Lords Proprietor Land Grant to John Cotton; 3 January 1728

His Excell’y John Lord Carteret palatin  etc. do hereby give and grant unto 
John Cotton of our Said County a Tract of Land containing 521 Acres lying on 
the North Side of Morattock River in Bertie Precinct which was formerly 
patented for John Nelson and now resurveyed for Cotton beginning at a Cypress 
in Ochanecke Swamp James Anderson’s Corner then So. 73 Wst. 580 pole to a 
Maple Standing in the Ochanecke Swamp and down to the first Station being due 
etc.  

To have and to Hold etc. Yielding and paying etc. the fee Rent of one Shilling 
for every fifty Acres etc. given etc. Janu’ry 3rd 1728.

Witness R Everard etc.


John “Bertie” Cotton’s will was probated May 1728.  This could also be his son 
John who died in 1741.
