the lands of her father, JOSHUA OUTLAW Dec was will appear by reference to the division between the heirs of said Joshua Outlaw containing two hundred and fifty (250) acres be the same more or less. To have and to hold the above bargained premises with all the improvements and appurtenances thereto belonging an in any wise appertaining unto Whitmill Ruffin heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever. And we the said Wright Mitchell and wife Martha Ann do warrant, secure and forever defend the title of all and every part of said premises to be free and clear from the lawful claim or claims of all and every person whatever unto him the said Whitmill Ruffin heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever. And we the said Wright Mitchell and wife, Martha Ann do for ourselves, our Executors Administrators and assigns do covenant and agree to and with the said Whitmill Ruffin his heirs and executors and administrators and assigns that we are seized and possessed of a good and sufficient title in fee simple of the above bargained premises and that we have full and sufficient authority to convey the same and we do hereby warrant and defend the same to the said Whitmill Ruffin his heirs forever. Askew H.B. Williford L. Jenkins took her (Martha's) private examination February Session 1841 The examination of the above deed from Wright Mitchell and Martha Ann Mitchell, his wife, to Whitmel B. Ruffin was proved in open court by the oath of H.B. Williford one of the subscribing witnesses thence afterwards the said Martha being privily examined in view of the court by Lodowick Jenkins a member of said County Court appointed by the Court for that purpose, separate and apart from her husband the said Wright, touching her execution thereof sayeth that she doth voluntarily assent thereto without any fear of or compulsion of her said husband.
