Quiocasin Swamp S of Powellsville flows into Stoney Creek(variant spellings: Qutocquison; Qutoccoson; Quiocosson. This is a pretty wide area but maybe we can find some more clues to pin point it. It seems to be on both sides of Highway 13..... 1) 1804 --- Does any SPIVEY researcher have someone in that general vicinity? My guess is that Spivey must have had a dam --- and perhaps across the Quiocasin Branch? Mill Creek would also help to pin point it. Perhaps Spivey also had a Mill at the Dam??? I'm just guessing. Wit: George Barlow, Thomas Ward Samuel Luten purchased land from James Ward in May 1804 Bertie Co. - "beginning at the main run Quiocasin Swamp.........Spivey Dam branch called the Mile Creek". I understand where the Quiocasin Swamp is, but where is "Spivey Dam and Mile Creek"? My deed book only runs to 1757....but my guess is that James Ward then sold this same land to your Luten. Did your deed give the acreage? H163 Edward Howcot (Howcutt) to George Barlow, Merchant *since George Barlow was a witness to the Ward deed, I thought this might be connected. The map showing the division shows Long Branch on the SE line, Quioccosin Swamp on the SW Line, Loosing Swamp on the NW side line and the Great Branch across the top. The road from Powellsville to Center Grove cuts through the north section at the new Bridge. The new bridge is about one mile from Powellsville on this road. This map is recorded in Bertie Deed book AA pg 202 dated 4 July 1821. It also shows an Askew on the NE Corner. From other deeds I believe the Hollomons lived on the NW side of this land and the Outlaws on the West SW side of this land. The 1863 Confederate map shows R.A. Wynns living on this same land. Jim
