All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Suzan Speropoulos http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/bertie.htm I have recently obtained an original letter dated April 5, 1893 written from R.W. Askew to his unnamed sister. R.W. Askew was one of the superintendents of Bertie County schools and the letter is written on the Office of Board of Education letterhead. Some of the writing is hard to read. The letter is in not to bad a shape, seams are torn a bit and there are water stains. Anyone interesting in a copy, let me know and I will scan it in and send it to you. Letter reads as follows: My Dear Sister, Enclosed you will find your deed signed and witnessed by all the Barnes heirs, which forever settles any dispute or claims which any of the heirs of Mr. Barnes can ever put up?. You may rest perfectly at ease about it for all times to come and not allow any disturbing riffle to pass in your mind. As for the signing on Sunday that will amt. to nothing as the oath of witness oath will settle all that. There is no date about the paper to prove the signing was done on Sunday. You will find that the amt. settled by me as per this deed is $175.00 but as I wrote you I had to pay Bill Barnes $25.00 extra to get him to aprove? to effect the compromise. He said he had been to considerable expense besides some lawyers fees and would not consent to settlement without it and both our lawyers advised me to settle it by that compromise as that **** way. This deed is now ready to had to the Clerk of Hertford for registration. The certificate of Mr. Lyon our clerk is all the evidence needed, as he has sworn the witness sufficiently. You can send this ref. to Winton? just as it is at any time. Father let me have the balance of the money which you will owe him instead of me. I think that compromise has had a tendency to hurey up old man Drake. So if he finds out that you have already settled the matter tell him you had to borrow the money and want it from him to pay back. The amt. gotten from father is $144.50. Lizzie and myself want to come up soon as we can, possibly about last this month. This leaves us all to usual health. Love to all Your bro, R.W. Askew
