SMALLWOOD to THOMAS RUFFIN This indenture made and entered into on the eleventh day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight (Dec 11, 1838) between Jno. S. SMALLWOOD of the County of Bertie of teh first part and Thomas RUFFIN of the same county of the second part, witnesseth that the said John S. Smallwood for an in consideration of the sum of Three hundred and seventy five dollars ($375) to him in hand paid before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, hath bargained, sold, aliend and conveyed and by these present doth herby bargain, sell, alien and convey unto Thomas Ruffin a certain tract of land lying in the INDIAN WOODS in Bertie County which tract of land was sold at Sheriff's Sale as the property of Willis FRYER. Butted and bounded as follows: Commencing at a Gum in Town Swamp, King's Corner, thence North 56 1/2 east 166 poles North 82 east 88 poles to a Hickory in Thomas Ruffin's line thence North 38 East 78 poles to a white oadk thence South 81 East 156 poles to a white oadk stump to the Road called "Anthony and Godwin's Road" then to White Oak in Horten's Green Pond then South 11 1/2 West __ pole to a small hickory thence South 47 1/2 West 165 pole to a Post Oak on the Indian Woods Road thence North __ west 18 pole and South 4 East 77 pole thence to the first station Containing Eight Hundred acres (800) more or less adjoining the lands of Thomas RUFFIN, Reuben CARNAL, Green's Pond and Wm R. WILLIAMS and others And I the said, John S. Smallwood do by these presents bargain and convey and make over unto the said Thomas RUFFIN all the right, title and interest of which Willis FYER did _____ and possessed in and to said tract of land, and also all the rights, titles and interest vested in me as purchaser of the same at Sheriff's sale. To have and to hold the same with all the improvements and appurtances there unto belonging to him the said, Thoma Ruffin, his heirs and assigns forever. Smith Febry Term 1830 This deed from Jno S. Smallwood to Thomas Ruffin was proven in open court by the oath of Lewis Thompson one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be registered.
