MERRY HILL HISTORIC HOMES AVOCA PLANTATION Located in Merry Hill, the old Avoca Plantation was owned by the Capehart family for many years. Dr. W. R. Capehart is buried there in the family cemetery. He was the Assistant Surgeon General in the Civil War (Confederate). There are many old pecan tree's that were planted in 1800's that are still there. These Capehart's owned in 1860 ca. 8600 acres of land by the old methods and in 1860 had ca. 200 slaves for all the cotton they had . They also had a large Avoca Fishery there. The old church on Avoca Plantation was Methodist or Episcopalian. The Capeharts Baptist Church, was organized in 1824, initially as Capehart's Meeting House. The land was donated by a Capehart and the Capehart family attended Church there for years at the beginning. There was also a Capehart's School House there at one time.
