Records, Grist Mills 010.928.9 NCArchives. By Cathy Hart Farris 4 Feb. 2002 Bertie County: Present His Majesty's Justices On reading the Petition of Aaron ELLIS for two acres of land to be laid off for building a Grist Mill in Bertie County on FLAGGY RUN and it appearing to this Court that the land is the property of David MEADE Esq. IT IS Ordered that said Aaron ELLIS of the application of the said Aaron ELLIS and that Aaron ELLIS not intitled by the Act of Assembly to have his said Petition Granted of the said Mr. MEADE will erect a mill there himself. under the above... Nansemond July 27, 1751 I have consented that Aaron ELLIS may build a Grist Mill on the place set forth in his petition. Signed David MEADE ============= David MEADE lived in Nansemond. I have found him in a few records of the Parish. I believe Aaron ELLIS knew David MEADE. I believe Aaron ELLIS was somehow involved within the set up of Society Parish in Bertie, but I have not found any records to support this, except in the estate sale of Aaron ELLIS, money was paid to Lemuel REDDICK who was a Warden in Nansemond and collected money from people to take care of the poor within the Parish...sort of like the bonds in the Bastardy Bonds. John MORRIS was the father of Chappel Hill in Society Parish and at one time Aaron ELLIS gave the MORRIS name land right next door to his own land ============== John wrote: Cathy, I have a number of ancestors on the list and I have a copy of the same petition. My best guess was that it was ca. 1800. On another look at the document, I agree that it was earlier than 1800. Lamb Hardy signed it, and he died in 1761. John Cake signed it and he died late 1770 or early 1771. If the William Cowen (Cowand) is William, I , then he died ca 1780. By the way, many of the names were signed by one person--look at the handwriting of the signatures. William Cowen was actually William Cowand, my ancestor. What had me a little confused was that there was a William Cowand,Jr., and a John Cake, Jr. and I didn't know which ones I was dealing with. I would not put it any earlier than 1750. =========== If this is the Wm McGlauhon I am thinking it is he was born. 1740 and died 1 March 1826 in Bertie Co., NC. If this is the correct David Gaskins b. bet 1740-1745 in NC and he died 5 May 1806 in Windsor, Bertie Co., NC. I have a Lemuel Lamb Hardy b. 1711 d. aft 1797 (married to Elizabeth Parrott) they had a son Lamb Hardy which I have no dates on. H. Hardy (if this is Humphrey Hardy) b. 1740 Bertie Co., NC., d. 16 July 1819 in Putnam Co., Ga (married to Mourning Howell McGlaughon). ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
