This indenture made the twenty second day of October
in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred
and ninety eight between JOSHUA WARD of the county
of Bertie and state of North Carolina on the one
part and SAMUEL LUTEN of the other part in the
county and state aforesaid witnessed that the said
JOSHUA WARD for and in consideration of the sum of
one hundred and seventy eight pounds ten shillings
to me in hand paid by the said SAMUEL LUTEN, have
given granted bargained and sold to the said SAMUEL
LUTEN, one piece, parcel, part of land, situated
lying and being in said county of Bertie lying on
the south side of Spivey Dam Branch, butted and
bounded as follows: Beginning at a white oak
standing in the main run of the Mill Branch...at the
mouth of Little Dear bell(?) Branch and thence up
the said Deer bell (?) Branch along a line of marked
trees to JERIMIAH FREEMAN’S line and thence along
said JEREMIAH FREEMAN’S...to his corner in CHARLES
FREEMAN’S line and thence along CHARLES FREEMAN’S
line to a Post Oak.  THOMAS WARD... corner and
thence along the same pattern line to JAMES WARDS
corner standing in said line and then along same
JAMES WARD line to a Black Jack. standing in said
line and thence along said JAMES WARD’S line to a
Black Jack...JAMES WARD, ISAAC HILL WARD, DAVID
ASKEW and JOSHUA WARD’S corner near the long...and
thence along a line of marked trees to the head of
Spivey’s Dam Branch to the center of two sweetgums a
pine and water oak and thence down the main run of
said Spivey Dam Branch to the first station
containing by estimation one hundred and fifty acres
by the same more or less.  To have and to hold the
said land with all rites and privileges appertaining
there to belonging on any...appertaining thereunto
unto the said SAMUEL LUTEN his heirs, and assigns
forever in a free and simple manner forever in as
full and ample...

The within deed from JOSHUA and SILVIA WARD to SAMUEL LUTEN was proven in open court by the oath of ISAAC HILL WARD one of the subscribing witnesses and ordered to be registered.
