Wbitmell B. Ruffin to Howell M. Jones
Know all men by these present tht I Whitmel B. Ruffin of
the county of Bertie and State of North Carolina for and
in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred and forty
dollars ($240) to me in hand paid the receipt whereof I
do hereby acknowledge have grated bargained, sold and
conveyed and by these present do grant bargain sell and
convey unto Howell M. Jones of the county and state
aforesaid one certain piece tract or parcel of land lying
and being in the county and state aforesaid containing by
estimation one hundred and eighty five acres be the same
more or less butted and bounded as follows

Beginning in the run of Barbecue Swamp at the old road
William Perry's line 

Thence up the said road to a branch formerly Charles
Freeman's line

Thence along side Freeman's line to David Watford's line

Thence along said Watfords line to the rune of Barbecue
Swamp

Thence down the run of said swamp to the first station

To have and to hold the above bargained premises with all
the improvements thereunto belonging or in anywise
appertaining thereunto unto him the said Howell M. Jones
his heirs and assigns forever and I the said Whitmel B.
Ruffin do for myself my heirs executors, administrators
and assigns do warrant and forever defend the right and
title free from the lawful claim or claims of any other
person or persons whatsoever unto him the said Howell M.
Jones his heirs and assigns forever; in as full and ample
a manner as the most learned of the law can devise.

In Testimony whereof I the said Whitmel B. Ruffin have
hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this the
seventh day of August in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and forty one.

State of North Carolina, Bertie County Court   Febr Term 1843
This deed from Whit B. Ruffin to Howell M. Jones was
proved in open court by the oath of West Mizell, one of
the subscribing witnesses thereof and ordered to be
registered.
