P. Smallwood fo the State of North Carolina and County of Bertie of the first part and Joseph B. Ruffin of the same state and county of the second part witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath bargained, sold, conveyed and confirmed and by those present do bargain,s ell, convey and cinfirm unto the said Joseph B. Ruffin a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in said county and State containing by estimation three hundred and twenty acres more or less and known as the Joshua Outlaw land bounded as follows by the lands of Isaac P. Freeman, Silas Hobbs, and William J. Pritchard. To have and to hold the above bounded premises with all ways, woods, waters and every other appurtenance thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining unto him the said Joseph B. Ruffin his heirs and assigns forever in fee simple. And I, the said Thos J.P. Smallwood for myself, my heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns do warrant and defend the right and title of said land unto him the said Joseph B. Ruffin his heirs and assigns forever fee and clear of all lawful claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 1st day of January A.D. 1857 Thos J P Smallwood Signed, sealed and delivered in presence fo Robt R. Tayloe Bertie Co Court - May Term 1860 This deed from Thos JP Smallwood to Joseph B. Ruffin was proved in open court by the oath of R.R.
