Bertie COUNTY NC History - W.N. Nichols Saw Mill Log File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/bertie/history/sawmill.txt W. M. NICHOLS, Manufacturer Of Round and Sawed Lumber, And Dealer in BUILDERS MATERIAL OF ALL KIND, And Contractor for Wood Work. Houses Built on Lots and Sold on Easy Payments to all who don’t care to pay all Cash. Aulander, N. C. ____________190__ (Excerpt from William Mack Nichols’ business letterhead that included logo’s of lumber and building materials on the top left and right corners of each sheet.) Wm. M. Nichols’ business cards were plain unbleached white paper with a picture of a single green tree in full foliage on the left side of the card and the words, “Plant Trees” written along the bottom of each card. The following information is extracted from W.M. Nichols’ “Workmen’s Monthly Time Book” regarding his Saw Mill employee’s payroll records. This book is a small brown paper ledger with a cloth binding. It has a table of wages printed for one or two weeks on the inside of the front cover covering salaries of under a penny up to $30.00 of pay for a two week period. The back cover has salary increments from 16 cents to $60.00 covering one, two, three, and four week work periods. The records in this ledger begin with the July 1907 payroll. Employee time is marked off per day for a month period. The employee’s of this company were paid in cash weekly. To expedite the transcription of these payroll records I am just showing total days worked per month & the salary paid. Also want to make a point on mentioning that these records are very old, handwritten, and with quite a bit of creative spelling to boot. I have tried to read it accurately, and transcribe as it is written. Hope you will find the following enjoyable!
