Ruffin and his wife Mary E. Ruffin, and Frank Askew, of Bertie County, State of North Carolina, of the first part and Edward P. Simons, W.B. Claeton, W.H. Tayloe, J.J. Perry, Joseph Leary, William Miers, of Bertie County N.C. D.V. Sessoms J.L. Jenkins, & J.J. Scull of Hertford County N.C. Trustees in trust, for purposes hereinafter mentioned, of the Second part - Witnesseth That the said Joseph B Ruffin and his wife Mary E Ruffin and Frank Askew parties of the first part, for and in consideration of the sum of Ten Dollars to them in hand paid by the parties of the second part, the receipt whereof, is hereby acknowledged, hath bargained and sold, and by these presents doth sell, release confirm and convey unto them the said E.P. Simons, W.B. Claeton, W.H. Tayloe, J.J. Perry, J. Leary, Wm. Miers, D.V. Sessom! s, J.L. Jenkins & J.J. Scull Trustees parties of the second part a certain tract of land lying and being in Bertie County near Powellsville, on the publick road from Powellsville to Pitch Landing and bounded as follows, Beginning at John Brittons comer on North side of said Road, near a small red oak, thence along said Brittons line, a Northerdly course, 70 yards to pine, thence Easterdly 90 yards to corner post, thence Southerdly 70 yards to post on Pitch landing road, thence Westwardly along said road 90 yards to first station, containing one and two sevenths Acres more or less together with all the appertainances thereunto belonging or in any way appertaining. To have and to hold same, as trustees for the use and benefit of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. This is to say the said trustees shall erect or cause to be erected on said land, a house of Religious worship, in which, at all times, such ministers and preachers as shall from time to time be dul! y authorized to preach the Gospel and administer the Sacraments of the church, shall have the privalage to officiate, according to the rules and regulations of said Methodist Episcopal church South as may be adopted or enacted by the General and Annual conferences, of said church. And the said Joseph B Ruffin, Mary E Ruffin & Frank Askew, of the first part, do covenant with the said E.P. Simons, W.B. Claiton, W.H. Tayloe, J.J. Perry, J. Leary, W. Miers, D.V. Sessoms J.L. Jenkins, & J.J. Scull, Trustees, and their successors in office, appointed according to the Discipline and regulations of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, first that they are the lawful owners of said premises, Second That they have good right to convey the same, Third that the same is free from all incumbrances whatever, and Fourth that said parties of second part, Trustees and their successors in office, shall quietly enjoy and possess the same, against all other claims by whomsoever ma! de. And the said Joseph B Ruffin, Mary E Ruffin & Frank Askew do moreover, for themselves their heirs and assigns covenant to warrant and defend the right and title in fee, to said Land unto the said parties of second part as trustees, and their successors in office forever, against the claims, of any and all persons whomsoever. In Witness Whereof of the said Joseph B Ruffin and his wife Mary E Ruffin, and Frank Askew hereunto subscribe their name and affix their seals, the day and date above written. Be it Remembered that on this 20th of Sept 1880, before the undersigned Justice of the Peace for said County, personally appeared Joseph B Ruffin and Mary E Ruffin his wife the parties described in, and who signed the foregoing deed, and acknowledged the due execution thereof by them as their act and deed, and thereupon the said Mary E Ruffin being by the undersigned privately examined separate and apart from her said husband, touching her free consent in the execution thereof, doth declare, on such her examination, that she has executed the same freely, of her own free will and accord, and without any force fear or undo influence of her said husband or any other person, and did still voluntarily assent thereto J.W. Mitchell, J.P. State of North Carolina Inferior Court Bertie County Oct 5th 1880 The foregoing deed having been properly acknowledged as is shown by the certificate of J.W. Mitchell an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Bertie, it is adjudged to be correct and is therefore ordered to be registered, together with this certificate.
