T. Veale Mortgage Bertie County, NC Deed Book RR, Pages 377 – 378 State of North Carolina Bertie County This Indenture made this the 20th day of December A. D. 1877 between Buck Ruffin and Rose Ruffin his wife of the County of Bertie and State of North Carolina of the first part and J. T. Veale of the County and State aforesaid, of the second part. Witnesseth, that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of ten dollars in hand paid by said party of the second part the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have given granted bargained sold conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do give grant bargain sell convey and confirm unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever all the following described piece or parcel of land lying and being in the said County of Bertie adjoining the lands of Bryant Lee Wm Chappell and others. To have and to hold the same together with all the hereditaments, and appurtenances thereunto in any wise appertaining, and the said Buck Ruffin and his wife Rose Ruffin parties of the first part do covenant with the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns as follows First That they are the owners lawfully seized of said premises Second That they have a right to convey the same. Third That the same is free from all incumbrance whatever, and Fourth That the said party of the second part his heirs, and assigns shall quietly enjoy, and possess the same, and that they will warrant, and defend the title to the same against all lawful claims. Provided nevertheless that if the said Buck Ruffin or his wife Rose Ruffin parties of the first part their heirs executors, and administrators shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid to the said J. T. Veale party of the second part his heirs executors, administrators, or assigns the sum of fifty three dollars according to the condition, of a certain bond payable on the 1st day of November 1878 bearing even date herewith, then this deed to be null and void otherwise to be in full force and effect. In testimony whereof the said parties of the first part have hereunto set their hand and seals the day and year first above written. Cherry Justice of the Peace of Bertie County, Rose wife of Buck Ruffin and acknowledged the due execution of the foregoing mortgage and the said Rose being by me privately examined separate and apart from her said husband touching her voluntary execution of the same doth state that she signed the same freely and voluntarily without fear or compulsion of her said husband or any other person, and that she doth still voluntarily assent thereto. State of North Carolina} Bertie County} December 31st 1877 The execution of this mortgage was this day duly proved before me by the oath of J. H. Britt, one of the subscribing Witnesses thereto, and Rose Ruffin wife of Buck Ruffin having been privately examined by W. J. Cherry, a Justice of the Peace. Reese (Walter of Snakebite Township who at the time of the 1880 federal census, had Hariett A. Veale, age 69 in his household). Mr. Reese was a white man as was Wm. Chappell (age 81) of Snakebite Township. J. T. Veale (white) was in the 1880 census for Woodville Township, was single and age 33. Bryant Lee, black, was 65 in 1880, lived in Snakebite Township. John H. Britt, was 37 in 1880 and lived in the Woodville Township.
