This Indenture made this Seventeenth day of January in the
year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and forty
between John Ruffin of the County of Bertie and State of
North Carolina of the one part and Richard J. Veale of the
Same State and County aforesaid of the other part witnesseth
that the Said John Ruffin for and in consideration of the
Sum of one hundred and fifty dollars in hand paid to the
Said John Ruffin by the Said Richard J. Veale the receipt
whereof the Said John Ruffin doth hereby acknowledge hath
bargained and Sold and by these presents doth bargain Sell
alleen enfeoff and confirm unto the Said Richard J. Veale a
certain piece parcel or tract of Land Situate lying and
being in the County and State aforesaid adjoining the lands
of Agness Veale Richard J. Veale Jesse Cotton and others
containing by estimation forty three Acrees be it the same
more or less it being all the Lands Martha J. H. Dukes or
Henry Dukes her father owned or possessed in Bertie County
to have hold and enjoy the aforesaid granted and bargained
premises to the only use of him the Said Richard J. Veale
his heirs and assigns forever together with all the rite
title and interest which the Said John Ruffin have or claim
to the aforesaid granted and bargained premises and he the
Said John Ruffin for himself his heirs and assigns doth
covenant to and with the Said Richard J. Veale to warrant
defend and forever secure the above premises to the only use
and behoof of him the Said Richard J. Veale his heirs and
assigns against the lawful claim or claims of any person or
persons whatsoever in witness whereof I the Said John Ruffin
have hereunto set my hand and Seal the day and year above
written
